Some stations have reported that some of these homes were abandoned, condemned or unoccupied..what baffles me is why the city or state did not order the owners to dismantle the homes before it got this bad..the shore did not get this close over night..smh
2:30 - Notice that this house, which still has outdoor furniture on its porches and a green garden hose on the top floor, is missing one of its front support poles, 3rd from the right. There is a sag in the lower porch right there due to the absent support. So even though everything appears to be OK, it's not. I'd say this structure would be another victim of the ocean in the near future.
"Paradise Hatteras Style" was the name of this rental. Stayed there in 2017 or 2018, and watched the ocean crashing under the house four doors down toward the pier as they raced to pile sand under it with a Bobcat. Sorry to see this continuing to happen.
Wow that is crazy! The fact you stayed there a few years ago and how the shoreline is changing and you actually saw that at the time. Sad, but...nature, I guess. 😕
@@maryr6300 Yep! The satellite view on Google Maps still shows the walkway and seating area the house had (plus the amount of beach between there and the water). When we stayed there, the seating area was gone, and the walkway just ended and there was about a 4' drop off to the sand. High tide and it was under the walkway. It's the 5th house south of the Rodanthe Pier. 24183 Ocean Dr.
Wow, crazy!! Hey, we rented the house to the left (if looking from the ocean) in October. I have some good 4K drone footage from that trip if you want to use it as a before reference. Totally free. No copyright bs. Just do what you want with it.
I rented this house back in 05 or 06. The beach used to be a good 100 yds wider. Of course, then the Pier was longer as well. This place had a board walkway leading off the deck to another sitting deck back then. Not sure when that went. Loved that house! So sorry!
Poor zoning with very little thought about the future . Someone has to have the cajones to speak the truth about what people are buying. The ever changing outer banks is fact .
I can’t understand why they are even still there! The councils should of knocked them down before the first house got washed into the ocean… I don’t want all that mess in my ocean. We work hard cleaning our shores.
Or Lake Michigan. The whole eastern shore is being washed away. Its heartbreaking to see the destruction. But it is a historically repeated event. Fantastic drone videos. Beverly Shores, Michigan City and north up the whole shoreline.
No...but people sure did make alot of money down here......and alot of good times have been had. This is such a shame it has to be that way. When did this become a test of Intellegence?? What world are you living in
So obviously owners are aware of the impending destruction of their homes .. couldn't they move them or at the least take them down so they don't add to the destruction of the ocean?
I’m pretty sure that once the house is condemned that the owner is not allowed to go back in it. Also, where would they move it? That area is packed with houses and you would have to buy another lot if you could find one.
We’ve rented the yellow house next door. The house that went in hasn’t been rented during the past 2 summers. I imagine that the owners had already taken out things of value that they could remove
Wow, all those houses look like they are in danger. Here in VA Beach they are doing sand replenishment every 5 or 6 years. City wants their tax revenue, I guess maybe oceanfront is not a good idea in Rodanthe
Hate to c those homes go but the question is for the row of houses behind the ones that the ocean is taking ….. With the ocean rising at unbelievable depths I believe the county ought to make them move or tear them down b4 they r next
Is it me? Or is the outer Banks shrinking? I been coming here since I was a teenager you had several of yards of beach from the ocean to the house. Images in my mind how the outer Banks once looked till now is shocking. Makes wonder about the so called climate change rising sea levels? Looks like you’re fighting against the ocean yet he seems to be winning highway 12 is done for what’s next? I guess you’ll can say Elizabethtown turtle Alley is gonna be your future beach if this keeps up.
The Outer Banks are barrier islands that have been moving toward the mainland for many thousands of years-- well much longer than that but I'm not going to look up how much longer. Anyway, the islands naturally build up and are pushed toward land. Sort of like they are almost rolling over themselves as they move landward. That's why in storms you see sand pushed up onto the roads. Humans do their best to interfere, removing that sand and building up dunes. That may result in more erosion in some areas, though in geologic time scales it won't make much of a difference.
Even if the destroyed houses are cleaned up, there is no way the can get all of the nails, broken glass, metal parts cleaned up. Swimming, playing, or running will be very hazardous from now on. The beaches are ruined!
A professor at our local university gave a lecture recently and he was asked a question at end of talk by a student .."you said you love living near the sea ...where do you live ..."? He ans.. "300 metres above sea level ..we look down onto the ocean from a distance.......
Those houses were built when the shore was much further out. Been renting down in that row of homes for many years. Sad to see what is happening but that is the nature of barrier islands.
Watching your money float away can’t be easy. Lots of memories tied up in these properties. Looks like it’s worth saving to me. But I know nothing about the area. 😢
It makes no sense to let the houses go in to the ocean. Take them down hauling away all the dabree, to keep it out of the ocean .im nobody if I had to say something I can assure you no one will do any thing 💯 glad I don't live by the ocean
They are all Condemned....slowly over the next few years they will all be gone...why do they waste their money building on the beach?????? Crazy people!!!!

