Apparently, James Woods had so much fun playing Hades, that he told Disney he'd reprise the role anytime they wanted regardless of the pay. Which I super appreciate, because I don't think anyone else could give us that same energy.
The guy came back for the animated series, House of Mouse, Kingdom Hearts, Disneyland attractions, he must have had so much fun. (The only Disney projects with Hades he didn’t do were the live action Once Upon a Time and Descendants)
I heard somewhere that everyone else that read for the role did Hades in the way that you might do Darth Vader or Voldemort. Then James Woods came in and voiced Hades like a satanic car salesman. Play feel so deeply in love with that idea that they decided to make the character accordingly. Of course, there is every possibility that they always wanted to make Hades like that anyway.
While this movie is VERY inaccurate with Greek mythology due to being a Disney movie for kids (Hades was not actually a villain and Zeus was NOT actually a heroic figure), it is a hilariously fun musical. I loved Phil's song, Meg's song and even Zero to Hero.
Agreed, as far as iconic Disney villains go, Hades and Yzma are right up there in the top league with Jafar, Captain Hook, Ursula, Scar, Frollo, Doctor Facilier, and Mother Gothel! Honorable mentions: Lotso Hug-n-Bear, Maleficent, and Shan-Yu
Meg is one of those really well written female characters that you actually see as strong and independent and not a bitch and or bully. She has her flaws and she’s not perfect and that’s what makes her perfect.
My favorite thing about her is that despite being strong, independant and sarcastic, she's still very vulnerable and has a caring nature. I miss that in most modern "empowered" female protagonists whose personalities are basically just some toxic masculinity with boobs and "I'm not like other girls!"
I took a mythology class, and the teacher, who generally dislikes when myths are misinterpreted or majorly changed, he readily admitted that he enjoys this movie. It wasn't accurate, but it tickled his fancy as a mythology buff, and I feel like that says something for this movie.
Myth should reflect the society it's born in. This is a reinterpretation of Heracles in the midst of superstar influence on society. It works on a level of comparison of influence vs true ideal idol.
It's not especially accurate to Greek mythology and it's a little funny that they have Hades' hair change from blue fire to orange when he's mad even though blue fire is hotter, but even with those inconsistencies this movie is still a ton of fun . I absolutely love the decision to play Hades as essentially a sleazy car salesman and Meg has the amount of sass and sarcasm I aspire for.
In IRL physics, while blue fire burns hotter it burns *cleaner* with very little smoke while orange Fire burns colder it is really inefficient at burning fuel with lots of left over Carbon and Smoke. Now when Hades is calm and collected, not very angry, he is able to think clearly hence blue fire. But when he gets angry and not thinking straight he burns orange signifying he's not thinking straight and getting emotional. Idk just a cool thought.
James Woods voiced Hades, and he is AMAZING, doesn't get the recognition he deserves in my book. He was the stand out of the movie for me, no question.

28:16 I think the thing about August was something to do with Persephone. Basically Persephone was his wife but because of something to do with her mother and hades being In the underworld he only saw her from August till spring I think. It's actually quite sweet as hades was truly in love with her and remained loyal to her in their marriage. He thought she was very beautiful and treated her like a queen. I loved your video by the way and I agree with you. Meg and Hades are so undeniably iconic.
Demeter (goddess of the hearth and harvest) became angry when her daughter, Persephone, went missing, and Zeus was unwilling to intercede. Whether willingly or unwillingly depends on the version, but because she ate 6 pomegranate seeds it was agreed between Persephone, Demeter, Hades, and Zeus that 6 months she'd be with her mother, and the other 6 months she'd be in the underworld. That is how the changes in seasons were explained in ancient Greece.
@@c.b.barlow that's very interesting, thank you for adding to this :) I must admit that I didn't know to much about the ins and outs of this subject, so I'm glad I was able to learn more about it. I think the Greek gods is a very interesting subject, but for some reason I've never properly gotten into it, I think it would be a good long term interest to get into though.
