- This video is a compilation of the previous 4 videos in my W210 series of A/C component replacements. The video shows from the beginning to the end how to replace the following: AC Compressor, AC Expansion Valve, AC lines, and AC Receiver Drier. It also shows how to charge your system with fresh Freon. This job can easily cost $2,000 plus in the U.S.

If you cannot afford the MB brand compressor, don't worry. There are two solid third party brands with very good reputation. Denso and Nissens.

You need to add 4.05 ounces (120 cubic centimeters) of compressor oil (PAG 46) to the compressor unless it comes prefilled with oil. Even then, if you are not sure it comes with PAG 46, drain it and replace it with PAG 46.
Keep in mind, compressor oils are mostly hygroscopic and absorb the moisture from the air. Moisture kills A/C systems. Therefore, minimize the amount of time your oil bottle is open, the compressor is open if prefilled with oil, or if any port to your A/C system is open for longer than a few minutes.

It is always a good idea to replace the two rubber gaskets at the tip of the two pressure lines connecting the Expansion Valve and the Condenser to the Compressor. Depending on when you last replaced the gaskets, consider replacing them. You can remove the two old gaskets and try to find matching gaskets at an auto parts store or buy the following packages:

I used the Hansa Receiver Drier model but the cheapest Receiver Drier as of October, 2019, is the Rein model which is much better than Rein and can be found at FCPEuro.com for $13.00:

If you live in the U.S., you can borrow both tools you will need for this job - A/C Manifold Gauge and Vacuum Pump - from most franchised Auto Parts stores. You can also purchase them from the following links.

