Keeping out of the rain is a huge concern when it comes to shelter and survival, the Longhouse mastered this feat with natural materials that came directly from the land. This Survival Shelter went way beyond survival it really is the Ultimate Bushcraft Survival Shelter often housing up to twenty families and being up to 300 feet or 100 meters long. This longhouse is similar to those built by Iroquoian speaking peoples of the past such as the Huron-Wendat. Geographic origins of this style Longhouse Shelter would have been in what is now southern Ontario Canada and up state New York USA. The longhouse was and is a marvel of Primitive technology. Along With Shawn James of My Self Reliance Doug Linker and Jim Baird We rainproof the longhouse shelter with natural ash bark we source from the forest using only hand tools.
Shawn built an off grid cabin he built alone, with hand tools in the Canadian wilderness. He has helped inspire many and shown the beauty of escaping modern society, returning back to our routes and becoming self reliant. While visiting Shawn's I take the time to explore his off grid cabin his sauna forest kitchen and and very am impressed with his craftsmanship and attention to detail. I also Hike down into his valley and enjoy the tranquil Nature sounds and enjoy some wildlife viewing. Its a Beautiful place.
I have learned a great deal on this project and that it takes a community to complete such tasks. So much of what we think of today of survival ion in society is often based on being Alone when our ancestors worked well together as a team in order to thrive.
