We used mussels for bait and chum. Painted sinkers yellow. I would skip school on St Patrick’s day, that was Flounder opener .

20 years ago I thought they were extinct. In the early 70s you could catch 60 fish an hour right behind good Samaritan hospital!

As a kid, some 60-65 years ago, I fished for flounder off the pier at Johnny's Reef at the far end if City Is. I used a drop line and an old soda can as my reel. Who had a rod back then? I'd bring home the fish to help feed my family.

The eyes of a flounder do not have the three cones necessary to see the color red. Red appears as gray to them. Also, bmpTurboGLI is correct that red is the first color to disappear in the water column. So while some fish, like Striped Bass, do have the cones to see red, they are not able to see it unless they are in relatively shallow water.