Just finished my complete AC replacement. Took about six hours, which included filling AC. Works great now. Suggestion to anyone doing these repairs; when you replace each part, do a vacuum check before you change out the next part. This way you verify each part doesn't have a leak. If you replaced all three, then do a vacuum check, then find a leak, you will have to figure out where your leak is. And when you have all the plastic out, give it a good clean. Airflow has increased greatly by cleaning all the plastics. Thank you for the great video.
Great suggestions, Dave. Thx.
Wonderful suggestions
Thank you Masood. This is an exceptional video, rich in information. Much appreciated.
Hi M Wolf and thanks.
An outstandingly detailed video for those who have a bit of mechanical know how. The details and explanations go way beyond anything I've seen on Y.T. My 1998 C230 with 410382 km has an excellent working air conditioner. The compressor is beginning to get a bit noisy, and I have been nursing it along with an occasional evacuation, flush, and recharge. But it's just a matter of time before I'll be performing this complete service.
Yes, the car is old, but it's in excellent shape, has been well maintained by me, and has been a most reliable car that is still exciting to drive. My other car is a boring 2019 Subaru Legacy which I seldom drive, has only 16,000 km on the odometer.
Hi nomebear, thank you very much for the kind words.
First class video. From excellent content, to video quality, and music choice also.
Thanks much, DiDi KAL.
Masood: I completed this same job yesterday in around 8 hours (new compressor, expansion valve, and receiver/drier) on my '03 CLK 320. Your video identified some tools I needed before I decided to tackle the job. (Torque wrenches, extensions, wobble & universal joint adapters, etc.). I replaced the expansion valve first - and found this to be the most difficult & time consuming part of the job. I'm glad I changed the $20 expansion valve, because after pulling it out I found the internal spool rod was coated with a white substance. Besides the high and low side hoses, the compressor is very similar to an alternator job with the exception of having to do some work from below. On my CLK, it was easier to remove & replace the compressor from the bottom. I have HVACR experience, so the refrigerant evacuation and charge was typical - but your suggestions are spot on. I want to thank you for publishing your steps. This video gave me the motivation to order $250 in parts, another $100 or so in tools I didn't have, and the knowledge to know exactly where to go to rebuild my CLK's refrigerant circuit. Thank you!
You are very welcome, Martin, and thanks for the nice comments.
Great job to both of you great DIY guys.
It's too hot in East Texas to go w/o AC on our 2000 w210 wagon - so REALLY appreciate you showing all this.
I'll downoad to my tablet to follow in the shop.
What parts did you order for $250? Does these include the compressor?
@@o.b.aoyinloye2591 Yes - I ordered a new compressor, expansion valve, and receiver/drier on Amazon for about $250 total. Heed Masood's warning on making sure your replacement compressor has 4oz of PAG 46 oil. My Denso 4711293 (I paid $180 - it's about $220 now) came with only minimal oil - maybe a single ounce! I drained it all and poured in 4 oz of PAG 46 ($10 for a 8 oz bottle). The expansion valve was only $15 (It's about $20 now) and the receiver/dryer another $20. My AC has ran very cool all summer long. Take your time, give the compressor a chance to kick in while charging refrigerant, and you'll be fine.
fantastic..cristal clear and simple explanation...good job bro..
Thank you, my brother.
Excellent instructions, the best I've ever seen !
I just did an a/c repair on my friends turbo diesel FYI i highly recommend washing and degreasing the entire engine bay before working on it , those diesels get very dirty overtime lol.😅
Great video, now I have my next weekend project. Thank you. I suspected the expansion valve, you made a good point about changing the receiver/drier. I would have not replaced it, but after your video, definitely replacing it also.
Yes, that is a must and an oft neglected part to replace.
Hello.. Great video. . My compressor is out of refrigerant. I want to bypass the pressure sensor so that I can get the compressor running long enough to recharge it. Hope someone sees this. Thanks
The DETAILS make the difference.. thanx Masood
Thank you, Abdulaziz Akh.
Very detailed video. Thanks a lot. I have a question. When you vacuum pump, pac oil is not coming out? Only air and moisture? If so when you replace new ac compressor you put pac oil. But oil already exists in the system. So how do you know how much oil is in the system? 4 ounce you put plus existing oil? It is more than we want. Can you explain? Thanks.
And when you get chance can you make condenser replacement video?
Hi Joe, WIS documents specific oil replacement volumes for each of the AC component changes...usually within 10 to 20cm3.
I have trouble my car 420 e ac one side not working
Great video. Watched twice already. My 2000 E320's a/c isn't working. I'm a novice tinkerer but think I could do this job based on your video. I'm not sure where the problem is with my a/c. I think the compressor is working. Should I get a code reader to try to narrow it down or is this a waste of time? If a waste of time, should I just go ahead and replace expansion value, compressor, and receiver/drier then recharge?
thank you for the great video. excellent work, keep it up please. how is denso for receiver/drier?
Thanks, Ali. It is perfect.
My 2000 Mercedes C-230 Kompressor has a couple of fuel lines running into a round thing on the low-pressure side. I guess it chills the fuel down before it hits the fuel rail is this right?
Hi Jay, no, I think that may be your fuel pressure regulator.
How do you reset the A/C control after the refilling with new R-134a in order to turn the A/C on?
@@somsaksakmanalit7614 there is no reset procedure...
Awesome video. Awesome channel. Thank you so much.
My AC system only blows cold air. To get hot air, I have to set it on HI. If I set 32°C (just below HI) I get cold air again. Any idea of what's happening?
Hi Montyesp, thx for the kind comments. The AC system is complicated. It could be a number of things including low coolant levels, a bad heater core, or a bad thermostat. It you live in the US, see if a franchised auto repair shop can diagnose it for a few bucks...
You have to press ec bottom on if you want hot air and turn the level to hi
Hi, i have a clk w208. The compressor comes on for 5 seconds then turns off for 20 seconds ish. What could be my issue?
Hi, could be a number of things. Start by reading the pressures.
About evaporator:I have a leak and cannot find from where. How can you know if it is from the evaporator?
