Christmas hasn't been super kind this year, so hearing Simon's gentle and familiar voice wish me a Merry Christmas just...broke me down. I love you guys
I don't want to sound like a cheap fortune cookie, but I'm sure whatever has you down right know will get by and your next Christmas will be better. From one Sudoku and CTC fan to another, Merry Christmas.
I'm not surprised the last two pentominoes turned out to be a V-N pair rather than an I-L pair. After all, a Christmas-themed pentomino sudoku should have "no L"!
Simon! Merry Christmas to you and all your family. Thanks so much for doing this puzzle, and tolerating some new -omino terminology. You are not just a great solver, you're a great teacher - explaining to your audience why 5 consecutive digits add to a multiple of 5 and so on. I hope you have a wonderful holiday and new year!
Love how Simon explained how to calculate the sum of a 5 cell renban and then immediately didn't use the opposite of that to figure out the digits for a 30 sum renban
Deer me, what a wonderful tree, With dots colored so beautif'ly. As renbans wrap 'round and the whispers abound Such a puzzle just fills me with glee! (Leaves a pile of small, soft, brown objects) ...What? I baked brownies. Hope you enjoyed all the imaginary gifts. I go back to being an otter next month, so unless you like fish, I'll just be leaving limericks.
I am watching today! No family around except my Swedish husband, whose tradition is to celebrate on Christmas Eve. Love it when you say, Now I get to play! Happy Boxing Day.
That finish was incredible. I hope I didn't get you in trouble with your family 😲 I know there was some tension and suspense in the midgame, but thanks for fighting through it!
🌲thank you ...such a pretty , appropriate puzzle...(including a festive 3 in the corner 🎉)....all the best from the spectator-sport corner ✨ happy setting 🧩
Merry Christmas, Simon, Mark, your families, and the CTC family. Of course we make time for a little cryptic cracking today - it’s a peaceful little escape from the hustle and bustle of the day!
I finished in 57:45 minutes. This was such a cute idea for a puzzle that had a great pathway. The ornaments were placed in such cool and restricting ways. I think my favorite part was midway through the puzzle, pencil marking the thermos that always had an 8 in the middle and a 9 on the top, which forced r1c5 to be an 8. I had a really fun time working through the pentominoes. Great Puzzle!
When you say the you expect that no one will watch this video today, I think, perhaps, that you've forgotten that there are a great many of us in the world who do not celebrate Christmas. And, for those who don't celebrate it and live in heavily Christian countries, it is, in fact, one of the emptiest days of the year. So, thank you for posting nonetheless; and, I hope you've had a wonderful Christmas.
We did a secret santa at work, spend anything between £5 and £10 pounds, nice bit of fun. I got a 150 sudoku book and a 200 times codebreaker book. 🎉 I think that is a great gift, there is a pack of highlighters so i can colour too 😂😂. I picked out one of the chefs.. that particular individual loves tea so i got a few boxes of teabags, some biscuits, some after eight mints. It felt it wasnt quite enough so i added a bottle of san miguel 😂. Fun times.
Bet whatever you made turned out delicious and that you had a wonderful day with family/friends. Merry Christmas my friend and I would gladly help you clean up. 💙💚
The only reason I’m a bit late in watching, is that I was captivated by the Kickstarter :) Beautiful story, beautiful Sudokus! Sandra (& Nala) really did an amazing job!
The black lines that Simon added to delineate the pentominoes officially broke my brain. I had to really think to distinguish them from the standard black box boundary lines.
At exactly 32 minutes, Simon solves a pentomino. But in classic Simon fashion, he ignores that he solved it and tacitly flexes by showing a different way why there can't be a 6.
Finished in 56:46. Got stuck for about 20 minutes because I didn't remember the rule about unique pentaminos and was stuck with where the 4 could be in the lower left renbanmino..... Fun puzzle!
37 here. Scrolled to find this. The shame at my immaturity grew the further I scrolled, until here. So thank you for your comment - I now feel less alone in my childishness!
You're part of my day at least 5 days a week. I listen as I work. hahaha... yeah, I listen to some guy solve sudoku as I work. I'm all sorts of fun! (Love your videos, btw)
A request from a CTC fan all the way in the midwestern-US - we call the "P" pentomino a "Utah", as it resembles my home state. If we get a similar puzzle in the future, I'd be delighted to hear that instead!
If you start by counting the green region you can find out it must be made up of 9 pentominoes, and since there are 8 red/green clues, no like colors are within five cells of each other, and pentominoes cannot be both types that means there's only one unclued pentomino. Even better, you can roughly place that single unclued pent since r9c9 cannot reach any r/g clues, which means any other region must take a clue. This is very helpful since it adds the constraint when figuring pentominoes since outside that bottom right area every one must take a clue (for instance, at 12:09 you can finish the blue-line pentomino since it only has one clue available to it)...
