I just got my instant pot 3 days ago. I've used it 3 times and I'm obsessed. I've also been absolutely addicted to your videos for 3 days. Thank you!!!!!
Loved this video and am having a head slap moment over the tips about freezing whole chickens! Why have I not thought of that? Thank you SO much! Unfortunately, I just put 2 whole chickens in the freezer yesterday! What a great idea. AND I have been searching for how to pressure cook the whole chicken when frozen. This video was perfect for me. Thanks!!!
Never thought about slicing and freezing lemons. What a great idea, I have a Meyer lemon tree and never can use them up before some of them go to waste. Gonna have to use that trick!!!
Just got an Instant Pot and I'm feeling clueless! Annnnd I'm always forgetting to defrost the chicken for my slow cooker, so this is awesome for me! Great instructional video! Thanks for zooming in and showing what buttons you're pressing and explaining the beeping and how the machine works.
Nice work! I like the added broiler step at the end. Crisping up the skin makes a huge difference in both appearance and taste. I would strain that broth, skim off most of the fat and put it in a deep saute pan to make a sauce for the chicken. I'd probably add tarragon, white wine and thicken it slightly with a corn starch slurry then whisk in a few pats of cold butter right at the end. Serve the sauce on the side for an upscale touch with little effort.
Looks really simple, thanks! One tip that might be useful during broiling-- cut the bottom of the chicken and flatten it out on the sheet. Then you could get even crisping with no flips. I believe this process is called "spatchcocking" when it's done prior to cooking. Search on that term for tips on best way to do it.
I love using the instant pot for frozen chicken. I love making it similarly, less touching, cleaning, and thawing_ just dump it in and sprinkle on the spices. Great video on spreading the ease of cooking.

YES!!! I've been wondering about how to cook a frozen chicken. Thank you so much for this video, Nili. I can now prepare some for the freezer and have chicken when ever we want.
@+Indigo Nili : Do you answer all or most of the questions that people have when they post them here or do you have a blog,Facebook page, etc.,too?? I just got an Instant Pot,I have no idea what I'm doing with it,yet (lol) and I really like your videos because you explain everything so clearly,nicely,etc.. Such helpful videos. I got it IP for Christmas and didn't use it for a few months because I was afraid of it--but now I have made a couple of stews that have been fabulous--but not sure what else to do beyond stews so this is helpful. Thank you!
Great Video. I didnt think you could cook this fast from frozen so i bought the frozen chicken. Then i realized I dont have a Instant pot!! I have a . . .(whispering) " Pressure king pro". But it worked out ok too! Thanks for showing.
When I saw the size of your chicken in the pot, I though you were in trouble. lol If you have a big cut of meat, a trick to make sure it fits is to put it in the liner in your freezer until it's formed. Then it's good to go. My freezer's pretty full (and IP used alot), so I bought a plastic container the sane size as the liner and use that. Thanks for sharing your video!
I finally ordered an Instapot(my late Christmas present from hubby). I am so excited to try it. I already do monthly freezer meals since our schedule is crazy busy. I love the idea of putting a frozen meal in the IP and not having to defrost first.
Hi Nili, love your videos! And just an idea, I have watched your videos and have noticed that you use the combo of salt, pepper, granulated onion and garlic, have you considered mixing these together at a ratio of your liking and then keep in a tight sealing container. And then you can add the other spices and herbs. Thought this might save you some time!
Wow , that’s crazy, my wife got an instant pot for Xmas & the first thing I did was subscribe to your channel. I love the things you post I’ve learned a lot already from watching! Thanks!! It’s amazing what you can do with one .Going to try the frozen chicken, thanks again & keep making great videos! Jim ps I love cooking also I’m the one that got the instant pot for her/ me lol
Great video. I have cooked blocks of boneless/skinless thighs and breasts from frozen in the instant pot and they were wonderful. Nice to know I can do whole chickens as well.