Look for videos on how to add a dye to the system and then to look for leaks with special glasses.
THanks
You are welcome and than you.
My car is 1996 w210 e290 in the US, with ac on, compressor not turning on (spins freely), not blowing cold at all...thinking about replacing condenser, drier, accumulator valve and compressor all at once. Is there a way to turn on the compressor so the system can be filled with freon? (Can 1996 e300td to buy ac parts to fix my ac or what US mercedes model is equivalent to my car?)
Hi Elvis - perhaps I am not understanding exactly what you are asking. If you plan to replace the compressor along with other AC components, why do you want to turn on the old compressor?
@@masood-tv Hi Masood, it's not leaking, for now would like to try use the old compressor to diagnose and to save money, hopefully there is a bad expansion valve, pressure switch, ac clutch or ac relay or something else that's easy to figure out.
I get it. You will need a diagram to step back from the compressor all the way to the battery in order to find the breakage in either power or ground. Alternatively, you can supply power and ground directly to the compressor to see if it switches on - bypassing everything else....
Mr. Masood, I got a 1998 e320 like yours. When the car reaches over 80’, I hear a winding noise from either transmission or engine. As I turn it of and on it goes away but it comes back. Can you tell me what is going on?
Hi Massoud, it is hard to tell without seeing the car, but I would check the condition of the drive belt, pulleys, and even the wheel bearings....
@@masood-tv Mr. Masood, can it be the transmission? or TCM? I also drive the car with W (the knob on the transmission W or S). When the knob is on S The car has a jolt to go to second gear, I was told it might be the MAS sensor). Please let me know what you think,
@Massoud Zadeh I really cannot tell and don't want to speculate. Thank you.
Can you post the FCP part numbers? The links are no longer valid. Thanks!
Sorry, I don't have the current part numbers, but if you visit their site and enter the year and model of your car, you can get the correct part numbers.
I'm finally going to do this myself and just ordered the parts. My compressor leaks from the seals of the compressor and recently discharged and has stopped blowing cold air. I assume that when I take it out, the remaining oil, if any, will not be the specified amount. Any recommendations? Should I just leave the pre oiled amount in the new Denso compressor?
You can or do as I did in the video and replace it
Love ur video,
Pls I want to knw if u flush the system. Eveporator, condenser and the hoses?
And what chemicals do u use to flush out dirty. Pls reply.
Hi Babatunde, thanks. It is a good idea to fluid flush it. I only flushed it with pressurized air. You can use any AC flush chemical.
Great vid..quest after having my ac running for a while when I park I noticed a huge puddle of water leaking under the car, it’s not from any of my radiator lines, only reg water..would this be a sign of something broken or going bad ? Thx again
Hi Nick - thanks. Are you sure it is not the condensate (from the AC system) which is normal?
Masood thanks for the terrific videos. I have a problem with my A/C cooling. Blowing warm air. The climate controller diagnostics Is saying 0 pressure(#7 diagnostic) for A/C coolant pressure. Would you know if this reading is for the Hi or Low side?
Thanks, Jim. I am not sure what that indicates. But, I suggest you take it to a franchised shop that will give you a free diagnosis. Then, you will know exactly what is wrong or what parts to replace. Alternatively, purchase the guage in my video from Amazon and check the pressure yourself. You will get a good idea if what is causing it
Thanks for the video. I got a question on my W210 AC problem. While starting the engine, it's look normal for first 2 minute. After that, the central vent almost no air flow but the both side vent looks normal. Driving for a while say 20 mins, the wind shield start foggy because the AC keeps blowing along the defrost vent. Do you know the reason behind? No matter how I adjust the vent direction, the central vent keep no air flow. What I can do is to turn the AC at low speed level and this can reduce the foggy impact.
Hi G Bush, it is hard to tell without properly testing your system. It may be that your compressor is going bad. Take your car somewhere for a free diagnosis to find out exactly what is wrong. A lot of shops would charge you little to nothing for a diagnosis.
Great video, definitely more to fixing the A/C than just replacing the compressor. A few questions, what is the torque on the evaporator nuts? and then how do you prevent air from getting into the yellow line when changing refrigerant bottles? stop the car, close manifold (blue) knob, disconnect bottle, bleed yellow line, i.e., similar as to when initially connecting the first bottle? Do you need to replace the condenser (looks like a radiator to me)? Did you use the TFE paste just on the dryer connections or also the compressor as well? Other than replacing the new oil that came with the compressor, did you flush any of the other items? Lots of ?'s I know, sorry. Thanks in advance.
Hi Bob, yes, it is quite involved and intimidating at first. But, if you follow the procedure, it is really not that big of a deal. I have mentioned the torque value in the video for the evap nuts. It is 8NM. You don't prevent air from getting into the yellow line when switching cans. I detail it out starting at 30:00 minutes into the video. Basically, you close the blue knob, replace the empty can with a full one, release the trapped air and some small volume of Freon from yellow line at the gauge ...I am sort of agreeing with what you stated in your question. You should replace the radiator looking condenser if you fear that debris have made their way into it or if it cannot do its job anymore. There are ways to test if your condenser is good or bad which are beyond the scope of this video. If you are replacing your compressor, evaporator, and reciever/drier, AND, you have over 100K miles on the car, I would recommend you should if you can afford it (not very expensive either)... I did air flush the lines. You can and probably should liquid flush the system. I didn't because I didn't have the time. It is tremendously rewarding at the end when you restore your air conditioning system at a fraction of the cost of what any shop would charge. Benz dealerships would charge you even more.
@@masood-tv Thanks again for the video and prompt response to my questions. Next project A/C, then EGR valve replacement. You have a video for that?
@@bobsilk8397 You are most welcome. No, I don't. Sorry.
I been watching this video multiple times but trying to find what part when do you open the high pressure (red)during charging reaching at 20 on blue gauge? Or open it at the same time of blue?

