    Tell me again why people think it's a good idea to build houses on beaches? I guess I'm in the minority on thinking that it's an extremely poor choice of location.

    This house was built hundreds of feet from the ocean years ago. In fact, there used to be a paved street and several rows of houses between this house and the ocean, but the ocean has eroded all of the land. And the insurance industry is exactly to blame for this. They will not pay out in advance to remove the house, the house must collapse first before insurance will cover anything

      It appears that some houses are far better braced at the piling than others. The ones that are diagonally braced from top down seem to fair much better.
      As a retired home builder in Myrtle Beach,I can attest that you can’t overdo the bracing.
      In this video the unit that collies only braced at the top of the pilings. The one that’s still standing is.
      Lesson here? [Also, Myrtle Bech had much stricter building codes than these house were built under. NC used to be notoriously slack in that area.]

    • @chasetonga

      Tell me why it is sad rich people build homes on the beach knowing hurricanes are highly probable? I have no sympathy for idiots who build in high risk areas. The tax payers shouldn’t be responsible for their bad choices.

      @TomVanPelt-j8o 3 месяца назад +1

      Boy, is my typing terrible! Full disclosure-I barely passed typing class in 8th grade (1963-64). Sorry.
      But my point is valid. The units I’ve seen float away have all been poorly braced. SC is actually way ahead of NC in this area. The State (and insurance companies) ought to require additional cross bracing on all houses built on piles, on the ocean or inland. Ye godz.

    • @loopshackr
      @loopshackr 3 месяца назад

      @@TomVanPelt-j8o Impressive how the braced house next door just shrugged off the collision (hope there weren't dishes on shelves), though it, too, is doomed. Its septic system is ripped out and overwashed, no power, and the ocean will eventually not be denied. If insurers won't pay, seems like builders within X distance from the surf should be required to put up a bond for the eventual cleanup... it's just business, after all.
