Wow thanks again for another feature, this was like an early surprise Christmas present for me. Firstly just want to say, was very touched by Blake's story at the beginning - I'm very glad you read that out Simon, this is the sort of thing that makes CTC such a special channel. Not just the puzzles, but the community element too. Blake, thanks for sharing your wonderful poem, and hope Christmas is kind to you. I'm sure everyone's thoughts will be with you.
Simon, another very entertaining solve... I do love the way you talk us through everything you're thinking, and with such wit and humour too. You are like a great mind reader, you always seem to follow my intended paths to the letter, and this was no exception. Every time I was looking at the next step, and then you mention it moments later. Even some of the trickier to spot things, like how green can't connect along the top row because it would cause a clash of 8s.
I admit that the construction of the blue 'even' snake is very close to going into bifurcation in a couple of places... it does require a bit of forward thinking to spot where the clashes will be. However I think it never needs thinking more than 2 or 3 small steps ahead, and there are never more than a couple of options to consider. I found it quite intuitive to be able to rule options out on it quite easily and quickly, and also fun, so I felt it was justifiable. Certain 'rules' helped, such as how you can't have an extreme digit (2 or 8) in the middle of a box on the snake, as it would need its neighbouring digit on both sides. To me, it felt kind of like walking along a twisting path in the dark with a torch, so you can only ever see just the options of where to go just in front of you but, it is just enough to be able to find the way.
The black dots were positioned not just for disambiguation but also to help build that blue snake, and make a few steps a bit easier to prove. All in all, I was quite amazed at how forced it was, from one corner of the grid to the other, with hardly any other clues. The need for it to cling to the box edges limits it immensely.
The yellow snake and green snake were initially just placed so that they 'hemmed in' the ends of the blue snake, forcing it to have to go through the even square clues so that I could do my sneaky break-in.
Once the blue snake was constructed, the hard part of setting this was finding the best arrangement of the other snakes. It was very hard to find a grid that even worked. I knew I didn't want to have any more snakes than were necessary, because I loved the minimal starting grid. For a long time the entire bottom right corner of the grid was completely empty (which I loved), but unfortunately I ended up with a completely resolved grid apart from a 1-3 deadly pattern at the bottom, which could only be disambiguated by adding one more snake in (purple). I didn't mind too much though, because I enjoyed how it had to wiggle rather than connect directly.
I was hoping I'd be able to get a useful difference-3 or difference-4 snake somewhere in there too, but alas it was not to be this time!
Thanks again CTC, I will never stop being hugely appreciative of you featuring any of my puzzles. A very merry Christmas to Simon, Mark, the team of testers, and to anyone still reading this :)

The logic in this was really fun. A big "moment" was noticing that the blue snake had to move like a sine wave, i.e. always move from one extreme to another and would break if it "bounced" in the middle. One of the rare times I spotted things that Simon didn't, lovely puzzle 👏👏👏

Thank you so much for sharing Blake’s story. As they say I didn’t have the spoons to watch yesterday when the video dropped. I have a genetic neurological disorder that takes a lot out of me, and like Blake these videos help so much. They keep my mind off of what I go through, if even just for a an hour. It means the world to see these regular uploads, and to get lost in a world of numbers and logic. I am so sorry for Blake’s loss I’m not sure what I’d do if I lost support like that. Stay strong! I connected with Blake’s story in so many ways. Thanks again.

My favorite thing about this channel is not the puzzles. Not the inside jokes. It's not the occasional math. Not the sense of accomplishment from defeating a challenge that you expect to be above your capabilities (although I'm a huge fan of ALL of that). It's the kindness... on this channel, you and Mark demonstrate the rules every time to make sure it's welcoming to newcomers. You never swear, so it's welcoming to children. You LISTEN to your fan base and make sure you are doing things they will enjoy as well. Not just things YOU will enjoy. You even stream puzzle video games, wordle, and cryptic crosswords in order to give a variety of content for those who may not enjoy sudoku but still love puzzles. On top of making your patreon not only very affordable, and therefore accessible, but entirely worth the money. You have made this channel a safe place. Safe from judgment. Safe from hate. Safe from anger. Safe from shame. Safe for people to be who they are. To the point that (it seems) you get regular emails from people like the one today who talk about how this channel has changed their lives. Or at least greatly impacted it in a positive way. This channel has grown bigger than you or Mark, or any one viewer. This channel has even grown beyond just a puzzling community. It has grown into its own entity. This channel has become a legacy of kindness and hope for humanity. While I haven't struggled as much as some of the stories you have received, this channel has even impacted MY life in a positive way. I've fallen asleep many times to Simon's soothing voice after struggling to sleep. I have watched these videos to ease my anxiety. I have bonded over puzzles with a long-time friend who has been watching for ages, and I didn't know until recently. I have had bad days at work or felt down and come to youtube to watch the latest videos because I KNEW that they would help me through it. This channel has become something just shy of a miracle. I know Simon has a wish to reach 1 million subscribers. Frankly, that's not enough. I think the entire world needs a little bit of Simon and Mark positivity in their lives. If they had that... this world would be a much better and a much happier place. Thank you guys very much.. for creating something so incredibly special.