@@jbob1548 individual frozen chicken breasts take 25 minutes. If it was a block of thighs, legs, or breasts maybe 35 minutes and for the whole chicken I cook them for one hour. I do them all on high pressure meat setting. You need to add 1 cup of liquid (water/stock) and any seasoning you like. Don’t count ketchup/Barbecue sauce or something like that as your only liquid because it will burn and cause you IP to turn off. If you live at a high altitude I would add a little bit longer to my cooking time.
Haven't watched past the first minute yet! I was trying to figure out how you were going to get the packaging off of the chicken. I wanted that secret tip, because I have tried and it's just about impossible! Good idea to put it in a different bag. ;-)
Even if you froze the chicken in it's original bag, all you'd have to do to get the bag off the frozen chicken is submerge the chicken in it's bag is a large pot of almost hot water. It'll defrost the chicken and bag just enough to loosen the bag from the chicken and get it off when you open it.
I've had my InstantPot for about 3 years now but I've only used it a few times. Always have trouble figuring out how to set it. Every video/you tube thing that I watch never has exactly the same one I have so the buttons are different. I notice you used the MANUAL button and I don't have that. I have a 12 lb,. frozen chicken that fit in mine and I did all spices, etc. Since my chicken's so big and according to your math, I think I set it for 2 hours on pressure cook. (10 mins per pound, 12 pounds=120 mins) I'm hoping I don't have an explosion or burnt chicken on my hands!!! Thanks for your simple video!
I would try spatchcocking the chicken before putting it under the broiler. That way it would lay more evenly and you wouldn't have to flip it. I'd also throw in a roughly chopped carrot, celery stalk, and an onion.
Always add lemon at the end. If lemon is present during cook time on the stove in a Crock-Pot in the oven or in a pressure cooker it's going to cook bitter. Zest is okay but use the juicy slices at the end and it will be a much better result.
looks great! i absolutely LOVE the instant pot. haven't done a whole chicken yet, but i cook frozen breasts and thighs often. i also use the broth for my soups. it's awesome.
Great video! Thank you. I just bought my pot yesterday and this is exactly the type of thing I want to use it for. Also, thanks for the broiling tip at the end!
I do pretty much what you do with prepping and freezing the chicken and pretty much cook it the same way but I'm not using a Instant Pot but a on the stove pressure cooker. These frozen chickens are my emergency company for dinner plan. This happens when groups of hungry boys and men drop in at the end of the pay period and are too broke for McDonalds:) I figure 1 chicken for every 2 guys. Fortunately I have enough pressure cookers for 8 guys or 4 chickens LOL I make spaetzle it's so easy and fast.
Good video. I've had my 6 qt for almost a year and have been meaning to ask a question about natural release. If you plan to use a natural release, do you have the "keep warm" button off? I've noticed that it can take a very long time for the pressure to drop if the keep warm light is on. No one has made mention of it in any of the videos I've watched.
Didn't know it could be done!!! Thankyou for a NICE VIDEO!!! I have a burning question maybe you can help! lets say..its done..Done!! what if you take the chicken out and it truly needs...another 10 or even 15? minutes..Ive been here several times..Is there a way to get the process going again to give it that extra time to have the meat ( any meat for example)cook Properly!!! thanks!! Hate to say it but when in doubt I OVER calculate.....its time and practice I have the xl I love it! Thanks
Yeah, with meat you can totally put it back in for a few more minutes if it's not done. Since the pot is already hot it comes back up to pressure really quickly. 🙂
Cool.. and just to think the down time for a refrigerator chicken thaw. I ordered one today not ever had used one before and thank you in kind for the tip.
