My sister is an author as well and she said that characters 'introduce' themselves to her. There's no way changing them or their names because this is just the way they are. I think this is a very nice little thing. :)
At 3:02, those are sold in the States as Bugles. They come in several flavors including: Original (plain), Chocolate Peanut Butter, Caramel, Nacho Cheese, Shrimp, and several others.
Jolly Romania My brother and I walk through cemeteries and create lives for people we think have cool names. One that we still talk about today is a woman named Kathryn Montague. We call her Great-Great Grandma Montague and we'll occasionally talk about her as if she was really part of our family. It's become a hilarious inside joke within my family.
Can't wait for this new project to be announced officially! And I think that even if the name of that character is too good to be wasted on such a small character, if it feels like that IS the name of the character then definitely stick with it - if the characters name themselves then just go with it - I absolutely can't wait for On The Other Side!! And I just got your poster from The Hopeful Shop and it is amazing - its so cool to have something scribbled on just by you - it feels really personal but I know thats silly xD Love you Carrie xx
I've been searching for the name of those chips for a solid month now!!! The only thing I remembered about them was that you spoke about them in a Dear Tom&Gi video, and that they were chips covered in chocolate, but that was literally the only thing I remembered, so I've been googling and posing questions on tumblr, and I'm so glad I thought to rewatch all the Tom&Gi videos, because I finally found them!! Thanks Carrie xx
Carrie, I just saw you in Les Mis!!!! I just want to let you know that you are an incredible actress and you are the best Eponine ever! I hope I can one day be as great as you are. I love you and your work! So excited for your book to come out in the U.S.!
Carrie, you are so beautiful and talented. You can sing, act, write and write songs. And, you still have time to do your job. Carrie you are wonderful and are my role model xxx
Carrie, you inspire me so much. You're always doing so many different things at once with working on your previous book, writing your new one, working at Les Mis, creating videos etc etc... I don't know how you do it but I find it so amazing and inspiring that you have the energy to fill your days to the brink and still be such a positive, cheery person. I'm trying to work hard to become as motivated as you and stop wasting so many hours of my life. P.S. Thank you for making these videos, they make me happy :D ♥♥
Carrie youre so hard working and i really admire that, but you clearly have a lot going on, so please dont feel pressured to upload all the time, we understand if youre busy :) ilyx
my birthday was about a week ago and the only thing on my wishlist was all i know now and i didnt get it but my mum told me that there was one more she didnt give me and gave me it yesterday, i cried for hours after i opened it and i dont know why! im honestly so happy and i cant stop reading it, thank you for making me so happy and being such a huge part of my life, I LOVE YOU.
I went to see Les Mis last night Carrie and it was an amazing show!! Everyone was brilliant!! I cried buckets!! Everyone is so talented and I'm so glad I got to see you pour your heart out on stage!! I hope I can see you on stage again!! I'll definitely come down if (sorry) WHEN you're playing Lily in the new Harry Potter stage production :) xxx
I recently named a character that was unnamed for a very long time. I was watching a tv series and came across a name I'd never heard before and it fit her perfectly and since then I feel like I've been able to be much more invested in her character (though it doesn't do me that much good for the main story, I love expanding my universe).
Carrie your a true inspiration and listening to how many things you have going on motivates me to get my act together! Keep up the good work with everything love you 😊😘
I think the Dear Tom, Gi & Carrie videos are my favorite to watch...I think it's because I am just super nosy! I pick names for characters by slightly adjusting names of people I know or names I hear.
When I'm writing a story and I can't come up with a name I google names that were popular in the country the character lives in around a certain time (1800's for example).
I usually do all of my character name research on baby name websites, I would recommend Nameberry. The meaning of certain names really help to make or break a character. I also happen to have a list of random names (with nicknames) and surnames if I ever need one on the spot. I might be overdoing it a bit but I just love anthroponymy so much as it is! :D
Thanks for teaching the world about Smash! Overprized, but we love it in Norway. They're basically chocolate covered Bugles. But for some reason we don't have Bugles in Norway..
I do exactly the same with my characters, i feel it's sort of a sorting hat syndrome where they make their own decision and I just implement it. That might be a bad analogy, oh well. Also, super excited for your 'project' All I Know Now has become one of my favourite things to recommend at work (I work in a book shop) and if the new project is what I think then I'm sure it'll be a real winner
It doesn't matter what you do, you mesmerise me all the time. You are so amazing! I'm half way through All I Know Now and can't stop reading it!:) I can't wait to read your next book😊😊
The way your characters tell you something isn't unusual a large amount of creative writers experience this, in my fiction for children module at uni, we were told to ask our characters questions and they would talk back. I struggled a lot with this and this kind of side of creative writing, however, I know a lot of people do do it, so your not alone :)
I really relate to the character naming thing! Once I've "chosen" a name for a character (or maybe the characters chose their own names), it becomes almost impossible for me to change it, like I would be breaking some secret law of nature! Also.. I really, really want that onesie
In the U.S. Smash are Bugels but minus the chocolate. They are actually kind of rare here now but my friends and I used to put Cheese Wiz inside of them (fake cheese in an icing can basically lol)
Carrieeeeee - here's the great thing about tiny characters...after you write this book...you can further explore his story...either professionally (to be published later) or for fun ;) Perhaps a future novella? I love characters like that...so here's my encouragement to you :)
Years and years ago my class went to listen to an author talk at the local library, can't remember her name, but she said she gets ideas for characters' names by staying after everyone else leaves in the cinema and looking for interesting names in the credits!
I came down to watch Les mis last night! Spent all of the money I got for my 21st just to come watch the show and meet Carrie. The one night she is t coming out or signing autographs -_- Sad times.
Just4UGaming Unfortunately you only pay to see the show and not to also have a Meet and Greet with the actors! Meeting actors is never a guarantee and shouldn't be expected! It's just a bonus to the whole experience if you do! I'm currently working 10am-11pm everyday and so needed to travel to hour and a half home to get to sleep before the next day started! I do hope you enjoyed the show and felt that the money you spent on the ticket to see it was well spent! Very sorry we didn't meet. Perhaps in the future! :) xxx
***** Thanks for the reply! I didn't mean it in a 'YOU SHOULD MEET THE PEOPLE AFTERWARDS' way, I'm just a but gutted I didn't get to say Hi. P.s I loved the show. I was front row on the far left (my angle) so at one point you were right next to me, so I will count that as meeting you :)
So many blessings for a woman who definitely deserves it. Excited for " the other side" to be published. I must say that reading the title of this video, I thought you were going to announced that u will be playing Elsa in a show or something...lol if that ever happens that would be awesome! BTW Im a choir singer and I tire out singing for two hours, what remedies do u use for preserving your voice?
Whenever I write I have the same thing! I always feel like characters tell me who they are, and I have to get to know them, rather than I'm making them up! :)
Hey Carrie! I don't know if you've seen Inside Out yet (you absolutely should, its amazing) but in the beginning there is the "Lava" short....I think it would be so cute if you covered the song with your ukulele! Just an idea...much love from your Hopeful xoxo
I love that you post and talk about norwegian snacks =) It makes me kind of proud to be from Norway =) And yes we do have some great snacks....you tried the melkesjokolade ***** ... If i knew how I would send you some Tom.
I have such trouble with character's names, and a lot of it comes from character naming themselves. When I'm lucky, it's "Hi, I'm Damien", and that's that. yes! the characters choose their own names too in my head. I sometimes write down every name i can think of but if I found the name, the character in my head would be like, 'no, don't write anymore. this is MY name'

