Had an aunt in New Mexico teach me this. Did it 15 years later. Candles. Breathing and calmness are important. I felt “something” touch my right forearm. After that I knew they were always around us. They leave little markers on the road to guide you and let you know they’re there. You can ask them anything. They come in dreams too. Listen to your dreams. Write them down. Look for the signs. You’re gonna be okay.

Sterlin Harjo cannot receive enough commendation for this show. FX execs wanted the show to be shot in NM, not OK, but he refused to accommodate that. He told them he could produce a show to be set in NM, but it wouldn’t be Rez Dogs. As indigenous stories, the land is a large enough part of the story as to be almost another character. It’s his uncompromising vision and talent that makes Rez Dogs what it is, and that’s not at all to take away from the enormously talented cast, crew, and writers. I’m a white woman living on Mvskoke land not far from where most of the scenes are shot. I really hope and expect that Rez Dogs leads a cultural revolution of more and more marginalized people having the resources they need to share their stories with the wider audiences, without compromise to the established status quo of the entertainment industry. I’m so grateful that Sterlin Harjo became friends with Taika Waititi in the times that we have streaming services in addition to traditional broadcast TV. Rez Dogs couldn’t have happened with the old TV execs. 🪶

I have been telling my son since he was able to talk that his ancestors have his back. Every morning when I dropped him at daycare I would tell him that. They are always around. When I took him to his first powwow this summer, I saw him have this moment. I saw him with his eyes tightly closed during grand entry. When he opened them, they were welling up with tears. He looked at me and gave me the hardest hug he ever had. Made me cry too. It was beautiful. Just five years old and he felt the power of the universe wash over him. Never ever ever will I forget it.

I hate that I found this show late because i smashed all the episodes in just a few days and then I found out season 3 is the last season :-(

It’s wild how all of our ancestors are protecting each and everyone of us. No matter how bad things turn out, we’re never alone 🎉

This scene alone is by far the best scene so far. Willie feeling the spirit brought up my own experiences during my religion journey. This episode was the only one that made me cry when the rest made me laugh.
