- Hay fever has an awful habit of ruining what should be the nicest time of the year. But what is it? And why is it called ‘hay fever’? Kate explores the science of allergies, and hunts through the research for a cure.

How to prevent hay fever? Hay fever isn’t caused by hay, and isn’t really a fever. Allergic rhinitis is the technical name, but what’s it all about? At its centre, hay fever is an inflammation and irritation of the mucus membranes in the nose. Wind-pollinated plants hurl their pollen into the atmosphere, which finds its way into your nose and starts to wreak havoc. Much like other allergic reactions, hay fever is the result of your body fighting off the injected pollen as if it were a disease-causing invader. Antigen presenting cells, T cells and B cells launch into a hyperactive, over enthusiastic frenzy, ultimately causing symptoms that, although crucial when fighting off real infections, are a needless frustration.
Is there a cure? Not yet, but one strand of new research is finding hope in an unlikely source: parasitic worms. The idea is that the worms alter our immune system to avoid being repelled. These alterations just might hold the key to staving off hay fever, and finding summer happiness at last.
This film is part of our series that provides the blueprint for a scientifically perfect summer. Taking a different topic each Thursday, the videos will gradually build up an equation for summer perfection; a summer survival guide certified by science.

I had the worst hay fever from 12 to 40 years old. I had a serious accident at 40 and after a massive blood transfer I never got hay fever again.
🙂
Yay? …
I think I'll just keep to the antihistamines thank you.
If antihistamines cure your hay fever, you're lucky. I want to chop my fucken head off during the bad parts of the year (spring, summer, fall).
Nope anything to help ill take the worms the anihistimines are absolute rubbish
Hay fever is so annoying but yeah no worms for me
Cetirizine doesn't work for me. I don't know what to do
@@mikeoxlong7607 Do nasal steroids help?
thumbs up if sneezing hurts like pits of hell
Julie Moore if I could thumbs up x50 I would
Woop woop 🙌
Julie Moore yep
Julie Moore and eyes hurt
Bananarama 2 yeah
You lost me after you mentioned eating a worm
haha same here
"Eat ze worms" good grief , you couldn't make it up
I hate hay-fever
And i hate how people who don't have treat people who do ever has hayfever.
Teachers forced me to stay outdoors
I got kicked out of the medical room.
And i wasn't allowed to take medicine
Ye worst part is when people don’t recognize it and don’t recognize how much you’re suffering during this season.
Ikr same
I love seeing how the immune system deals with invading cells
I have very bad hay fever so in May, it’s like hell and I get a sore throat like I have Tonsillitis. I feel like I literally have Influenza!
Yeah, I’ll just stick to covering my nose in vasaline
I'm 30 and have just had my first ever hay fever. My ears are blocked, by throat glands swollen, nose blocked, headache, just feel sore all over.
I have hay fever but I’m more affected by dust than pollen and stuff
Isn’t polllen hayfever tho ?
I have hay fever because of genes.
My mom has it, her sister, my grandmother and her dad.
And it suks
Hayfever was first described as far back as ancient Greek literature.
By the 1700s, English diaries comment on "Summer afflictions" describing hayfever and noting those who can afford, move to the sea side for the summer.
I am just astounded that there's no cure. But then, as my Bio Chemist lecture at Cambridge once said "why sell a cure to a non life threatening allergy when they make billions on drugs that help reduce the effects"
I also find it interesting to observe that actors, politicians, sportsman, singers, monarchs show neither sneezing fits or any signs of hayfever?! Must be just a HUGE coincidence that all these folks haven't got hayfever?!
...or
I hate the fact people see hayfever as less, i can barely breathe and the medication doesn't even work
Are you watching these people 24/7? Teach me your ways 👁
I think I've just been HeyFever pilled. Big pharma are SUPRESSING THE CURE!!!
The worst pain I have ever felt and still feeling
I do Benadryl along with Sudafed. It is horrible right now in the Midwest. My black car has been outside for two days and now it’s yellow. Also, this hayfever really affects my eyes. So red and itchy
I'll try the worms thank you. This year I've had the worst hay-fever ever. I didn't even know I had hay-fever. I just thought I got sinus infection (cause of the sinus pain and feeling like my face would fall off) and this year especially it has attacked my eyes, again, I thought I had conjunctivitis.
So worms shut down the detection system. How is this not HIV-like and dangerous?
Silvan Geissmann These helminths wouldn't shut the immune system down, they'd make your immune system concentrate its efforts towards an actual threat, regulating immune reactions.
Silvan Geissmann Worms pacify our immune response by deactivating certain immune cells which means that our immune response is less strong against things such as worms and allergens. It's mode of action is focussed particularly on the IgE pathway. IgE is the antibody that is involved in parasitic infections and in allergic responses, but not in much else (though this could lead to slightly higher vulnerability to secondary parasitic worm infections). Instead, it's the IgG antibody that is most active in our bodies in the fight against most human pathogens, such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. HIV on the other hand directly infects immune cells and actually takes residence in there. It gradually shuts down our entire cell mediated immune response by either directly or indirectly killing off a vital part of the system - CD4+ T cells.
