Part of the problem is the 'applique', which is the driver's side panel with touch pad. If it cracks and comes open, the wires can get damaged, causing the tailgate not to work at all. If that happens, you have to replace the applique. Then, the tailgate will work like new.

That repair will last about 10 openings.
I have a 2017 Explorer, only my liftgate won't open at all. Computer scan says something about not communicating with module.

Probably the lift gate latch actuator. Just repaired mine replacing it.
