Volkswagen Golf - Is it still the benchmark hatchback?

- This much improved version of the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf might just be all the car you'll ever need.
Volkswagen's Golf is the family hatchback against which all others are judged - and in seventh generation form has proved to be the best selling version of this car ever made. Now it's got a smarter look, an all-new 1.5-litre TSI engine option, more sophisticated media connectivity and a range of important detail changes. If you're shopping in this segment, you might be asking yourself why you should buy a Golf. But perhaps the more pertinent question is whether there's now really any reason why you shouldn't.

This is by far the best VW review I have seen. Typical RUclips algorithm will keep it buried within the sea of RUclips videos.
Thanks very much for watching! If you haven't already subscribed, it really helps us out 👍 bit.ly/319ZKoT
SOLD! Yes I'm sold on the VW Golf, have owned 8 of them over the years. All fine cars and although I own an Audi A5 at the moment will be ordering a 2019 GTI.
Don't listen to the people talk about reliability, treat the Golf well it will also treat you very well, just my thoughts.
Thing is, I have treated my golf well yet still has issues, not great on a 1 year old car
how many litre is better? diesel or petrol?
What is to hear from other people about reliability?
Thank you, for delivering the most detailed, comprehensive review, of the Mk 7.5. No gimmicks, just facts, figures and guidance 👍
Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching 👍
Best detailed review of Golf's on RUclips 👍
Many thanks for watching, Conor!
I happen to like the hour-long reviews. More detailed information about the car,and the fact that the presenters enunciate well without stammering and stuttering.
Thanks for the feedback Oscar :)
The most thorough golf review anywhere....thx!
"You get what you don't pay for". I love that catchphrase. And pretty much sums up what happens to people in the segment who aren't smart enough to buy Golf.
Karl P Nothing to do with being smart or not if someone simply does not like the Golf, but of course the sheep will follow and think anyone who doesn't like VW is not normal. Your comment says so much about todays society. For the record ive had brand new Skoda, VW and Audi and ALL had major faults within a few days of leaving the showroom. Never again, what a waste of money. Subaru for me next. A brand that knows how to make tough reliable cars.
This is one of the best cars that as ever made...love them
I bought my VW Golf S with the 1.8T gasoline engine in Feb. 2017 and paid $17,500. I compared it with the VW GTI and actually felt the basic Golf didn't give away that much in acceleration to the GTI, and as for road manners, was a more comfortable ride. Today, I have over 16,000 trouble-free miles, have achieved 49 mpg on the highway with it, and around town driving I average about 31 mpg. In my view, it is an outstanding automobile, a handsome, timeless design, and thank God, does NOT look like the garish sheet metal originating in Asia. I plan on keeping this car for many, many years and couldn't be happier with my purchase.
Great to hear feedback from an owner with some miles on the clock. Thanks for the feedback 👍
how many litre is better? diesel or petrol?
My mk5 1.9 only has 105bhp but I still appreciate the way it handles thanks to the decent rear suspension. 0 to 60 times don't have any importance when you're going around a corner.
The most thorough and professionally presented VW Golf segment I’ve seen on RUclips - by a country mile.
Thanks John - we love reading comments like these on a cold Monday morning! 👍
I am driving my moms golf mk7 2016 for 3 years now because she doesnt drive much and all in all it is a very reliable, comfortable car. I did my driving test on a mk7 gtd and drove my moms golf with 110 ps. Because i love the mk7 so much i bought myself a mk7 but this time the 1,5 tsi with 150 ps. The mk7 just looks so good in my eyey especially with r line. Even though i know that the mk8 wass 1 month away i still decide to buy the mk7 facelift. I didnt like the interior and exterior of the mk8 . The Golf 7 facelift is definitely the best golf for me.
You did the right thing my friend hopefully you're enjoying your 1.5 tsi golf.
Have this one in same year 1.4L turbo SE trim. Love it so much it’s peppy and can get into lanes quickly even without sports mode. So cute and such a fun car to drive. My friends doubted the VW but then they drove it they said it was so fun and different from any car they’ve driven before.
Love your reviews by the way - comprehensive and informative. :-)
Thanks for the feedback Chris
Excellent Review. After owning mini vans for several years, it was time to buy a small affordable car. I bought an Elantra about 5 years ago, brand new. I was quite happy with it. Then in 2017, it was time to renew my car and instead of another Elantra, after reading several reviews, and for a bit of more money, I bought a new Golf TSI 1.8.. If I were to rate the Elantra, it would be a 6, and the Golf a 9. I think the GTI would get my 10, based on a couple of test drives I did. There is no comparison: the suspension is way better; the turns are super nice, the power is amazing, you just feel the kick; the interior is super much better, the visibility and maneuverability are just superb compared to the Elantra, the practicality, of just bringing boxes from Home Depot or Costco, much more convenient. The Sound System, much much better; the cabin noise, it has much less noise than the Elantra. Driving in the snow is not a problem with the Golf, the Elantra does not feel that secure. Anyway, there is no way I can complain about my Golf TSI. I now want to get a GTI, but it's a bit more, but I'll get it. Cheers.
Thanks for the feedback 👍 its great to hear back from an owner ✔

