  • When you think of mussels and clams and other bivalve animals, you might think of something as shelled and static, perhaps sitting on your plate at a fancy restaurant. But before the mussel got to your plate, it led a life-and all things considered, a surprisingly active one.

I don't know about production costs for this video but on another channel where is just a man in a studio cold reading script so minimal costs (studio rent, writer, himself, editor) & he said he turned down a sponsorship that was only willing to pay him 10k for an episode because it wasn't worth his time to make a video for that amount. He's in EU where rent & cost of living are higher but I'm pretty sure both his writer & editor are remote workers so the costs probably aren't much different for this channel that has all us based staff since this Chanel requires more than 3 people but also us wages are generally lower than EU

      Weird flex, but ok 😂
I have talked to a couple of bivalve aquaculturists, mainly oyster growers, in Washington and Oregon. The lengths they go to grow spat into adults is amazing.
For example, spat are highly sensitive to water chemistry like pH because of their tiny shells.
Also their favorite spot to set is an old shell, perhaps because "if this spot was good enough for an oyster before, it's good enough for me".

I am currently working with seed shrimp, a distant cousin. It's always incredible to me how quickly they can move around and how voracious they are. Since I'm studying enclosed freshwater systems and how to optimise them through both technological and ecological means, they serve a very important role in biodegradation and they even circulate oxygen in the otherwise still water. I'm not yet working with systems big enough to carry a freshwater clam, but the ostracods are teaching a me A LOT that I will be able to apply to their care.

@@nhokonhokopuala That being said I think we should eat bugs and fish. Did you know cockroaches and caterpillars are actually really good at building up fat and protein? If we don't domesticate them but rather provide niche spaces where they grow in population we can even restore and maintain many native species while also taking advantages of their bounty humanely. Plus fish farms can be really beneficial AND capable of being scaled up without damaging our climate, unlike with the meat industry because of its intensive use of land resources. Unlike the farmers field required to grow feedstock for cows, fish can be grown in entirely closed loop environments. I remain hopeful that we won't have to stop being omnivores because we got stuck in a bad loop for a while.

    (1,000 microns = 1 mm.) & ( 1,000 mm. = 1 metre) & (1,000 nm. = 1 micron)

We should study and proliferate the life under the black sea in labs as much as possible because black sea becomes very hypoxic very fast. From the 27.5 mol/m² in 1950s to 12.5 mol/m² in 2020s the decrase trend seems to be -0.18 ±0.016 (mol/m²)/year. Which means that if the same trend continues in at best 70 years at worst 68 years Black Sea will become anoxic it’ll be a catastrophic event. Hopefully we are missing something

Happy to see the high quality content.
We don't need expensive writing, an expert giving the world information for the love of education.
That's far more important, James is a expert with Jaming, Hank expert with Hanking and that's enough to talk to people who are experts with a lot of other things.

"Always another way" - that's downright inspirational.
And this was so COOL! Being able to see the wee things moving like that is incredible. And the fact that someone thought to use an endoscope to get a look inside the shells is just amazing.
Even the dead spat are astonishing to look at, with so much color in them. I've always liked seashells - especially bivalve shells - for the nacre and that beautiful play-of-color it can have. Seeing it in this way makes me think about just how that substance comes to be, and brings me right back around to the wonder of "I never knew that!"

makes me think about how, when i was in middle school, i picked a living clam out of a stream and took it home with me. i kept it in a mop bucket. it, of course, died, and i still feel bad about it. no one told me not to take it, i had no idea it was a living thing until i was already home with it..