Merry Christmas! Hope you got some real good puzzles for Christmas! My grandparents got me a puzzle table. It's for jigsaws as I do those more than sudoku. Anyway have a wonderful 2024!!
I'm watching. Been up since 5:45 when dear husband spilled a huge bowl of grits and eggs on the floor, decided to get down on the floor to clean it up, and couldn't get himself up off the floor. Merry Christmas??
I can top this. This morning at 6 am my 4 year old vomited in our bed. Great way to wake up. Luckily he's getting better and we have a washing machine... 😅
101:56, that certainly took me some time. I was stuck mostly looking at the remaining two cages in the bottom right of the grid, struggling to figure out which way they are set up.
Not watch the video today? I've had my great day. Kids and wife are now in bed. Got Forrest Gump on in the background. Simon is front and centre. Merry Christmas, Team CTC x
16:50 the red dot at the bottom *must* be part of the domino starting at the silver dot, either there would be one pentomino too much (there are nine in all).
8:20: "And the answer to that, I think, is going to be No". Indeed. A renban of five (or more) digits always needs to contain a 5. Whether you try to minimise it: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or maximise it: 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, you'll always have a 5 in there. Obviously, the same applies if you use a more "middly" renban. At the same time, though, a 5 can *never* be part of a German whispers, since the closest things that are five apart from 5 are 0 and 10, neither of which are valid sudoku digits. And since 5 can't at the same time be in a cage and not in a cage, no cage can be a renban *and* a German whispers cage. More interestingly though (at least imo) is r2c6. Which does, in fact, need to connect to the green bauble at the top, since the white dot indicates that it isn't in the same pentomino as r3c6. And since that connection already requires three cells, there aren't enough cells left to even reach the red bauble on the left.
I tried hard to make the blue thingy thing (the N in box 9) some kind of special omino, but all my attempts broke the puzzle... it also has a total of 31, but it was too far away from the 30s and 31s to make it connect. Pentominoes can be picky sometimes.
Drawing black boxes around the pentominoes was kind of hard to follow with the normal sudoku boxes being black. Either Grey lines around them, or colored pentominoes would be easier to follow in the future. Thanks for all of your videos!
Yeah, well, in my country Christmas isn't even an actual holiday, so sure I'll watch the video! Oh, and this puzzle was a tough one for me, spend a whole hour on it, because I was somehow constantly confusing myself, thinking that 8 and 9 must go with a 3 or 4 on the whisper. Don't know why, some strange brain malfunction, lol x)
Not too difficult although I did get stuck halfway through the puzzle. Once I was able to finally determine the last two pentominos it was smooth sailing to the finish. (81:40 for me)
Hi if anyone can help me please do, but I don’t know how Simon deduced why the total of the C pentominoe could only be 20 or 30, why could it not of been 15 and how/why the total of the cross pentominoe was able to tell him this. Merry Christmas 🎄
The central digit of the cross pentomino (which includes a green bauble, so obeyed German whisper rules) had to be an extreme digit (1 or 9) to allow the four different digits adjacent to it to all be at least 5 different. It was either 1 surrounded by 6789 (sum = 31) or 9 surrounded by 1234 (sum = 19). The white dot between this pentomino and the U pentomino below it told us the total of the U pentomino differed by one from the X pentomino. It also had to be divisible by 5, so it had to be either 20 (one away from 19) or 30 (one away from 31).
I honestly think the rules weren't written that well. I thought adjacent included the diagonally adjacent cells as well. Also the puzzle assumes normal sudoku rules apply, it doesn't specify it though.
If adjacency included diagonals, then the only pentomino shape you could have had as a Germanimo would have been an I pentomino. Easy to see that wouldn't work.
40:13 for me. wasted at least 10 minutes on pentomino layout that was correct by the rules but the numbers did not fit in once i started filling in. otherwise i am happy. i am crap at filomino sudoku.
At the 32min mark, when working out the pink digits. I still don't understand why you cant have 9, 9, 8, 3, 1 as your digits to make 30. Or even 8, 8, 9, 3, 2 Am i missing something here? This is where i got up to in this puzzle.
"I'm pretty sure no one will watch the video today" Where I am it's already the 26th and we don't celebrate Christmas anyway (I'm not Christian) but Merry Christmas to anyone who does celebrate it ✨
Simon, you're kind of family at this point, so here we are, watching your video. Merry Christmas :)
