    Lots of good info. A question about the bubble float. I use the Sony A7III which has a level that is visible on the screen. Is that a suitable replacement for a bubble float? Thanks!

      Hi Gary,
      The leveler in camera works just fine for single images as does the bubble float ontop of the ball head.
      It's just when you try and do a pano, you want to get the tripod legs level so a flat plane for the ball head to sit on. 👍

    I found a Gitzo 1227 carbon fibre tripod for £8 in a charity shop... Not modern but bigger and more rigid than my lovely 3LT Leo, certainly cheaper and better with the A7iii plus 24-105

      That's a fantastic find!! It's amazing what is knocking around in some second hand shops or hidden in the back of those smaller local camera shops. 😁👍

    Why isn't the tripod disappearing into the sand?

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  4 года назад

      Because it's not quicksand! 😆
      The dunes in the UAE are pretty solid and so even though it initially sinks in a little, it is pretty sturdy.

    I have an amazon basics and a geekoto carbon fiber, obviously there is a world of difference, the geekoto carbon fiber is really nice, but I wouldn’t dismiss completely the 0.5kg 15$ Amazon basics, if there is no much wind and the camera is not too heavy it does the job, I used it here flic.kr/p/SBAMQC with a Nikon d5300 and it seems to me that it does the job (only standard landscape orientation....)

    I have a Prima Photo Tripod PHKP001 it weighs 1.1 KG
    It has a bag hook to increase stability
    Big clips to extend the legs.
    Robust.
    Has a bubble level.
    Around 20 pounds.
    You can’t fault it for the price.

    Great advice, Mike. I beat up my tripods so it is hard to spend much on them. Once I used one with a rope as a grappling hook to climb a sheer cliff. I would not do that with a carbon fiber but a cheapo, no problem. I throw them up boulders and drop them off bridges. Stay safe and sane.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  4 года назад

      Haha!! Excellent!! That is proper use of a tripod...I beat the crap out of mine too...thats why I tend to have the old opex ones as they're only about 30 dollars or so...we'll see how the K&F one survives my abuse!! 😆

    First of all excellent tutorial! I have been looking for a tripod for my canon5dmark3 with my Tamron 24-70 lens which is a fairly heavy combination, but I don't want a heavy tripod which I know I'll be reluctant to carry in my long hikes. Given my camera and lens combination, I would need a sturdy and stable tripod, do you have any suggestions? Also, I couldn't help but notice your fitness tracker, is it the Garmin Vivo active? Thanks for the videos and keep up the good work

      Maybe the manfrotto 190...that is a lot lighter than my 055, especially the carbon model.
      I have the huawei gt2e...works really well with my huawei phone...even though the Chinese are probably spying on me!! 😆

    Oh my, Mike. I just replaced my cheap tripod with a better one more suitable for traveling (compact & light). I had to do a biiig research, was choosing between manfrotto befree and mefoto backpacker. Chose the second, it's not that high even with the center column, but it's just 30cm and 1.1kg!

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  4 года назад +1

      It is always a trade off between weight and total size when choosing one for travelling. Sounds like a tiny one but it'll probably do just fine...just find a rocky outcrop to sit on behind it so you can get yourself at the right height! 😁👍

    Great video w clear and concise tips. I have a tripod for video, a hybrid CF tripod w a befree fluid head for travel, a Photography tripod w a 3 way geared head, a joby flexible minintripod and a small pedco ultra tripod(fits in the pocket). The last one is my goto tripod when going out for dinner while traveling and is always w me as a safety tripod in case I forget to bring one at a job.

    I switched from the Manfrotto to the Peak Design Travel Tripod partly for its weight and handling. The aluminum version is already fairly light and easy to handle.

    I bought the tripod looking all the features mentioned in this video. After buying a cheap tripod, I did lots of research, reviews to buy a solid tripod. I looked at all the features you mentioned. Also I looked legs section and head section can be separable. (In My first tripod, head and legs can't be separated).
    Really wonderful video. If you publish this video in last year, I didn't waste my time to do research to buy good one.

      Thanks Ravi,
      It is a bit of a minefield when buying a tripod. Even though my manfrotto 055 is a good tripod I've never been happy with it for travelling and hiking. I've been putting off getting a new one up until now and always been frustrated with all of the different tripods I've had ... so I've not really had the info needed to be able to make and share this video until now. 👍
      That's another good point. It's always good to get a tripod that can be separated form the head, just in case you want to upgrade one or the other.
      As always, thanks for watching Ravi! 😁👍

    I'd add the option to put the central column in a horizontal position. I've got a cheap one and I miss this feature.

    Tripods are one of those purchases that can really drive you mad. I have a few of them, but find that my go to is the Peak Design. The reason for this is that it is so portable and light. I have the carbon fiber one, which will set you back a little. It is like that saying that the best camera is the one you have with you. My Peak Design tripod is always with me due to its portability. Thanks for the Thursday upload, Mike. My days are back on track now. Good luck in the home search. Take care, brother.

      Haha! I hope you can still use my videos as your calendar, they are back to the normal times again now!! 😆
      You're right when it comes to tripods...since having the K&F carbon fiber one, I take that everywhere with me and it has come in handy...I really found that I left the 055 manfrotto at home a lot and had a few situations where I could have done with it, but my back wouldn't have been happy lugging it around!
      A few years ago we hiked up a huge volcano in Java and I had the 055 with me...and way to much other kit...nearly killed me...😆🤦🏻‍♂️
      Thanks dude...we're definitely looking forward to getting settled in now! 😁👍

      'a little'?! It costs more than my lens do! It doesn't have any killer features worth it, and its legs are too thin.