According to mythology, Hades kidnapped Persephone with the approval of Zeus (who was also her father) because he was in love with her and made her his wife. During that time she spent with him she actually started falling in love with him while her mother, Demeter was causing havoc above - famine and poverty - because her daughter went missing and Hades refused to give her back because he loved her. To show it, he made her a garden from jewels and diamonds where Persephone couldn't help, but eat a third of a pomegranate. That actually proved to be crucial, because once she'd eaten food from the Underworld, she couldn't leave. Demeter couldn't accept this, so a deal was proposed: Persephone ate the third of the pomegranate, so she had to spend the third of the year down in the Underworld with Hades and spend the rest of the year with her mother above. Everyone agreed to this, and while Persephone is in the Underworld, Demeter's mood drops which causes the plants to wither on the land because she's the goddess of harvest and agriculture - which is why the Greeks thought winter was happening (they believed only three seasons existed: summer, autumn and winter), because that was the time Persephone spent with her husband down in the Underworld. When she returned, everything started to bloom and come back to life again. Edit: Looks like I finished my tale a little late and someone managed to precede me XD.
This movie is very underrated in my opinion. The colors and art style are amazing and iconic. The music is great and the voice acting is amazing too. I was a kid when this came out and I remember getting stuff form McDonalds with Hercules characters on them. Like plates and toys. Nostalgic movie.
Zero to Hero is a montage over the months and months it took for Hercules to raise up and im betting that Meg has been around to at least push him into conflict as with the Hydra and of course it gives her glee to see Hades finally bested its not sudden love
The fates in this movie are actually based on 2 Greek myths: the actual Fates, who cut the threads of human souls when their time is up. And the Phorcides, who share a single eye and tooth between them.

Actually my dear Sophie, there's a way to turning a mortal into an immortal : the person has to drink nectar, the favorite drink of the gods but it happens only for good reasons like love. Also, all the gods have a rôle even they seem to do nothing all day. Fun fact : you recognized the " Venus of Milo " and I recognized another statue. When Meg is near the fountain during her song, we can see a statue of an angel kissing a woman. Well, this is a real statue called " Psyché and Love " exposed at the Louvre museum (except they don’t kiss on the real one). I saw it with my own eyes because I'm french and have family leaving near Paris
Three things about this movie, still probably my favorite Disney movie. Meg will always be my first Disney crush. 1. It irks me that when Hades gets mad, his hair turns red when a blue flame is actually hotter than a red flame. 2. I heard that the role of Hades was actually rewritten from a more serious role when James Woods came in for a reading and played him off like a used car salesman. 3. Would Hades have still lost if he hadn't sent the cyclops to finish Hercules?
As a kid I loved the music. As an adult, I think the decision to make use the Muses singing Gospel music to function as a literal Greek chorus was genius
I saw Hercules only yesterday, and was told that I had seen her only once when I was little. I love everything about this film, especially its characters: Hercules is really adorable in his desire for recognition, Phil is very funny and you can tell he's someone with experience. Meg is just excellent: in addition to breaking the codes of the princess who is looking for love, she has a lot of repartee and it is easy to get attached to her. Meg and Hercules are one of Disney's best couples, they're so cute together. And of course, how not to mention Hades: funny, creepy, and a great cut of flame, Hades is one of my favorite Disney villains. But although I love this movie, I can't say it's perfect either. I find that there are some scriptwriting facilities, like the fight against the titans, or the end of Hades. But despite that, it's still a fun and enjoyable movie to watch.❤
The thing you have to remember about Greek gods is that they are by there very nature, humanity itself in greater form. That definitely includes all of humanity's flaws as well. As a side note, Zeus' thunderbolts were more tool than magic, originally made by the cyclops. He is God of the sky after all, not technically God of lightning (feel free to insert Thor God of hammers joke here)
"Plans for August" i believe that's when Hades' wife Persephone lives with him over the winter. As Persephone spends spring time with her mother. He's basically saying he has stuff to do before the wife comes home.
Meg was my gay awakening. Although I really didn’t know back then. Thought „I wanted to be like her“. Only in the closet you could say that while falling head over heals for her XD
Despite the mythological inaccuracies, this movie is still a lot of fun. Great animation, gospel music and fun characters. Can you react to Dreamworks’ The Bad Guys soon?
"What have you accomplished? Yup thats what i thought. Having a diploma doesn't count; let's not pretend its useful." *someone call LifeAlert I've been attacked*
To be fair if zeus told him how to be a true hero, it would not be a Genuine act of selfless behavior, meaning hercules would die before reach meg because he viewed the act as a check box instead of a character change.
Easter eggs - The bunny and gopher (14:50) are from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and the lion skin outfit (22:57) is the villain Scar from The Lion King (1994).