Lovely puzzle. I'm a little surprised that Simon found it quite so tricky to see how the blue snake moved once he'd set up the ends - only because, it felt very much like a german whisper line in terms of 2 and 8 being 'monogamous' (only having one partner), so if you put a 2 or an 8 on it, you immediately have to turn a corner, which feels like very familiar logic for this channel!

I'll admit I would not have found that break in for a long long time. However.... Once Simon pointed out the blue snake was even digits, that snake fell apart in less than five minutes of work. It's very easy to see in column 8 of box 3, the digits are 8642, with 2 being in top of box 6. It takes very little work to convince yourself that in column 7 of box 6, the digits are 468 top to bottom. So now we have ROPING! Column 9 of box 9 is a 468.
Now go to box 7. The even digits only have one way out, and it forces an 8 over in row 9 of box 9. Then the 46 in box 9 get resolved with more work on the snake. The black dot in box 5 is a 12. And that resolves how the snake finishes between box 5 and 8.
Then it on to the green snake. A big beautiful 6 is placed in box 2, and you can convince yourself in 10 seconds that the green snake cannot take that 6. Anyway - sometimes just using the boot is a quicker way to kill the spider than building a laser beam. Use the boot.

Hearing Blake's message was heartbreaking. I know I'm coming to this video late, but it is comforting to know that Blake has found some solace through this channel. I hope he his doing well these days. I finished in 83:37 minutes. This was an incredibly fun puzzle to solve. I was worried that the rules were too loose for me to get a grip, but thinking about the blue line and parity gave a wealth of information. I was so happy when I was able to put that in. Then, the green line was fun to do and I was able to rule the ones difference by the clutch 8 that was placed in r8c3. From there, I saw that a 2 was forced in the orange that had to dip behind the green and I was able to play parity with that. If the starting was odd, then a 2 is forced into r6c3 and the pathway of orange would be a ones difference. This forces it to take a path straight down column 2 of box 1, which allows no option for 2 in box 1. That was so cool to see. I finished pretty swiftly after that and even enjoyed the purple snake, which I thought was going to be useless. Great Puzzle!

Even though it doesn't make any difference to the final solve, pretty sure there's a logic mistake right at the very beginning (15:15). The case where the yellow line heads up to row 1 and goes _above_ the top orange dot wasn't considered (as to why the top yellow dot was deteremined to have to move downwards).

42:25 finish. I guessed that the green line would go where it did, right from the beginning. It was only halfway through the puzzle that I second guessed myself and worked on fitting it the other way. I decided not to parity shade this one, instead coloring individual snake cells with black for anything off the snakes. Fortunately I did not need to use parity much once I finished the blue snake, as I just pencil marked instead of shading. A very fun puzzle, excellent!