And your 100% right about that .
When does the government ever ask the wealthy to spend money?
unbelievable! no beach restoration? seems so sad and stupid to have built there .

Well on a positive note the next row of houses will have the beach front property pretty soon from the looks of things
Mother Nature is slowly warning this beach town .
That row of houses in back are going to be worth a fortune real soon
Who would want them as the ocean will keep moving in. No thank you
the ocean is coming for those next
Why do you say that? They’re the next ones to go.
"mother nature does not take sides, she only maintains the balance of life!"

Sad to see houses go, but it is the nature of barrier islands to move and change.

I have so many questions... do owners have to clean up what they can?
I've stayed in the nice single story cottage across the street. Now, it's ocean side.
Cannot understand anyone building homes so close to the water's edge to satisfy their own ego's and in the process damaging our precious coastline.,
Thanks for sharing this :)
It’s wild that that many people thought this was a good idea
Building that close to the sea is definitely a gamble. I hope the rest of us don't have to pay for this. It's going to continue as the seas rise.
It's been happening since the end of the last ice age, nothing new.
Anytime you live near the Sea you will pay for it,,, it’s why they tax you more, car tags are ridiculous high… food tax higher, etc,,,,
@@uncov8127 that wasn't part of the original comment. You like paying for the failed games of the rich?

they can put the sand beaches back palm island didnt just magicaly appear
I manage a planetarium in NC, would it be ok if I use this clip for educational purposes with credit listed?
The row of houses behind are next. What an abomination to build these things in the first place.
Exactly why I would never want oceanfront. Far away as possible.
The ocean wasn’t this close when the homes were built. This is the result of beach erosion
Its a beach with tide and oceans waves hitting it very second what u expcet
Quiseram a beira do oceano só pra eles
I imagine when tbe jug handle is done, so are tbem houses
You should never build your house on the sands. It will come tumbling down. The sand shifts.
Do you have any video of it in the process of falling in? Did the owners get their belongings out?
I imagine they did when the saw the waves starting to go near it. The island is shrinking 20 years ago you would have had more beach there.
I wonder if these homeowner pay property tax especially the homes on the ocean.
Proof positive wealth doesn't equal intelligence.

That’s ridiculous that they are allowed to build houses on the beach!
In the 80s and 90s, these houses were two football fields from the ocean. This island is a sandbar, always shifting always moving.
Why didn't they take the houses down before polluting the ocean? They knew it was going.

There's an interesting video called Ribbon of Sand, narrated by Glenn Close. Worth a watch.
No it not climate change, it's called beach erosion. It's been going on for millions of years.

Nice footage. And, it is unfortunate for the homeowner. It's a good case for constructing a seawall.
Sea walls often cause more damage further along the coast.
The whole planet is progressing towards being uninhabitable, remember.