Thanks for the post! About to try this today. Probably goes without saying, but you can do this same delicious thing in a regular old pressure cooker. I inherited one from the 60s from my Mom and love that thing, but my Wife and Kids were terrified when I cooked with it so got an Instant Pot for Christmas. Getting pretty good at using it, but have to admit I miss the comforting hiss hiss hiss sound of my old stock pressure cooker I grew up with :-)
Yes K.... I grew up with my grandmother using her stove top pressure cooker everyday and the hissing sound from the steam being let out, as well as the delicious smell towards the end it's something I was hoping for from the instant pot. But oh well, I still have the memories LOL.. 👍😉
I'm 72 and still remember my Mom and Grandma using pressure cookers on the stove. The problem for me is that I get distracted and sometimes forget to turn the stove off for hours. The IP turns itself off - I haven't blacked anything yet! The microwave and Instant Pot are perfect for me.
Hi. Have you ever tried using the searing function on the instant pot to crisp up the chicken? I bought a larger, different brand of pressure cooker, and it does a great job frying crispy bacon, and searing a roast before cooking. I was thinking it might work as well for crisping a chicken after cooking it. What do you think?
As usual, another great video. So very informative. If only you had a Ninja Foodi you could’ve skipped transferring the chicken to the oven (more dishes to clean) and crisp the chicken in the pot. I’m going to follow your ingredients list and doctor up my frozen Butterball turkey 🦃 the same way you did for chicken 🐓 Thanks for the info.
I haven't tried broiling after. I run out of time so we just eat it. I buy a 2-pack of chickens every weekend. I cook one fot the dogs and I make one for us. Takes 30 min in the IP. I'd love to learn how to cook the side dish with the chicken at the same time in the IP. I've had my IP since December and I'm really loving it. Chicken, rice, grains, oats, eggs, stews and soups but I haven't done the meat and side at the same time. Any suggestions and help with that would be appreciated.
I'm sure i miss you mention, but was the chicken completely frozen or it wasn't? Thank you for the video, i like how simple and quick your recipes are and you make the recipes for single people as well as a family like yours ❤
Love the videos! One question - did you add any liquid to the IP? Or is the frozen bird enough to bring it to pressure? I probably missed a step watching the video - sorry!
FYI ... letting you know ... The Android phone (player store) has 2 apps ... Instant Pot Smart Cooker & Best Instant Pot Recipes. Plus dozens of pressure cooker recipes apps ... etc. So if you can try out those Recipes and test them out first very much appreciative!
We did this it was amazing! After the chicken was done we put it on a baking sheet and tented it with foil and then started making the rice. We strained the liquid to get out the lemon seeds and lemon rind from the lemon slices we used when the chicken was cooking. We measured that leftover liquid and added rice to match. We usually make 2 cups rice to 2.5 cups water and there was almost exactly 2.5 cups liquid after the chicken was done so it was pretty easy. We also added carrots, celery, and onion with the rice. Everyone thought this was the best chicken dinner ever! So glad you mentioned about making it with rice.
oooh you are so welcome . your comment just made my day . and i invite you to lock up our traditional saudi food (mandi) its the same way but in different test .and i bet you would like it
Hi There! I watched your video and my chicken turned out great!! But I have to tell you,,, well, for starters, I have a 6 qt. IP also.. My ck. Weighed 4.70,, set the pot , manual,50 minutes. NR for 10 min. Blood was running,,,reset for 8 min...Blood still running!!! Reset again,,manual for 14 min... Ck. Finally done!! So, I don't have a clue why the times were soooo off... But they were... Next time, I'll know,, Other than dinner running wayyy behind,,,it was good! 😱
I tried this and the bones from the chicken were so soft I ate the entire chicken, bones and all. Now I'm addicted to eating bones, I even threw in a fish head and bones from a fish with my chicken and the taste was amazing. Who would have thought, chicken and fish head stew!
daverdal1-IF UR EATING BONES, UR NUTS, THEY TELL U NOT TO EVEN GIVE BONES TO ANIMALS/DOGS. BECAUSE THEY TURN TO SPLINDERS AFTER CHEWING, AND TEAR UP THE ORGANS/ ANIMALS-DOGS INSIDES. HOPE UR JOKING, CAUSE UR SUPPOSE TO HE HUMAN......RIGHT?...…..SMFH
@@mrs.berniemadoff3324 the bones turn to mush. I cook the skeleton for 2 hours in the pressure cooker. Haven't had any issues. Just feel amazing after eating everything. Its called Bone Broth. Splinters only happen to uncooked bones. Try it.
