I’d be pulling that ecu out and opening it up to check the capacitors and traces because if the start leaking and they will after 30+ years then you will start having all kinds of idle problems. There is also a hand full of sensors that will cause idle surging problems. Also wouldn’t hurt to do a base idle reset on it too. Oh and don’t forget to put a smoke machine on the vacuum system and check for leaks.

I’d also be ripping that fire hazard under charging pos 2g alternator off and converting it to 3g with a 4 gauge wire with an inline 150 amp circuit breaker asap!

14:39 so far I have to say that I like what I am seeing, I would have to say that if I can get a good response from you I will be a subscription holder and possibly a donor to the channel. First time viewing you all. I'm the proud owner of a great used new ride to me and I could use the learning and advice. I bought a 1988 Mercury Cougar XR 7 with 50K on the clock. Not a speck of rust on the car anywhere on the car and I mean anywhere. A older guy that is almost 90 tried to get it to run with his son and then they gave up and they were going to scrap it! I had to buy it because not only was there no rust on it the interior looks like the day it rolled off the show room floor! It was kept in a climate controlled garage and it was kept at 70°F in the summer and 45°F in the winter and was parked and not moved since 1995. The two men put a new fuel tank, new fuel lines, new fuel filter, new Idle Air Control sensor, cleaned the EGR and put new used fuel injectors in it. No luck and they brought it to my work where a certified Ford mechanic went over it and it would only run if you tapped on the injectors and it would run and idle but stall. I put a new PCM in it and no luck, then I got brand new injectors for a Mustang GT HO 5.0 in it for a 89 in it and it fires right up and runs and drives now. Only thing left now is to find the PCV valve location underneath the intake upper manifold somewhere. I just put the Intake on the top today and took it for a ride and all is well. Got to tune it up and put struts or springs underneath the front with shocks. She is bouncing around up front pretty good. 😊 It's going to be a great platform for a good classic/ antique ride that I always wanted. I'm going to get caught up with the channel the best I can and go from there. You have a great evening and I will pass you along with my friends and enjoying your video.

Wow! Thanks for the comment! Your XR7 sounds like it has great potential. Sounds like maybe it had been stored with cheap fuel in it. Glad you were able to get it running! If it were mine I would avoid ethanol fuel. The early generations of fuel injection systems did not get along with it. There’s a likelihood that the hitch back Mustang will be back for more fun in the shop so stay tuned! Otherwise enjoy our content and welcome to the channel!

Just so you know, I use to work at the Ford plant that made throttle bodies and they use to coat the bottom of the throttle plates with some sort of black goo to mimic how it would get after being used. They were calibrated that way so they wouldn't change after actually being used.

Oh no, I just seen that you cleaned the bottom of the throttle plate.😲

@@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 No "goo" on this throttle plate and things run great. Thanks for the comment, that is some interesting info!

Sorry I missed your comment! I’d try cleaning the throttle body and idle air control first. You can try to reset the idle using the method you described but the Fords sure like cleaned from time to time.

Don't give up on it. Mine bucked reeaallllyyyy bad while driving when I first got it. I flew out to Colorado to buy it and drove it back home to Georgia with it doing that. It had a ton of vacuum leaks. I fixed all of those and it stopped bucking while driving.

    1986 through 88 5.0 Mustangs don't have a check engine light.
