  • It’s a community you may have never heard about, but makes up an estimated 2% of the world’s population. Intersex is an umbrella term for people born with sex traits that fall outside of the traditional conception of male or female bodies. In this week’s Stay Tuned, we’ll talk to actor and activist River Gallo, an intersex person who is shining a light on the community through a feature film.

For people who dont understand intersex, it used to be called Hermaphrodite, , I'm an intersex teen and my oarents chose to have me surgically repaired, in my case it was not difficult, it was a birth defect which a large percentage are, I'm very grateful they made this decision for me, I wouldn't have ever known had they not decided to tell me,, I guess every case is different,,, much love and strength to anyone having a difficult time with it ❤

Hermaphrodite is the term I grew up with. Biology is so fascinating and complex. I love learning how other forms of life reproduce, and when I learned about Clownfish my mind was blown. We're not clownfish. I think with science though one day we'll be able to truly change between the two. I'm all for people living how they want be it as a man, a woman, both or neither, but for now it's a little more binary at least physiologically. People will draw these lines as long as they exist in some form, and warping facts to fit your feelings does more harm than good imo.

I too was born with intersex. It is who I am but the fact is my life has been very difficult to say the least. I’ve had many surgeries and even such advanced cancer I almost died. I look male in many ways but also share many female traits. I do have one testis that works well enough that we were able to produce two children over a fiveteen year period. After the children were born is when the cancer hit me. The cancer took the form of ovarian cancer. My spouse has been supportive she understands that I am both female and male with the male side having been destroyed with the onset of cancer. The female bits also were effected but phycologicaly female is all I have.
Medical community has treated me ok but last summer when I had an appointment for a mammogram the staff escorted me from the hospital because they saw my gender listed as being nonbinary and didn’t wish to treat someone like me.

There really needs to be much more said and taught about this. The world likes to put things in boxes with names and clear boundaries around them but human sexuality is actually on a continuum with many variations and the lack of understanding about this causes a lot of misery. Some people are born hermaphrodite, meaning both male and female, some are born with ambiguous genitalia and you can't know what they are genetically without testing them. This is not the same thing as body dysmorphia where a person is clearly a biological/genetic male or female but identifies as the opposite in their own mind. People need to be allowed to make up their own minds how they want to be identified once they are of age to understand it and make such a decision.

    • @Justthegoodstuff-gh2xx

There are no true hermaphrodite humans. Also "intersex" is a misnomer, there is noone without or between sexes. There is only female and male, we just have to be more open minded about the variation in those categories.
Also this is not correct information, 2% is an overestimating and its putting people in that category when they don't belong there.

Being ultra-feminine male has been magical to say the least. I'm not a flake, probably more of a skeptic, but I picked three Derby winners by twirling my finger like in Dreamcatcher and landing it on a betting sheet. And I was able to make people win at an Internet cafe pretty consistently simply by using the word "win." I got famous for that in a small town. And I won the pIck 4 in FL from a room number I remembered from a lucid dream. And OMG the lucid dreams - all my life!!! Makes me wonder: just how extra is being intersex?