That's not all : there's Marilyn Monroe on the stars during " Zéro to Héros " and another one very interesting : during Meg's song, you can see a statue of an angel and a woman kissing each other. Well, this is the almost prefect copy of a real statue called " Psyché and Love " exposed at the Louvre museum (I said " almost " because one the original, there's no kiss)
Have you heard the theory that Mother Gothel from Tangled is actually Meg in the future? It makes sense. A drop of sunshine fell to earth, (Hercules was the "little sun spot"), There's apparently a belief that when Greek gods die they turn into flowers, and since Hurcules decided to stay mortal, he would likely die before his wife like many men do. Then Meg, now old and grief stricken, tries to sing to the flower to bring back to life. The lyrics literally say "Chang THE FATES' design" "bring back what once was mine". And besides the fact that she looks Greek, has a similar hair, body type, voice, posture and sassiness, she actually uses the term "you big lug". Just like Meg. It would make sense to me, if after realizing that the flower would never again be the man she loved, she eventually, over hundreds of years, gave up hope, became sad and bitter, and reverted back to the way she was before she met Hurcules, determined not to let anyone else into her heart.
Lol. He was hypnotized to murder his first wife. He left the second one to go to war with his boytoy. Boytoy left him to join an all female society. Died single.
@@demo2823 His third wife accidentally killed him, actually. She thought the blood of Nessus would make him love her forever, and it kinda... well, it was mixed with the poison of the Hydra that Heracles used to kill the guy.
I’m pretty sure everyone loves Hades and Meg. With the 2 of them, the Muses, and Phil, this is literally the sassiest Disney movie ever. And how can you not love them? They’re funny, gorgeous, a little terrifying...In the famous words of Sophie “I mean, it’s Meg!”
Some greek mythology fans might be offended by how "inaccurate" this movie is, but to be honest, I don't like how practically ALL the characters are portrayed in those myths (cheaters, rapists, war criminals et cetera), so for me, this movie is only improving on the source material 😂😂😂
The messed up thing about the market collapsing is that it wasn't even Hercules' fault. As the sequence goes it was toppled by the discus and whatever offscreen ogre tossed it with the force of a fricking cannon.
22:57 That remind you of anyone? Or something said about that familiar face in another movie? As for Hades, he certainly has a good balance of evil and humor. A villain with personality is always nice. He's my favorite part of this movie.
Hercules in this movie is kinda sorta ish like Superman. I mean, a baby with appears from the heavens and grows up to be a hero with extraordinary powers.
2:44 - Someone clearly didn't pay attention when they talking about different types of clouds in science class... 32:48 - Bruh, even the guy voicing Hades (James Woods) *loved* the character. If you look at his IMDB page, not counting remakes, he's voiced him THIRTEEN *MORE* TIMES in games and animations. (Some of the older games could've had much smaller clips/ones taken from the movie, not sure. But still, he's reprised the character an impressive number of times.)
One thing I find funny about Zeus calling Hades "a stiff" (aka. boring) is that in Greek Mythology Hades is actually one of the few characters that doesn't have extramarital affairs, and is generally devoted both to his duty as keeper of the Underworld and his wife Persephone (though according to the myth, he did kidnap her to marry her - but it's Ancient Greece, kidnapping and marriage were practically the same thing.) Meanwhile, in Greek Mythology, Zeus goes around causing all manner of mischief, both for his wife and random mortals.
This was my favorite Disney movie of all time. It even beat out "Great Mouse Detective" and "Sword in the Stone" Its so witty and funny and remained my fav until Moana......almost 20 years later.
May I suggest watching "Every Mythical Inaccuracy in Disney's Hercules" by "The Mythology Guy" as a follow up? It's well made, quite fun and very informative.

the amount of both pop culture references and greek references (albeit out of context) easily make it an iconic movie. one of my favorite lines is 'I got plans for august'. In actual mythology, Hades 'kidnaps' (Zeus gave him the OK) Persephone, his future wife. August is likely the time, atleast in this version, when he does it.
3:30 The dead of the underworld are only souls, not zombies LOL And I don't think they're silent either, though at least they wouldn't remember their lives because Charon gives souls water from the Lethe, a river that makes all who drink it forget, as he ferries them across the Styx or they drink from the river themselves depending on the story. The three women Hades consults with are like a collage of the oracles, the Graiae (there's like half a dozen interpretations of the spelling and alternative names too), and the Fates. The Graeae were three wise, man eating women that had to share a single eye and tooth between them and were sisters to the Gorgons. The trio of Fates would spin the fibers of someone's life, measure the length for the allotment of their life, and finally cut the thread of life.
Your new video is a perfect start to my two week break after finishing another semester at my college yesterday and before I go on a three day trip to Las Vegas with my family on Monday!