I just got my Instant Pot - and started to cook a chicken that was partially frozen. Put the timer for 38 minutes - but noticed that the float valve did not go up until minute 31. It is my understanding that the timer should not start until the float valve pops up. Is this normal - or perhaps this happened because the chicken was partially frozen? - Thanks!
+Wild Swan Thanks for using my link! 😊 The instant pot has 3 heat settings... Normal, Less and More. It also has a High and Low pressure option. If you search online you can find out what temperature each of those are for the different programs. The majority of the time I just use the "Manual" setting on high pressure.
My Breville Fast Slow Pro did not like this recipe. The pressure would keep going up and down I suppose as icy cold liquid melted out of the frozen block of chicken. Both times we've made this the Breville shut off before coming to pressure so we had to restart the process (and guess at a slower cooking time). We have an instant pot too but it's the Mini. Maybe we'll have to try frozen game hens in the Mini.
So interesting, I did this exact same thing but I did use my trivet and added some carrots and celery and my 4.54 pound frozen chicken was not done in the middle at 50 minutes on high pressure in the instant pot. I am wondering if being at a higher elevation affects the way this machine cooks..?
I realize this is from last year but have a question. Do you still like and use your instant pots a lot? My worry is the stainless steel pot and the care of it and cleaning it. Is it hard? Does food stick and hard to clean? Do you wish it were teflon coated instead? Thank you.
Awesome! I'm going to try this in my #PowerPressureCookerXL with bone-in frozen chicken breasts. I hope it works! PS: The tip about removing the tampon and giblets before freezing is something neither I nor my wife have every thought of. #GreatTip!

This looks incredible! I can't wait to try it!
I'm sure i miss you mention, but was the chicken completely frozen or it wasn't? Thank you for the video, i like how simple and quick your recipes are and you make the recipes for single people as well as a family like yours ❤
Yes, the chicken was completely frozen 😘

Target has the Duo current 9/21 version of the Instant Pot for $99.99. It is probably all I would need. Thinking about it, thanks for all the info!
Love the videos! One question - did you add any liquid to the IP? Or is the frozen bird enough to bring it to pressure? I probably missed a step watching the video - sorry!
+Carlton Olson Yes, I added 1 cup of water at the beginning. 😊
Thanks! I was pretty sure I missed something! Thank you for all the help - I eased into using my IP thanks to your videos!
I haven't tried a frozen chicken in my instant pot. I will try this.
My wife and I purchased an Instant Pot recently. We enjoy your videos.Have you ever cooked a Turkey breast?
I've done boneless skinless turkey breast before. I cooked it way down and shredded it for tacos. Worked great!
FYI ... letting you know ... The Android phone (player store) has 2 apps ... Instant Pot Smart Cooker & Best Instant Pot Recipes. Plus dozens of pressure cooker recipes apps ... etc. So if you can try out those Recipes and test them out first very much appreciative!
Hi
thanks for the aps, at times like this, cooking could be cool.
OK let me tell u how we do it in saudi arabia we put rice instead with the water so it soak all the faling juce that is coming out of the Chicken
aziz about how much rice, a cup?
We did this it was amazing! After the chicken was done we put it on a baking sheet and tented it with foil and then started making the rice. We strained the liquid to get out the lemon seeds and lemon rind from the lemon slices we used when the chicken was cooking. We measured that leftover liquid and added rice to match. We usually make 2 cups rice to 2.5 cups water and there was almost exactly 2.5 cups liquid after the chicken was done so it was pretty easy. We also added carrots, celery, and onion with the rice. Everyone thought this was the best chicken dinner ever! So glad you mentioned about making it with rice.
oooh you are so welcome . your comment just made my day . and i invite you to lock up our traditional saudi food (mandi) its the same way but in different test .and i bet you would like it
Syrian American here, nothing like rice and chicken!