I had several cars over the years, 1988 911 turbo, w211 e class 240, 98 slk 200, truimph tr7, w202 180, citroen c1 c2 etc. My wife bought herself an mk7 1.4 and i just loved it. Very easy and comfortable to drive, very good driving position, very well gadgets, very well performance for a wife car and it looks good. I really do consider buying the GTI myself when i have the money.

Has it been reliable?
Yeah but can it play cassette tapes? My VW can!

There is an Aux / Line In socket (well, there is in mine), so you can plug in a Walkman.
I want a Golf 7 from 2017 as my first car at around 2023 or something. My folks got the Polo 2018 last summer & it is excellent so far but I love the rear lights of the Golf a bit more :) Though I love that the radio unit on the new Polo is at the top and not under the vents like on the Golf.

The 1.4 TSI is a good engine, plenty of torque and power and very quiet too
Well done living in the USA and we don't get many of the choices that the rest of the world :).
That's a lot of options! 🤤
I've owned one of these for about 18 months now - it's very good overall, despite all the haters on here (who probably can't afford one!). A well made car which is very good to drive - my only slight reservations are that the 7 speed DSG can be a bit hesitant sometimes and road noise is higher than in my previous mk6 Golf - possibly because this one has Kuhmo tyres? The Carnet applications are a bit clunky and not really of much use. I love the adaptive cruise control, which works superbly. Overall, the Golf is still the definitive small family hatch - but dare I say I do find it a touch boring!
Hi Chris, great to hear the opinion from an owner. Thanks for the comment.
I don’t think it’s Boring. I think it’s just not futuristic and too classic looking. They are just slightly more upmarket Ford Focus
"(who probably can't afford one!)"
Don't take this the wrong way, but if there was a list of "shit Golf owners say" this statement would be at the top. This is not an expensive car.