55:43, wasn't too bad considering half my work was done half awake in the morning. Two things that helped me a lot: seeing that the parity on the lines would have to be all odd, all even, or jumping back and forth, and remembering that it didn't matter what path one would take, the party of the cell in the line would not change. The rest was just playing with the numbers (oh, this is difference is too big, of there's not enough digits to continue this line in this box, etc)

Hi Simon. Forgive me if I’ve missed something but I don’t suppose you ever continued with the CTC based game ‘The Sudoku Gourmet’ at all? I’ve been catching up with the videos (yes, I really am that mad as to try and keep up with them and solve the puzzles) so only came across it fairly recently, however I seem to recall there being a request for you to do a stream of playing the game (which I can confirm is thoroughly entertaining) but I’m not too sure if it actually happened. If not, maybe you could consider it as an option for your next stream effort. Really enjoyed the last part of Chants Of Sennaar by the way and apologies for my possibly underestimating the game length/over-enthusiasm for you to finish. Many thanks as always for all the work that yourself and Mark do. Pi Guy. :)

Finished in 87:00. Man, I messed up with the green and orange snakes in the beginning and that had me tearing out my hair trying to figure out how the blue could possibly be a 1 difference snake with the parities being off. After about 40 minutes, I decided to go with the blue snake being a difference of 2 and working from there and then realizing the orange snake had to be the one on the outside instead of the green. And it was the differences on the snakes which turned out to be key to everything instead of trying to figure out difference amounts.
    Great puzzle!

I think the difference between 3 star difficulty and 5 star difficulty is your inclination to start brute forcing your way down the snakes... you take snake logic 1 or 2 steps maybe 3 before you stop searching. But if you stick with it you find that the snakes are incredibly forced and there aren't as many possibilities as you think... solvers at Simon's level aren't inclined to pursue random crap theoretical lines because their brain is trained to computate the position with certainty. Solvers with less skill are more inclined to explore dead end thought trains
Simon 54:12 [We go "4 6 8 6" then we can go left with 4 or down with 8 or 4... it could be anything I'm erasing these pencil marks so they don't confuse me]
Continued (down 8): after down with 8, next is 6 which can't be placed in box 8 or 9... it's not down 8... the next digit must be a 4...
Continued (down 4): after down 4 it's 6 or 2... if we went right into box 9 then 6 can't go into box 9 but 2 can but after 2 wed be stuck because we can't place 4... the snake must remain in box 8... 6 can't be placed in box 8 so we must be looking at the down 4 then a 2... after which must be a 4 again... which we can't place in box 8 anymore so it could only go up returning to box 5... then left for a 2 in box 5 since we can't place 6... then wed have to go down... meaning we are trying to put a 4 into box 8 at r7c4 no matter what path we take which we can't do if we put 4 in box 8 at r7c6... it's not down 4 from the Beginning r7c6...
Continued (left 4): the only possibility left... place 4 into r6c5
It's not difficult logic, it just needs someone willing to sit and "waste their time" by trying to calculate how many possibilities there are... cause while my comment calulated 3-5 steps into the future there were only 4 possible combinations to rule out
    8 6 broke (down right)
4 2 4 with box 9 broke (down right down)
4 2 4 with box 8 broke (down down left) (down left down) or (down left left)
    4 2 4 2 4 broke (down left up left down)
    Therefore down isn't correct...

Yes he mentioned a bit earlier that the blue snake can't go to the left because it wouldn't be able to reach the other blue spot without cutting off green or orange. Green and orange, because two of their spots touch eachother, together form a sort of wall that blue can't get through.

Can someone explain how what hes talking about at the 22 minute mark makes any sense? Why cant the blue line differ by 1? Also if the blue line went left twice and then up it would break the polarity of the "bishop" diagonal wouldnt it?

    • @martysears
      @martysears 10 месяцев назад +1

If the snake had a difference of 1, then if you checkered the grid like a chess board, the even digits would always be on squares of the same colour, because every 2 orthogonal moves takes you back to the same chess board colour as well as back to the same parity.
Because the “even” grey square clues in the top right and bottom left (that he knows the snake must pass through) are on different chess board colours, it means that a ‘difference of 1’ snake can’t work, because a ‘difference of 1’ snake would have any even digits on the same chess board colour

20 seconds of cracking and Simon's cracked! His very first bit of reasoning in this video is flawed. To fully explain the higher yellow dot not going up you have to consider looping it above the higher orange dot, which doesn't work because then coming down the line would separate the green dots. It's unclear whether Simon has actually considered this from the video, but it's (uncharacteristically) remiss of him not to mention the possibility if he had. As is so often the case wording like "it is clear" and "obviously" once again proves a good signal to us that there may be a flawed or lacking bit of reasoning. Does anyone know if this is the earliest "mistake" in a Simon solve that's featured on the channel? And only Simon knows what horrors lurk in the unpublished/failed videos section of his private collection.
