Homemade Rocket Motor Test X2

- Fructose and sorbitol sugars are excellent materials for rocket fuel. Today, I conducted a test using a 3/4" PVC sample of each sugar, along with a 1/4" fender washer placed in the nozzle. For this test, I utilized a new thrust stand that connects to my phone via Bluetooth.
The motors performed well and generated satisfactory thrust. Overall, I am pleased with the easy construction and results of this test.

Cheers from Dominican Republic, love your videos! Keep up the good work!!
I would like to order 100 or so of these as well as a lightweight chair and some zip ties
Making them is half the fun, don't forget your jacket, it's cold up there!
Hello, I have a problem with my icing sugar and potassium nitrate rocket engine. He flew to me once, and now he doesn't want to fly. I make the casing out of cardboard, nozzles out of gypsum and fuel 65% potassium nitrate and 35% icing sugar. The nozzles do not fly out, the fuel burns properly, but there is no starting impulse to fly. Anyone know what could be wrong.
Hello, the slow start up of motor may be fixed by making custom igniters out of black powder, which you can buy or easily DIY. The problem is with low pressure which igniter generates. The pressure then slowly rises until motor reaches its full power. Custom igniters can generate this needed initial pressure very fast.
Yes, that is correct, and I do make my own dipped igniters, as I've posted a video on the subject. The issue with this setup is that the nozzle is too small to accommodate a dipped igniter that extends all the way to the top.
For sugar motors of this size, they typically take a little longer to ignite compared to other types. This delay in ignition is quite common and will not affect performance.
Thanks for your comment!
I've been looking for a proper test stand for my motors can you tell me where you got that?
I purchased it from Boris du Reau, he makes budget friendly altimeters and the Arduino board is already programmed to measure thrust and pressure. It sends data by bluetooth to your phone and works great! Email: boris.dureau@neuf.fr
He lives in France and speaks English as well. I am planning a video in a few months that demonstrates how to use it. You can contact me at CaptHaywire@gmail.com for more information.
Very nice.
What is you used Maltose instead of fructose or sorbitol?
Maltose should work fine.
With the sugar options that you have tried has xylitol been one and if so how did it preform?
I have not tried xylitol. At this time I am working with fructose.
@@TheRocketeer i hope someday you could try xylitol, i read it had many benefits over the other sugar fuels, but i would love to see how it compares with the other KN propellants
for that size, isnt that too weak?
The motor is a piece of pipe and a couple of washers. The idea here is simplicity and not max performance. I thought it performed well.
I was wondering if you could replace some of the sugar with wax? Theoretically, it should offer better energy, gas volume and ISP. The Idea would be to mix all the powders and then melt in some wax, which binds the grains like water in clay. You could then ram this mixture into a grain mold.
It sounds possible to include wax but typically melted sugar propellants out perform rammed fuel.
