    This scene devastated me in the best way when it first came out.
    I have seasonal depression, have had since I was 11, and wasn't diagnosed until I was 20. When I was got a job after college with health insurance, I made a doctor's appointment for it, and I spent the whole drive there convincing myself that I wasn't sick enough, the doctor wasn't going to believe me or do anything to help. Five minutes into the appointment, he told me he totally agreed with me that it was time to try medication and get me some relief, after twelve years of dealing with it alone. That was the same year I watched M & M for the first time.
    That moment when Stitchknit tells Evan its an outpatient procedure and they can resolve his problem and Evan just puts his face in his hands, it was such a visceral representation of how I felt in that moment. I love DND, I love this show, I love Aabria and Brennan, for this moment and many others.

    I grew up in theatre. I'm a stage manager, I come from a family of actors and directors, my whole life and perspective is informed by the art of acting... This is some of the most beautiful and skillful work I've seen in a long time. He does the thing - where it's complex and simple at the same time because he drops all the trappings of artifice and gives you something gut-level True, but true in all the ways that a complex human is, so there are all the layers of overlapping thoughts and impulses - expressed or suppressed, felt or unconscious - but there's no business or mess because the Person is one, clear, real human. To keep it brief, Brennan’s character, Evan Kelmp, is Tom Riddle if he hated being evil. He has the dark, self-aware shadow, the wizard nazi fans, the sentient and aggressive blood, and he hates all of it. He was homeless in Iowa and didn’t have any money or friends, so coming to the wizard school with Sam, Dream, and Jabber is the first real experience he has with belonging somewhere, interacting with people that like him, and having a home.
      He wants to get rid of his evil magic at any cost because he *hates* how much danger it puts his only friends in, and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to keep them safe, even at the cost of losing all his memories of both them and magic, because he loves them too much to risk their safety just to keep them around

    okay this has been bugging me for a long time but *SPOILER* this scene is super confusing in light of the ending?
    Like the implication is that Evan would have to leave because being “no longer magic” would remove both the demon/shadow thing and his capacity to cast spells, but later they make it sound like the spell part is just a human thing and everyone (in the wizard world) already knows that so why couldn’t they just pull the demon out?

    • @sugarqbs
      @sugarqbs 7 месяцев назад +32

      is this like a trial for him? does he specifically have to continue through the program with the demon to be considered worthy of staying in the wizard world? Even if he has to lose his magic, there isn’t a solid reason given why he can’t exist in the world as a muggle beyond the broad background of muggle discrimination. This is the one thing plot thread that never ended in a satisfying way for me, which, oddly enough, represents the indifference of broader institutions pretty damn well.

    • @fenrirsdaughter9880
      @fenrirsdaughter9880 7 месяцев назад +163

      The Wizarding world had figured that out recently, yes, that any human could do magic. So yes, muggles can become wizards. Elitist wizards are just prejudiced against muggles. But maybe something about the exorcism process itself severs magical ability? We know magic can be taken away. Talula can never do magic again until she does a good deed because of Evan's spell, so magic can DEFINITELY be taken away.

    • @Myusollo
      @Myusollo 7 месяцев назад +116

      My interpretation was that the demon had attached itself to the magic part of him, so removing it would be like amputating the magic part. Presumably, something like squibs from HP still exist, and saying EVERYONE has magic is an exaggeration.
      What always bothered me MORE was how the nurse didn’t double-check that Evan knew doing this would tank the whole pilot program. That’s something I’d put in super-clear language, especially since he mentioned staying while the others did magic. I get Aabria was trying to do a big finale reveal and that’s hard to navigate with improv, but still, it’s a plot hole.

    • @sugarqbs
      @sugarqbs 7 месяцев назад +38

      @@fenrirsdaughter9880 I forgot about this plot point; this really confirms for me that magic is more common than it’s initially established but isn’t a necessary part of each human. these responses help a lot, thank you both

    • @MrMighty147
      @MrMighty147 7 месяцев назад +31

      @@sugarqbs I always thought that the Wizard Establishment was keeping muggles out of the wizard world by omitting the fact that every human can learn magic to them. And the ordinary wizard people don't really think about the muggle-world all that much, maybe due to propaganda or other means of information control. So it's normal for them to think "If you can't do magic you can't live here" sort of like xenophobia in a "if you don't speak my language you can't live in my country" kind of way. And so taking a humans magic away is just something you can do, just like you could curse someone or make them blind or whatever. And so the Exorcism would just have the side effect of also taking Evans Ability for Magic away.