شكرا لك.. كم كمية زيت دورة تكييف مرسيدس w210؟
You're welcome. You will need an 8 ounce bottle of PAG 46 oil and use as much as needed per the procedure I show in the video to fill the compressor. I didn't measure exactly how much I used, unfortunately. Sorry.
Great Video Masood. Where can I buy the hex screws for the expansion valve?
Hi Cuauhtermoc, thank you. You should be able to get them from your local MB dealer.
I have a 2001 e320 i replaced the compressor but the ac clutch doesnt engage. Do you know what it could be?
Hi Martin, check the relay please.
good information and good detail video. kudos for you. Where did you buy your workshop manual you mention?
Thank you jojo. You can purchase a manual for your Benz model for less than $20 from www.emanualonline.com/cars/mercedes.htm.
@@masood-tv you’re welcome is this workshop manual? I don’t need a owners manual though.
Thanks anyway Sir!!!!
@@Jojo51058 Yes, they are workshop manuals. There are some sample pages you can view once you find your car model.
After replacing the compressor and dryer is it ok to drive the car to a shop for charging?
Absolutely.
What made you change the expansion valve ie what let you know it was bad and needed changing?
Hi MrNebRebew - on this specific car, the compressor was failing and replacing the expansion value - a very cheap part - was the logical thing to do at the same time as replacing the compressor and the receiver/drier.

Do you have a video for fixing why center vent not blowing any air in same car please
Hi Samed. No, I don't. But, try pressing the two knobs on each side (one driver and the other for the passenger) and play with the settings. Also, consult your owner's manual. If you don't have a copy, let me know and I will post a link to one.
I experience the same situation, do you know why?
Do I need to change expansion?
It depends on the symptoms and also age of the valve.

You fill oil first, then why add oil again with the machine?
Hi Burak - I don't fill oil again. With the machine, I vacuum the moisture and air out of the system. With the manifold, I add r134a to the system.