This is a very good car, a superb all rounder if you're in the market for a front wheel drive, comfortable and roomy hatchback. My only problem with cars these days is the fact that everyone is obsessed with soft touch materials and cars filled with technology instead of just enjoying the way a car drives and handles. Most problems these days on modern cars are now related to tech issues. They are too complex, and the blame should lay firmly at the door of the manufacturers for not assembling or testing the vehicles properly before putting them on the market. Its an absolute disgrace that we still get so many reliability issues in 2020, yet cars are constantly increasing in price ! The public are being made mugs of.
Can't confirm this. My MK7 TGI facelift has the full technology pack an it makes the difference compared to my former MK6. DSG, auto distance control with stop and go support, active lane assist, trafix sign recognition, automatic heating control, adaptive light, cornering light, heated windshield, parking heater, rear camera, parking assistent, emergency brakes, navigation system with voice control, comfort steering wheel, dynaudio sound, automatic dimming mirror and much more. All is working pefect and makes this care so nice, safe and comfortable to use.
Before I bought it I looked in detail to other care maker offers but even the premium care makers couldn't beet for me the MK7. In the some of it's properties, it is not beatable. For it's price you get a lot of value.
Awesome reviewer, the best by far! 😎
Thanks for the feedback andy palin.
Great car maker but after the exhaust fumes scandal... i wouldn't spend a dime on them... As always the review was great!
Priest Haris get the petrol. Only dinosaurs get diesels now unless its a Land Cruiser etc with no other choice.
Such a good and detailed review.
It is a bit funny that you still compare this to the old Focus while having already uploaded the new Focus review. Cheers!
Hi Gkoulidis, thanks for the comment. This video was made before the Focus review, just uploaded after :)
The Golf has a 2017 plate...! Guess this video was made some time around then?
There's a new mark 8 Golf coming soon. Hopefully VW will improve on the IMO cardboard box styling.
[edit] PS if you are not UK-based the car's registration plate "KX17 PDY" (1:47) shows the year of registration. The "17" in "KX17 PDY" refers to a March 2017 and if it was a "67" (17+50) refers to a September 2017 registration.
Then again the title of this review is "Volswagen Golf 2019..." I presumed it is really a "Volkswagen" but it could be a Volswagen! :)
@@melcanuck5951Thanks for the comment, the new mk8 is due to reach UK showrooms in the final quarter of 2019. You are right, this is not a brand new review. It was uploaded after demand from our customers. Still being a current model we thought it was a good idea. Thanks for noticing the typo :)
Reliability is primo for me, so long as I can keep driving my car as long as I choose until I can afford to buy again. That is most important to me.
VW are only average in terms of reliability

I still buy music CD’s and also use usb and Bluetooth with my phone . I like options

Upper trim in the us still has CD and SD card reader in the glove box. Also AUX input next to the usb port in front of the shifter in the storage area. Lower trim don't even have AUX input.
He just sold me a 11 year old Golf Mk7 1,4 petrol I being laying my eyes on for two days!
The golf still looks like something from the 1990s especially the rear. I own one, but I do regret buying one
Tom Jardine I agree. I think it looks cheaper looking then it used to particularly the back.
Hi Tom Jardine, Thanks for the comment. What is it you regret about buying?
OSV Not very engaging to drive, and the seats are not comfortable
downburst1 Since the diesel scandal, I think VAG has cut corners. The new T rock and Polo have some dreadful hard plastic
@@tomjardine100 well it's never been the most engaging to drive, the Golf is more of a dull but comfortable car. If that's not your thing I suggest you look at the sportier end of the hatch spectrum, the Focus and Mazda 3. Even the Seat Leon is relatively lively compared to the rest of VAG cars from what I hear (haven't been able to drive a new model though).
Top class review as always, would you say that the new Kia ceed is as refined and comfortable as the golf.
Hi Links Lizard, Thanks for the feedback. The Ceed is a great car, but as to refinement and interior comfort we think the Golf still takes it.
It won't be as refined but much better value for money all things considered, also not as dull.

Very informative review, but the 1.5 Tsi evo engine, has been having horrendous issues regarding “kangarooing”, especially at cold. This has occurred with the engines in Seat models also. Real shame and highly disappointing!
Thank you for the feedback, David
Nice car to drive but fuel pump issues, immobiliser issues( would cost nearly a £1000), suspension issues from shock absober to link bars even uneven break pad wear off would cost a fortune at one point, window elec switch fail, boot would fail to open as well. Jus to sort the boot lock could costs £200 from the dealer. These are the common issues time to time. Good engine and gear box. Reliable car? I dont know but expensive to maintain.
Christy Jeba Yet, cheaper cars are more reliable. I used to own a Focus it was 10 year old and nothing went wrong on it
Christy Jeba Shouldn’t happen on a car like that
Super review. The perceived quality (quality of build and interior materials) is fantastic. Quality of the engineering, not so much. I wouldn't trust one over my Honda for reliability, I'm afraid.
Thanks for the feedback Nodge. The interior is done to a good standard, beating a Honda for reliability is a hard task :)
@@OsvUkVehicleSupply very true - and the interior is a thing of soft touch beauty. It makes my Jazz look like an 18th Century hovel.
VAG cars are well built and relatively solid, however it’s the mechanical parts which need to be reliable