      "yes, and" is like a rule-of-thumb in improv. Try to always go with what your improv partner(s) started and build on it with your own flavor.
      "No, but" is like people trying to have a heartfelt moment about their dog passing and cutting them off saying "I shoot my gun in the air and peel out in my Camaro"
      This is expertly in the middle because Brennan is a beast storyteller / actor. Rules are meant to be mastered and then broken artistically

    • @meribor
      @meribor 7 месяцев назад +18

      I feel the improve axiom of "yes and" plays differently in long-form improv like TTRPGs.
      Evan's loathing for this part of himself was very very established. If anything, it was Aabria that appeared to offer a "no but," but I feel she wasn't following yes, and/no, but improv guideline. I think she was setting up her scene partner to help him say something important about his character. Aabria put these words into Nurse Stitchnit for Brennan to play off of to show how rigid Evan was in his thinking.
      And by doing this, Aabria was essentially "yes, anding" Brennan's choice!

    • @awm95
      @awm95 7 месяцев назад +18

      IMO, Scene is like this:
      Aabria: You could do great things and learn to love your magic.
      Options are then:
      Yes, and: Brennan says, "Yes, maybe you're right, and I'm going to do my best to control my magic and protect my friends."
      No, but: Brennan says, "No, I can only be a danger to my friends, but if I have to choose between leaving my friends behind or staying with them, then I'll do my best to control my magic and protect my friends,"
      No, and: Brennan says, "No, I can only be a danger to my friends, and I would rather lose my magic and leave them behind than put them in danger."
      The first two are collaborative and seek to end up at the same destination, either by building on your partner's idea or by offering an alternative.
      The second opposes your partner's idea, and reinforces that opposition by building on your own position.
      Evan Kelmp doubling down on getting the procedure "no, and"s Aabria's attempt to get him to accept his magic by convincing him he can do good with it as well.

      @@awm95 That's a fair assessment.
      As a long time fan and participant of improvisational performance, it's important to note that "Yes, and" is a rule/guideline designed to serve as a foundation for being a positive participant in spontaneous action. In a more specific moment like the one here, it is definitely reasonable and even practical to abandon the notion of "yes at all costs". It led to a moment that was much deeper and real than following the script would have been.

      @@JohnnyBoy-wi4kn Having a preference isn't what I (can't talk for the other commenter) took issue with. You kinda just brought up CR for no reason just to say D20 did it better. You can just say "This show getting me to care about characters in very few episodes is a feat of storytelling." You don't then need to say that a whole different show, with a totally different format, runtime and focus, is worse in that aspect.
      Critical Role is very focused on plot and wordlbuilding, whereas D20 is interested in experimentation with genre and improv comedy. They're aiming at different things, and so I don't think it's totally fair to judge them by the exact same metric. They're similar in some respects, yes, but they are still different, and should be examined differently. I don't think there's a lot of room for "D20 did this better. CR is better at this," because they're not trying to do many of the same things.
      You can also just praise the show. You don't need to say you think it's better than something else. That gives people the impression that, by bringing it up unprompted, you're trying to hate on CR because there's no real reason to say that apart from saying that it did something worse than D20.
      Hope this doesn't come off as being triggered or whatever. It just irks me to see these small-scale signs of weird, bad faith fandom culture when the people showing these signs likely don't even realise it. That's my TED Talk over, though.

      "Normal" Dnd players don't have professional acting experience, Branden Lee Mulligan does. And Aabria has been Dming for many different tables for years. It's called being a professional. And I would at all be surprised if she didn't get a nice paycheck for DMing these days.
      "does noone ever realize that this is a basically a TV show and not a bunch of friends that play Dnd?" Why does this matter? Like at all. It's entertaining, period. You clearly have never been to a public dnd game. They are as about as rigid and boring as the news, nobody is friends with anyone, and nobody ever wants to roleplay. Yet that is no less valid than this, or a normal home game. Dnd has to be the sadist thing you could ever gatekeep. Please seek help.

    So... I ran my own version of this one snd it was nowhere near as well run. But there was one scene that made my players tear up snd it remains my pride and joy as a GM. Happy tears. Tears of, "Oh man, you cant be doin that to us" and. There's something so special about what they did here that it translates even when it's just being ripped off by someone like me.

      maybe the real magic is the misfits we made along the way
      but seriously outside of the experience we all get from watching their campaigns, I’m sure they’re overjoyed to know that their influence is changing and expanding the possibilities that people see and perform in roleplaying as a whole. I for one can’t wait to experience more of this empathetic storytelling for myself: to really be seen in media.
