I supported Eric Clapton on his Scandinavian tour with a slot of my own songs. The whole experience was amazing. Watching him at close range is electrifying. I am so proud to have been his supporting act.
Totally true. I'm 15, and I Never heard of names as Willie Dixon, Leroy Carr, James A. Lane, if I didn't listen to Eric's From the Cradle. Now I know a lot more names, and I'm very intrested in playing music like that. Maybe he does a lot of covers, but he helped me discovering this kind of Blues
That's how I got into the original versions of some of these songs, I heard people like Clapton and Bonnie Raitt cover them, then I searched for the original versions. Or as close as I could get to the originals.
This is a clip from a TV programme of the final rehearsals for the From the Cradle tour broadcast on BBC2 (UK). I saw him at Sheffield in the UK on that tour - awesome old school blues and a welcome change from the Phil Collins produced commercial shit Clapton had been putting out for years before going back to real blues. I've still got a recording of it on VHS - must get it transferred to DVD before I wear out the tape.
This is my ALL-Time, Favorite Eric Clapton song. And before anyone chimes in....yes, I know it's actually an Elmore James Song. I just like Eric's version a lot.
elmore usually played slide in open D on a really cheap acoustice like a kay with a single coil in the sound hole and low wattage amp with everything cranked on 10, and a slide made out of aluminum . he used the covers that they used on the old t.v. tubes.
I'm actually going to come out and admit this straight - I'm a 17 year old musician, and Eric was basically the guy who taught me about all these amazing blues guys who came before him. I should probably really call myself a poser ... I had no clue who BB King was when I started listening to Eric! Then again, I was about 2 years old.
How can you adore blues and not like clapton?? He's done so much to keep the blues alive and get the younger generation involved in it. as far as the autenticity of who wrote the song words and music by mel london. Mind you mel london takes credit for messin with the Kid and junior wells says he wrote it ( I beleive jr.) LOL
composed by Elmore James and Marshall Sehorn, performed by Elmore James. And yes I have heard Tampa Red's cover, great too, so is Foghat's cover, Mick Jagger's, Eric Clapton's, Hound Dog Taylors and so on..........
one thing im sur we will agree on is dat its an amazing so im so gonna play this one live hope it goes down well, alto i couldn care less cause i ab love it!! lol
It wasn't written by Elmore James - Tampa Red Recorded it in 1940 and its based on a much earlier song. Nice slide work. Check out Tampa Red's version - he's playing a guitar with an action you could slice cheese on and its is pretty amazing...
@zfish1995 I'm not a big fan of Clapton but I'll admit this is a very good cover of Elmore. I would say that Jeremy Spencer of early Fleetwood Mac was the only guitarist who could replicate Elmore's technique.
I don't agree with Clapton's comments mostly - he says Elmore's sound was quite clean and not loud etc I think that is nonesense. However, he does a very good job playing the tune despite the band being a bit "cabaret" and in general, a bit "safe" rather than gelling together and making the tune much more organic, with feel to it.
Though EC is one of my favorite gun slingers, snakehips81 is right about EC's mischaracterization of EJ's playing style. EJ is KNOWN for attacking a lot of his songs. Not everyone can do that as sucessfully as EJ, but then, there's only one Elmore James. FYI the best song ever played on this planet is Elmore James's MADISON BLUES......don't even try to argue that....gotta go play it right now.
I must agree that it's no the tue elmore sound because with exception of peter green no one can get close but it sounds like the man if he would have disovered distortion or met with Jimmy Hendrix in his high days
Clapton's not a great vocalist but he's improved and found what works for him. I think he's always better when he sticks closer to his blues roots, when he tries to go pop like in the 80s it's hit and miss.
Whoever says EC IS not a great vocalist has never put himself before a mic. You have to try to sing a blues in E to realise How much It costs... He IS one of ThE top singers ever
@chalftits when pigpen was around he always sang the blues----you could at least give it a chance before you judge---the dead where always changing the way they played songs---songs were never played the same way. Anyway their version of "It Hurts Me Too" is very bluesy.
Is there a 2nd guy just off at the far right hand side of the stage, ALSO playing guitar ??? The rhythm guitar part keeps on playing whilst Eric is playing the slide solos. It is possible that what I am hearing is the bass guitar, up the neck, playing the shuffle part, with about as much fuzzy distortion as Eric's guitar, but I'm not overly convinced. Perhaps that guy in the wings, with a guitar strapped on is playing the rhythm part, and perhaps ONLY when Eric is not ??? That's quite some gig, only playing on certain verses, replacing what rhythm parts Eric does, when Eric is solo'ing ??? !!! Otherwise, quite a faithful version of a mix of two of Elmore's versions of the Tampa Red song. The piano player there got the piano parts pretty darn good. The bit that irks me about Elmore's version(s), and thus also Eric Clapton's version, is whether the band should stay on the 5-chord, or hastily go down to the 4-chord, before going back down to the root 1-chord. On Elmore's two versions, they are all over the place, one verse to another, so it probably left Eric wondering the best way to do that part of each verse. I still think it sounds wrong doing it the way he does it. I've been doing it that way for years, until recently, when I've decided to stay on the 5-chord. What does everyone else do ??? Not sure if Elmore knew, or maybe it was his band that didn't know !!???
ur actually right i was so caught up in different tunings i never saw the obvious! silly me sorry bout that, i was going by wha the tabs on d net wer sayin(never again) wud u believe in the past hour i tried 3 diff tunings u had me thinkin it was in Db open tunning wen wot i think u ment was Db standered tunning their 2 totally different tunings, and i played it in the c# position was kind ok but still off, but yeah fair play never opened my eyes to the simple things!! doh!!!!
Probably because EC turned his back to the camera. Unless you like looking at his ass, they had to change the shot. They managed to get a camera on him between a couple of cymbal stands, but it wasn't a good shot, so they moved it around. Makes sense to me.
"From The Cradle" is probably the best Blues Cover Album ever
impossible to argue with there my friend