To be fair there was a becoming a hero montage where it’s seems there was at least a few weeks or months of a time jump so I’m sure Meg and Herc had a few more interactions.
Sorry for double commenting but I wanted to point out that Meg's voice actor also plays a character in a Studio Ghibli movie called Spirited Away if you haven't seen that!

You like Mythology then you will love the two best movies on Mythology. The first one is from 1963 Jason and the Argonauts. This movie has a scene with Skeletons that gave inspiration for Sam Rami, when he did his third Evil Dead movie, Army of Darkness. The second movie is from 1981 Clash of the Titans. This movie has the best looking Pegasus which became so iconic Tri-Star Films used the horse as its logo. It has the best looking Medusa. The Kraken is in the movie. A two headed dog is in the movie. Giant Scorpions, and a Giant Vulture. It is about the adventures of Perseus and how he falls in love with Androma. The effects in both movies were done by legendary effects artist Ray Harryhausen.
Sad fact: in Greek mythology Hercules marries Meg and have children but Hera, Zeus's wife, hated Hercules because Zeus and sex with a mortal woman who have birth to Hercules so Hera takes over his mind and forces him to kill Meg and his children
The Greeks looked for and found hundreds of gods. And it still wasn't enough, so they put up an altar to any unknown gods they might have missed. There's a whole story about that told by a really cool dude named Paul, in this awesome book called Acts.
I seen something on Facebook a while back that said something about how the biggest lie Disney has ever done is make Zeus a happy family man.. you said you used to be into mythology too right? You probably know why that's a big lie that Disney made 😆 still a great movie one of my favorites from childhood and I love your commentary
When I was young, they used to sell the hercules sandels and the cup that Pain and Panic were sporting. Might not have enjoyed the sandels but hey loved the cup.
10:43 this is pretty accurate to the relationship between satyrs and nymphs in Greek mythology. Satyrs were extreme hedonists, they did basically nothing but parties, feasts and sex. Probably why Dionysus liked them so much even though they're technically Pan's people.

In Greek mythology Meg (or her counterpart, his second wife) was Hercules' gay awakening. Bugger left her for a man. Man left Hercules for a woman.
Despite the mythological inaccuracies, this movie is still a lot of fun. Great animation, gospel music and fun characters. Can you react to Dreamworks’ The Bad Guys soon?
I’m terrified of DreamWorks cause they literally keep every one of my videos in a copyright prison 🥺
@@SophieLents makes senses, you do what you want no pressure 😉
19:52 well, the song being played is called Zero to Hero for a reason there
"What have you accomplished? Yup thats what i thought. Having a diploma doesn't count; let's not pretend its useful."
*someone call LifeAlert I've been attacked*
Finally someone who also fell in love with Hades.
Hades is the sassiest villain. Love him
Have you heard the theory that Mother Gothel from Tangled is actually Meg in the future?
This is the video where I first heard of this theory: ruclips.net/video/k-hnYyIVMtY/видео.html
Hercules had multiple wifes too. Though to my knowledge he never had any of them simultaneously like Zeus.
He is a good guy
Lol. He was hypnotized to murder his first wife. He left the second one to go to war with his boytoy. Boytoy left him to join an all female society. Died single.
@@demo2823 as I said, a good man
@@demo2823 His third wife accidentally killed him, actually. She thought the blood of Nessus would make him love her forever, and it kinda... well, it was mixed with the poison of the Hydra that Heracles used to kill the guy.
And then he ascended to Olympus and married the goddess Hebe. @@a.morphous66
James woods makes this movie as Hades one of my all time favorite characters he’s hilarious
That montage of you being a hypocrite at 25:05 made me cackle so hard. Hahahahaha
Fun fact: when Hades says "Relax, it's only half time!" It was the half point of the movie
22:57 That remind you of anyone? Or something said about that familiar face in another movie?
As for Hades, he certainly has a good balance of evil and humor. A villain with personality is always nice. He's my favorite part of this movie.
When I watched ‚Hercules‘ for the first time I had such a big crush on Meg..I just loved her (and I still do) ☺️😂
MEG STANS 😍
Oh, I'm STILL obsessed with Greek Mythology, ever since Elementary School.
25:43 this song turns my reality into a musical every single time, I cannot express my love for it
Hades is the best Disney villain and Meg is iconic af. These are indisputable facts
The Law and Order theme showing up when Nessus appears was perfect!
Hades is very charismatic character
Meg' song is the best.
Fun fact at around 23:00 you can spot scar from the lion king
Sophie can probably make the best puns based on a character from a movie she's watching, because this video was funny!