Where can I find the worms to stop my hayfever?
@@jackweber1319 in ur garden 🪴 I didn’t do that I’d rather have it forever
What happens if a worm evolves to become deadly
I'll stick to itchy eyes and antihistamines thank you very much
Same no worms 🪱
How many years do I have to wait until someone makes a vaccine for hayfever? The found one for covid in months
This cant work as it would just make your immune response stronger
Its nearly 5 years since the video, has there been any progress for hay fever medication? I hate suffering from this gross allergy. If yes, please respond
Where can I sign up for that research? I don't mind swallowing that worm as long as it helps
I HATE when my mouth is itchy aswell
My eyes hurt becuase of heyfever :(
good for u!
I have a tablet everyday
Thanks for delivering such an exciting video. I hope to see more great video like this in the future and keep the good work going on.
I'd rather have itchy eyes than parasitic worms
Same
Does dust mite allergy fall under “hay fever”?
Yeah, sadly. I'm allergic to pet dander, pollen and dust mites :D
"Hay fever is caused by an allergic response to outdoor or indoor allergens, such as pollen, dust mites, or tiny flecks of skin and saliva shed by cats, dogs, and other animals with fur or feathers (pet dander)" ~ Mayo Clinic
Lol helminths, no thank you. I'm gonna let this allergic rhinitis for a while, it's a great workout to my lower abdominal muscles.
Mine causes by dogs fur. I have itchy eyes, sneezing and runny nose.
Michelle Henderson then it’s not hayfever
You what. I didn’t see this video going into telling me I gotta eat worms to feel better
I might pass
My hay fever is so bad, where can i find this worm? Can i have couple of them please?
This is just the best video on the internet which explains all the procedures so efficiently.
I get hey fever and somtimes it is very bad on the very bad days I need a pill ever 4 hours I cant help it at all
Did she really try to convince me to bust down on a worm?!
I never experience hay fever in India until I traveled to UK.
It's not the plants you need to be afraid of. You need to be afraid of GMO cotton which you wear all the time.
Are you sure it’s not just ya hayfever playing up 😤😤😤
I think I'll keep my itchy eyes and horrible sneezes
I also have sinus polyps for 15 years
is eating a LIVE WORM seriously the best way to cure the expensive trash we have no way to control?
Yikes, allergies are the worst. Thanks for these helpful tips!
Well that took a turn.
Wow the music was quite distasteful
I'm alright thanks
I’m more than happy to discover this channel. I need to thank you for your time for this, particularly a fantastic watch!! I liked every little bit of it and I have subscribed you to look at new posts all the time.
Crazy lady really out here telling me to put worms into my body to help a cold
Why does only one of my sinuses get blocked at any given time?
Even when your nose is clear, you only breathe through one nostril at a time. Body divides the work of breathing.
These worms could solve nut allergies as well?
brod2man, helminths can certainly help with food allergies although, if you have anaphylactic reactions, I'd continue to carry an epipen even though you may not need it. There's more here:
helminthictherapywiki.org/wiki/index.php/Helminthic_therapy_personal_stories#Food_allergy
I’ll take the worms
I get so annoyed about my hay fever I get tree pollen mostly
@@otismilo6174 ikr I’m allergic to it
if I suffering her favour what medication
Absolute madness
I’d rather be bunged up then sallow worms
Worms that are less gross 😂 I laughed at that part!
I don´t know if I would rather to have a runny butt than a runny nose
:-)
Sorry, just kidding, no scientific base for that joke.
The problem is poor eating habits.
Go drink green, vegetable and fruit smoothies and you'll be cured.
I had a lot of allergies when I was young, I have nothing now because I eat well.
Are you sure? I don't eat healthy...😪
Samuel Slayz
I'm sure. I do eat junk food sometimes and the allergies come back when I do... lol
Valken I've been a vegan for years and i eat mainly greens and take vitamins yet no I'm sneezing like hell and my face has swollen and whatnot
Aliisa Kalma - being vegan and eating a lot of greens doesn't mean much, if there is no diversity you will be healthy but not so much.
Dee ! Adiós mundo - I believe in eating everything in small amounts. All fruits, green and non-green vegetables, seeds, nuts and legumes. I eat small amounts of beef, chicken, fish, eggs and honey. I've tried being vegan and felt weak.
Thank you for explaining very clearly.
Did a work write this?..
my eyes acc ich or burn a lot
Try oregano oil it works
Why does she make it sound horrible not helping
I GOT CONJUNCTIVITIS
Sting yourself with nettles. Nothing worked on me untill I tried this.
Hey, how often did you do it? Can you please share the details? Thank you.
😂😂😂😂 is she mad I can’t believe she thinks eating worms 🪱 is okay
