Grants original video on sugar rockets was the first video I ever watched on this channel (right back when it was first uploaded) and still remains my favourite of all time! Please can you keep doing more videos like this because I feel like the channel has drifted a long way away from what it used to be with Grant and feels too much like a full production company now. Would be good to do more crazy small scale sceince projects and low budget diy builds...I'm pretty sure others would agree with me too?

As a Veteran Air Force Rocket Fuel Handler I found this video really fun to watch. I used to work with UMDH hydrazine and N2O4 nitrogen tetroxide. I have found that some of the powdered sugars I've bought seems to be cut with seems to be corn starch, and therefore won't burn as hot, reducing thrust. A friend told me to grind up some pure granulated sugar into a fine powder and try that. My thrust test stand even indicated better performance! Great video!

Neat! Your vid popped up in my feed and I had to watch. My model rocketry phase came and went 40 years ago may Estes be praised. My first project was a $16 kit I purchased at the Huntsville Space and Rocket museum. The 3.5 foot tall Saturn V. Took a couple of months to put that thing together. And I mean I worked hard on it. Built my launch 'rocket box' with lights, switches, the works.
But...I knew about the sugar stuff 50 years ago. My friend BooBoo told me about it. Only my mix was 3 to 2 with regular sugar. Tried cooking with water. What a plastic mess and it spewed less. Ha! Back then you could get the PN at the corner drug store. Yep, still had those things then. My stuff only spewed, of course. I never quite made the leap in logic to using it for rocket propellant.

A better option is to dip news paper in a solution of nitrate and chorate oxidising salt at a certain ratio to water. Once the newspaper laden with the oxidising salt solution are dried , it can be rolled up into a tube and insert into into the rocket tubular body. The advantage of paper over sugar is it is lighter and cheaper than sugar. I have built multiple stage rocket during my childhood days. By the way great videos. Remind me of my childhood days.

I did something like this, oh about 40 years ago, only I used 12 gauge shotgun casings and cooked sugar candy fuel poured around a 1/8" screw which is later removed. On top of this was a Whistling Pete firework to provide even more entertainment. Though the Whistling Pete worked better with Estes D size booster, with a C motor as the 2nd stage. These were taped to bamboo garden stakes.

I remember studying space in science class in 8th grade and we built rockets from paper towel rolls and used a "hollowed" egg for the nose cone. After that we were offered extra credit if we built a rocket (bought from Hobby Store or not) and bring it in and launch it on our field day. I needed the extra credit so I did it. I loved building my rocket, but had some kind of failure on the launch and the engine broke free and shot up inside the body of the rocket where it proceeded to start burning. LOL I still got my extra credit though.