You people that put Clapton down are just jealous of his talent and that he is a decent man.
In fact he is a racist who has made a fortune of of regurgitating black music.
@@MrSkeeja people like him took it back to the states. Britain had no major race issues. He was being respectful and moving music on

I like when he pushes his voice cords like this, sounds great!
A tour de force .. there ain't no body but the Master can do it like that!!!
nobody can cover a song like eric can!
Maybe better listen to Keb'Mo 's version...
Or Luther Allison
I like the original better but he does it very well especially the vocals
Luthors is incredible too! Foghat does it too, also incredible!
@@blazingchris5048 Keb Mo has a cool name, but afraid he’s less, not mo’. His playing is sparse, voice is wrong for many of his songs.
This is my ALL-TIME, favorite Blues Song! I like Elmore's original but, Eric's is just AWESOME!
Great tone from Eric's guitar and the band swings beautifully, very close to Elmore's Fire recordings with Homesick James on bass.
This is my ALL-Time, Favorite Eric Clapton song. And before anyone chimes in....yes, I know it's actually an Elmore James Song.
I just like Eric's version a lot.
allez , vous battez pas......;il est Dieu. point final..magnifique comme toujours.....HAPPY NEW YEARS ERIC

Interesting about the use of valve covers . Elmore owned a radio shop so he had access to them.
Damn, that voice! amazing... always.
Simply Fantastic!
@MysteryHunterz It was NOT written by Elmore James. It was written by Tampa Red. It was beautifully covered by Elmore James though.

awesome! EC does Elmore James. Real nice - thanks.
Clapton was never strictly blues and I think its great how he covers a wide span of music.
The legend sings !
This man has a gift only God can provide , thank you Lord for slowhand .
always wicked, long live eric clapton!
a blues classic
Superb !!!
It IS Open C# (or Db if you prefer). Tuned like an open E chord, but everything is 3 half steps lower. Really makes those tubes shake, baby!!