Will defiantly try this next time. Thanks for sharing!
Great video but where was the taste test :( Was it tender or just a bit tough, going from frozen to cooked in such a short time. Looked very tasty.
Who would have thought, chicken and fish head stew!
daverdal1 your kidding right ?
@@Heartfelt-zv7wh no I'm serious. Fish head and chicken! its amazing. Cooked food is different than raw food.
daverdal1-IF UR EATING BONES, UR NUTS, THEY TELL U NOT TO EVEN GIVE BONES TO ANIMALS/DOGS. BECAUSE THEY TURN TO SPLINDERS AFTER CHEWING, AND TEAR UP THE ORGANS/ ANIMALS-DOGS INSIDES. HOPE UR JOKING, CAUSE UR SUPPOSE TO HE HUMAN......RIGHT?...…..SMFH
Wha??? U can't be serious... ?
@@mrs.berniemadoff3324 the bones turn to mush. I cook the skeleton for 2 hours in the pressure cooker. Haven't had any issues. Just feel amazing after eating everything. Its called Bone Broth. Splinters only happen to uncooked bones. Try it.
Really enjoy your videos. Thanks for all the ideas.
- Thanks!
Wow, that looked really good, going to try it. Thanks.
Could you make gravy with that liquid left in the pot after it cooks?
You sure can!
Okay, that's it. I need an Instant Pot
Can the temperature be set manually? I thought I saw you setting it, but wasn't sure. Thanks for sharing and I'll use your link when I buy it!
Thank you so much! I've been wondering how long to cook a whole chicken from frozen! Will be trying this tomorrow!
So interesting, I did this exact same thing but I did use my trivet and added some carrots and celery and my 4.54 pound frozen chicken was not done in the middle at 50 minutes on high pressure in the instant pot. I am wondering if being at a higher elevation affects the way this machine cooks..?
Elevation does affect pressure cooking times. You might have to experiment with recipes to find what works for your area!
Super simple! Thanks for sharing!
Do all these instructions for cooking apply for a NuWave pressure cooker too?
Probably, but I have not tried the NuWave pc
Is it 10 mins per pound on frozen chicken only?
I realize this is from last year but have a question. Do you still like and use your instant pots a lot? My worry is the stainless steel pot and the care of it and cleaning it. Is it hard? Does food stick and hard to clean? Do you wish it were teflon coated instead? Thank you.
I use my IP every day... And usually more than once! I've had no problems with cleaning the SS pot. No Teflon needed for me!
Hi! Can I deep fry it to make a fried chicken after cooking it in a pressure cooker?
Awesome! I'm going to try this in my #PowerPressureCookerXL with bone-in frozen chicken breasts. I hope it works!
PS: The tip about removing the tampon and giblets before freezing is something neither I nor my wife have every thought of. #GreatTip!
What if the chicken is thawed? Is it the same time, or it should be less time?
Time to try this. Your vid is much appreciated.
Was that on high pressure or low?
thanks so much for this!
Love her channel. Great stuff
For crisper skin, shouldn't you pat the bird dry so you are not steaming it? Very similar to cooking with Sous Vide.
that's awesome! thanks for the idea!
Was it tender? My chicken turns out tough.
Quick question Nili: is this the 6Qt pot? Thanks ;)
Yes, 6qt duo 🙂
Your the best. I am going to try one this weekend thanks.
It looks great, but I have one question... Why didn't you clean your chicken before cooking it?
Bellą Bellą - the latest recommendations are against washing chicken, to stop the spread of any contaminants around your kitchen. See details here: drexel.edu/dontwashyourchicken/

Does the cooking time differ if it's a defrosted chicken vs frozen? Thank you. I can't wait to make this. :)
A good rule of thumb is 10 minutes per pound for frozen and 6-8 minutes per pound defrosted. :)
@@IndigoNili Is this the same for say frozen chicken thighs.....10 min/lb?