If you haven't already, watch the music video, Go the Distance by Michael Bolton. That man has nothing short of an angelic voice.
HADES AND MEG ARE THE BEST, you have impeccable taste lmao
Hades is iconic
Disney Zeus: Amazing Father
Actual Zeus: Almost everyone's Father
One of the few movies that are still amazing despite it's massive historical inaccuracies
This was my favorite Disney movie of all time. It even beat out "Great Mouse Detective" and "Sword in the Stone"
Its so witty and funny and remained my fav until Moana......almost 20 years later.
I mean Herc and Meg probebly spent more time together just offscreen bc whole "from zero to hero" was a time passege montage song ^^
Hope you react to more classics like Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
May I suggest watching "Every Mythical Inaccuracy in Disney's Hercules" by "The Mythology Guy" as a follow up?
It's well made, quite fun and very informative.
Hiii ! I just wanted to tell you that I’ve just started probation recently & it’s been a nightmare worrying that I might mess up & get sent to jail & have my life & everything I’ve worked for & love ripped from me.. but recently I’m ve geek watching your videos more & they really take me out of that anxious headspace & calm me down. Never stop pursuing your dreams and making this amazing content ‼️ We love you .
Thank you so much, I’m really glad my videos help
That would be something if the movie was on Hades, but the movie was meant to be Hercules. Hands down for James Woods for being Hades!
Next time you watch a DreamWorks movie, try doing Flushed Away. That one is criminally underrated! 13:10, middle finger again! You go badass!
the amount of both pop culture references and greek references (albeit out of context) easily make it an iconic movie. one of my favorite lines is 'I got plans for august'.
Hades is the second most popular Disney villain. Number one is Maleficent.
I’m sort of river guardianless
I OWN YOU
WHAT ARE……THOSE?!
Name is Hades lord of the dead how you doing
So many great lines by Hades
What a fun reaction so far!
Your new video is a perfect start to my two week break after finishing another semester at my college yesterday and before I go on a three day trip to Las Vegas with my family on Monday!
I hope you have a great time in Vegas Nicholas.
@@rachelkelly2293 I will! Although the only thing I’m dreading is the intolerable heat lol.
@@nicolasbaron4506 Yeah. I don’t blame you. The heatwave. 🥵
Congrats! And have a good time in Vegas ☺️
@@SophieLents Thanks, Sophie! :)
4:59 that line.... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
19:42 another great line 🤨 😆😆😆 🤨
Did you ever wonder what you'd look like in a animated movie, well there you go Meg.
Meg is a better girl power character than EVERY DISNEY PRINCESS PUT TOGETHER
To be fair there was a becoming a hero montage where it’s seems there was at least a few weeks or months of a time jump so I’m sure Meg and Herc had a few more interactions.
I love Hercules 😍
Sorry for double commenting but I wanted to point out that Meg's voice actor also plays a character in a Studio Ghibli movie called Spirited Away if you haven't seen that!
She also voices another character in another Studio Ghibli movie called Porco Rosso
Even tho its not accurate I still love this movie and I completely agree with you Meg is amazing and I also love Hades he's 1 of my top 5 favorite Disney villians, also has anyone told you you could plus off a cosplay of Meg just get contacts for purple eyes, put your hair up in her hairstyle and get a purple tunic dress and there you go 😁
I watched this movie a couple weeks ago and I liked it. I love the voice acting for Hades.
I was so hoping that you discover this movie!
Your my fav RUclipsr i love your videos never stop making them
Thank you 🥺❤️
Sad fact: in Greek mythology Hercules marries Meg and have children but Hera, Zeus's wife, hated Hercules because Zeus and sex with a mortal woman who have birth to Hercules so Hera takes over his mind and forces him to kill Meg and his children
Actual serial killer behavior
I loved this reaction.
James Woods actually had so much fun playing Hades that he went out of his way to voice him in all games and tv shows that were based on this movie
Cue Stefan and Damon going to hades for the cure lmao
I grew up on a Labors of Hercules book that was borrowed from an older boy, that helped me learn to read.
10:43 this is pretty accurate to the relationship between satyrs and nymphs in Greek mythology. Satyrs were extreme hedonists, they did basically nothing but parties, feasts and sex. Probably why Dionysus liked them so much even though they're technically Pan's people.
Greetings Everyone.
Megara in this movie and Hercules are a great example of a woman being born with value and the man working to make himself value. In the end Megara reach the gods because she was the love interes of a Demigod; Great independet woman.
Bliss You All.