Hi there, are you interested in getting a VW Golf?
The Golf is indeed a practical and comfortable car, but unless you buy a Golf GTi or R it is a terminally dull car in my opinion.
JDM Guy I have the GT spec one, and it’s a lot better than the other golf trims
Tom Jardine I agree the GT is 👌🏾
Dull ? Let me guess what sort of driver you are with a username like that. Surprise me...
Of course not, it’s totally outdated since long time ago.
The new Mercedes A class is by far the category standard from technology to design since 6 months ago.
Thanks for the comment, the A-Class is a fantastic car, especially with its new infotainment system.
OSV yes it is. Greetings
The A Class makes the Golf look like a bargain - it's full of Renault technology at crazy prices
chris penn The best hatchback is the new Ford Focus, it looks like something from this century, unlike the golf
Yeah but you have to spend serious money on an A Class because the standard engine and standard trim cars are all built with Renault engines the exact ones that went into Renault Meganes and when you are spending over 20k on a hatchback you really don't want a rebadged Renault.
What reviewers don't tell you: the TSi engines are hesitant at low revs and progress can be jerky in heavy traffic, the steering is incredibly numb; it literally has no feel. The dreary, unimaginative interior has the occasional trim rattle, the cruise control is fiddly and unergonomic, the dashboard reflects badly in the windscreen, the shiny trim on steering column reflects badly and the front seats lack thigh support if you are slightly taller than average. Another problem is wind noise from the door mirrors.
Mark McMarkface The road noise is dreadful, even at low speeds.
Interesting, I don't agree with any of the points you made
Engine, we might have experience with different engine or gearbox, DSG does have issues at low speeds, across all manufacturers, but the new 7 speed DSG should be much better. Manual with 110kW engine is excellent, despite utilizing a small turbo, I can't complain about lack of power when needed even at low revs. Manual gearbox does give more control over engine stalling than current DSG gearboxes do, reason for some premium carmakers to revert to traditional gearbox.
Steering doesn't have the best feedback but, in my opinion, is better than average and very precise.
Interior is better than competition, hands down. It looks and feels good, controls are well positioned and logical. I've yet to hear any trim rattle or see a reviewer mention it, I took a long time to watch reviews of potential cars before buying one. The mk7 and 7.5 have been out for so long it should have surfaced it was a real issue.
Cruise control literally takes one click with your thumb. Speed adjust, disengage, with further single clicks. There's grooves for your thumb to help locate the buttons without help of visual confirmation.
Dashboard reflection is what it is on every other car, black matte plastic reflects minimal light.
I have yet to see a steering column reflection. What I do sometimes see, is side-vent silver decoration trim reflection on side-windows.
I'm 187cm and I can't complain about lacking thigh support.
There is some noise from mirrors but overall, this car is quieter than competition. It's unexpectedly noisy with studded winter tires though, maybe VW focused insulation on frequencies generated by summer tires and not winter tires. I have no experience with stud-less winter-tires.
Tipsy Penguin My tyres are sport Maxx ones, and very noisy for some reason.
idk, maybe very large rims, like 18"? Larger rims inevitably make more noise. Or check that the pressure isn't over the recommended. Your tires are of same grade as the ones I'm using
My golf was really silent
Hell yeah.. TDI is King
Stanley Kania until diesel is seen as antisocial, which is pretty much the way its going. No need for diesel these days in most cars. Lot of brands dropping them from the range now. Get in the modern age matey but judging by your comment, im going to guess you only like the TDi because it has a turbo and a lot of torque, which of course is handy for the stereotypical aggressive driving yeah ?
Great reviews, but, maybe if you shorten them, you'll have more viewers. Personally I can't handle a one hour review.
Thanks for your feedback. We will take that on board. You will find some shorter reviews on our channel too. What are the most important elements of the review for you?
@@OsvUkVehicleSupply Hi, and thank you for asking, but you cover all elements needed for one who's interested in a new car. Your reviews a great!
But because you're asking, and thanks again for that! Most important elements for me are:
Quality of paint(thickness for good aging).
Quality of cabin materials (No rattling noise).
Comfortable seats for long trips.
Road+tyre+wind noise in cabin.
Crash test ratings.
Acceleration(torque) in high speeds for overtaking safely (80-140km/h)
0 to 100km/h is pointless to me.

