    That's the key point! Mulan goes to the military environment and fights to save her family. That's it. Not once in the 1998 version she thinks of fame, not once she tries to prove her might or worth. Once the war is over, she simply goes back to her family. I loathe how this motive was erased in the live action remake.

    • @SophieLents
      @SophieLents  3 года назад +92

      Yes!! Her willingness to go to war to save her family is a vital part of this story... why messing with it? Live action is a disappointment

    • @JiReyAnimation
      @JiReyAnimation 3 года назад +30

      And even if she does try to prove her worth in this movie, it's to herself, her family, and no one else. Society may have changed as a result of her success, but that was never her intention. All she wanted was to save China so she could go home.

    • @drakke125Channel
      @drakke125Channel 3 года назад +11

      in the live action, she 'refuses' but then accepts the rewards for the physical materialism because ...that's what people want in the end in reality, which ruined the movie.
      Making a woman the 'only' qi user is also unrealistic, china has an entire history of qi users dominated by men but also there's PLENTY of female warriors who have done it as well, nowhere in the original source material in poetry has mulan been referenced to be a 'qi user'. The popularity of using 'qi' is in what I'd call 'chinese light/fantasy novels' like journey to the west.
      Disney made everything worse when they went progressive SJW woke , starting with Maleficent and Frozen and attacking the nuclear family and 'heteronormativity" , a new term made up completely by the liberal left also. The black populations suffered largely from father-less families and Black Lives Matter wishes to destroy the nuclear family as mentioned on their website. Everything is backwards today.

  • @judaihyuga
    @judaihyuga 3 года назад +115

    During the time period Mulan is set in, almost every country judged a woman's value on whether or not should could successfully marry and have kids. It's awful, but that's how things were. That being said, setting it in that time makes the message of the movie ring even louder. In spite of her entire society telling her "your a babymaker, get used to it" she manages to achieve a level recognition that few men, even ones born into status and power, could ever hope to achieve. And she did it by being clever, determined, and with the help of the few people willing to follow her lead and believe she'd pull them through. She didn't set out to be a hero, she just wanted her father to be safe, yet by the end if all her name is known by everyone in China. Still love this movie.

    During the sequence when Mulan gets ready to take her father's armor and disguise herself as a man, you can see dragon imagery throughout the entire thing, to symbolize the great dragon that watches over the family.
    Conclusion: Mushu was unable to awaken the Great Dragon because it had already left, signifying that Mulan is the Great Dragon that protects her family.
    This is further backed up by how she's sitting at the foot of the statue before the sequence begins.

      Like a woman struggling in a sexist culture. Wanting to live in a way that's not allowed, but ultimately doing it anyway, mostly to protect her dad. Struggling at first but ultimately becoming better through hard work and training. Then ultimately being recognized and accepted.

    One of the best Disney Movies of all time, I'm with you.
    BTW you REALLY should do a reaction (blind if possible) of Raya an the last dragon, because this movie is one of the best in the newer time and since I see our taste are really similiar, I think you will be going to LOVE Raya.
    Best wishes and please continue making those funny and entertaining videos of yours!
    Oh and also: I've been there too, having a crush on animated characters. Chang was one of them too, so I totally get you. xD One of the best 'Disney Princes' out there. I think I had a thing for Prince Eric as well, now that I think about it. XD Before moving on to some Anime Characters and finally arriving on 'real life' persons like Aragorn from Lord of the Rings. xD

    I'll admit it; when I was young I used to crush on the Disney princesses all the time. I see no reason it shouldn't work the other way around. So...yeah, no style points deducted in my opinion. If you want to crush on Shang who am I to say you shouldn't? More power to you.

    There's something that's not acknowledged about this time period which I think should be addressed. Yes, women were basically servants of their husbands and expected to bear children and run their homes. But men, ALL men, no matter how big or small or inclined to war they were, were the servants of their Emperor and were expected to bear arms, fight and die en masse.
    NOBODY was free back then. That's why Mulan's father ends up in the situation he does. His wife never had a son to replace him and his duties as a man never expired. He would most likely be among the first to die and the Empire would think nothing more of it than a battle statistic.

    12:49 it depends on how far you take it. I'd say some mild swooning is fine, but when you make them the background for you phone, laptop, and PC, hang posters up all around your room, and buy wifu pillows that I say you should probably see a therapist.

    Ok so I don't want to be negative, but the dubbing of Mulan in english isn't that good IMO. I haven't watched the movie in english entirely myself, because I'm not english, but from the few moments I've listened to in this reaction it's not very great IMO, especially in comparison with the voice I'm used to (french). The biggest example to me is at 26:50. It sounds and feels both fake and bland, which is extremely sad since this is such an impactful moment. Idk in french I feel the voice is much much more impactful, and here not that much. There are other examples but I haven't written the timestamps so yeah...

    If a woman was not able to be married back then they became a burden on the family best case scenario the woman would be in charge of taking care of the parents as they aged while the more successful siblings brought wealth and acclaim to the family name.
    Asian cultures have a common similarity where the group is valued over the individual whether it is the family, community, or nation. Thus if a individual or small group of people needs to be screwed over so that the family, community, nation can remain stable and prosperous then it will be done. But not only will it be done they would expect said people to volunteer to be screwed over as their willing sacrifice for the group would bring the family acclaim. Everyone has a role and if one fails or brings infamy to the family enough they would be shunned and excommunicated by the community which is basically a long drawn out death sentence back then.
    Its basically the opposite of what people see in western culture that tends to be about personal liberation and individual freedom.

    In real life the matchmaker doesnt exist. But its relatable to the history since in the old time asian parents like to match their kid with other kid through their parents. Dragon as a companion will be considered direspectful to chinese culture since in china dragon potrays as big, powerful and oftenly potrays the emperor not like stupid tiny lizard with weird accent. And also the hair cutting scene its just no for me, in ancient china men and woman both have long hair but styled in a different ways woman usually had like a comb and men always made a bun. Hair is precious if u cut your hair it means a mourning and a sign of disgrace toward a family. By the way for an information : disney just adapt the story from china from the legendary poem called BALLAD OF MULAN there is no dragon , love interest and etc. And if you want to see more accurate mulan story its on chinese remake of "mulan 2009 rise of a warrior" followed by the live action 2020

    and pleasing the man of the household. Feminist nightmare indeed!
