  • U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt awards George M. Cohan with the Congressional Medal of Honor, as he accepts it. And I love the part in which the troops sang his song “Over There”. He joins along with everyone else in the march. The most famous song that America had ever had since the First World War. Thanks to George M. Cohan.

The tap dance on the stairs was done ad-lib by Cagney. This movie still inspires me.

I read that after he did that, the director asked him, " are you nuts? You could have broken your neck!" To which Cagney replied, "Sorry, I don't do stunt work."

Remember watching this movie with my Dad back in the day - on several occasions! I returned the favor and turned my daughter on to as well. I'll turn 62 this year and if this happens to be on TV, it's a remote drop for me!! 🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸

Our country needs songs like that now; so the American spirit can come alive again. ❤

Those songs still exist and are very popular. They have as much meaning now, as they did back then! You need to just start singing! Appreciate all that's been given to us by our country's ancestors. It also reminds us what we stand to lose if we don't continue to fight for liberty and justice for all!

This clip and entire movie is the true spirit of the United States, it is from a simpler time where America was celebrated by most of its citizens and proudly acknowledged. Today we are a ghost of a country compared to what this movie portrayed. Cohan and the Americans of WWI and WWII would be embarrassed with what we have become. I have tears in my eyes watching this and I truly hope America one day will return to this old time spirit. However I feel this won't ever be possible again the more time goes on........

Speaking as an Englishman, I agree with every word. The pride and patriotism shown in these wonderful films is leaking away to be replaced by laziness and cynicism. It's the same over here in the UK.

This movie came out during World War 2, and the song is from World War 1. America was reluctant to enter the Second World War because of what World War 1 was. It was the Great War. The War to End All Wars. But it didn’t. The America First crowd with Charles Lindbergh was trying to keep America isolationist. But after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, the illusion of isolationism seemingly disappeared. Even Lindbergh who had praised the Nazis was ready to fight for America.
So understand, America seems more divided than ever. It isn’t. And when that side of America shows up, it will be just as patriotic as it was then.