Try telling this to Tappio Laukkannen, his Golf rolled at 20mph , the car can't handle tight corners , the wheel base is too short and with a driver weighing more than 10 stones it's an accident waiting to happen. Thats why you buy used and let some other sucker take the fall. Buying brand new is a false economy. Heck even Ex demo cars for 1 year old are 25% cheaper than a brand new car and the demos are always high spec too.
I bought a vw golf for £18,000 and now it’s worth £16,000 so that’s £2000 in depreciation in 2 years
@@forza223bowe5 A 2 year old Golf is not worth £16000 you Muppet.
It IS an investment if you dont intend trading it in after three years. Thats how to waste money big time. My next car I hope to keep at least ten years. I cant afford one. But wouldn't buy it anyway or a focus. Why? I really hate electric brakes. Unfortunately for them, so does a friend of mine who bought a Qashqai, and another who has a Golf.
Experience of an Insignia hire car with one of these horrible things put me off for life!
i30 handbook: 2 sides for manual handbrake, 10 sides for electric brake+hill assist. Read it twice, still don't understand it.
Why replace simple perfection? Why remove a major control and replace it with something with so many non-instinctive operational variables. Note that the control algorithms vary between manufacturers as well, and some even have 2 buttons!
If you've been driving a while you have to re-train your muscle memory.
Sure you can learn, but what about the hire car scenario or a company pool car? You get in and drive a car you can't fully control straight away. All for somewhere to put your coffee? DOH!
More complexity = worse reliability, it's a well known engineering rule.
If it goes wrong, you can't fix it, neither can your average garage..main dealer only.
With a handbrake, it's simple, it's easy and you can feel what's happening. With a switch you rely on hope.
For me, a deal breaker.
Lovely car otherwise!

The sophisticated suspension is not enough to overcome a poor reliability history - the dealer network will fight tooth and nail to deny any chronic problems that occur - they are abnormally expensive to maintain - after 3 - 4 years they become a "money pit" of repairs. The Asians in general are more reliable , are cheaper to maintain and hold their resale value better. I gave up on German cars years ago.
Hi Neil, thanks for the comment 👍 It is true to say eastern brands have excelled in reliability and have caught up with the sophisticated tech and luxury interiors of their German rivals

The Golf hasn't been the benchmark since the 1980's mark 2! Boring , unreliable and way behind the competition to drive. If you want to buy an unreliable lemonade shandy car for champagne money go ahead. The rest of us who know anything about cars and aren't hoodwinked by this review will buy one of its MANY better competitors...
Cole Torrens The golf needs a big overhaul it’s far too boring. The new Arteon is good looking so it proves they can make a nice car
@@tomjardine100 Volkswagen haven't made a good Golf since the MK4
Toyota Corolla is the bench mark
CJC the Corolla is a brilliant car.
Why doesn't the whole word operate in km instead of miles. Jesus christ
Jarrod Lee Have you tried Googling that ? In Britain we have miles. Is that a big problem for you ? If it is, then go anger management classes or something.
One of the most overrated cars..
Lol. :) That Lexus logo tells me you don't like cars.
@@duncanidaho7494 don't be jealous 😂😂😂
Agreed. The Golf and VW's generally are very overated and over hyped by British press.
JDM Guy Probably because they are paid to sponsor their cars
@@duncanidaho7494 That Lexus logo tell me he has money and sense a rare combination when it comes to buying cars.
A boring and predictable review, in which cliché jostles with cliché. Two minutes was enough for me.