i name my characters by looking up "names that mean *insert one of their traits*" and i usually have a few letters in mind that i want the name to start out with
Personally, I had that too with characters, like I felt they picked their names, but it's kinda slowed down now (after four years of writing). Mostly because I don't just come up with names anymore, I have to put quite a bit of time and effort into finding a few that could work and then picking the one that feels most right, by that point I can usually still change the name. And secondly, a character's new name is just something you need to get used to but after a while it's alright. :) xxx
Yeah for everything going on, you work really hard so Cudos. Now on to the important facts those shark things are called Bugles in America. They have a caramel coated one that is the Bees Knees. Just FYI...
I feel like my characters have names before I write them. When I imagine my characters, their names are just there, the same way I can see the colour of their hair or their clothes
Smash is litterally the best kind of crisp thingy, Oh Carrie why did you have to remind me of it, now I feel sad that I probably won't have some for years.... Oh well I might beg my norwegian friend to bring me some when she goes there this summer
The name chooses the character, harry
Ailsa Bennett Thank you, you wonderful soul. This is beautiful.
Yes, omg..
This comment deserves the triwizard tournament cup🌟
Mieke Nieskens this response alone has made my day hahahaa
My sister is an author as well and she said that characters 'introduce' themselves to her. There's no way changing them or their names because this is just the way they are. I think this is a very nice little thing. :)
I guess you could say it was Way Past Your Bedtime when you filmed this, Carrie
oh my !!! thank you so much Carrie for using my drawing as your "today i look like this"
Carrie: Have i gone crazy?
"Afraid so Carrie, your absolutely bonkers. But i'll tell you a secret: all the best people are"
Oh my god I love you XD
Exactly
Always appreciate an Alice in Wonderland reference
Carrie you've done so well with All I Know Now and I can't wait to read On The Other Side... proud of you big sis x
***** Regarding the whole 'naming a character' thing, I FEEL EXACTLY THE SAME!!! I love how you put it into words, thanks Carrie!
OMG. Completely get you, they are real characters. I get that when I'm writing!!! THEY DO CHOOSE THEIR NAMES!!!!
-A,x
I was literally looking for this comment because I thought of you straight away when she started talking about her characters 😂😂
At 3:02, those are sold in the States as Bugles. They come in several flavors including: Original (plain), Chocolate Peanut Butter, Caramel, Nacho Cheese, Shrimp, and several others.

Ooooh cool. I may need to go to a cemetery sometime soon. XD

I do that too!
Same
Me too! Terrifies the life out of my other half when he sees it haha 😂

Honest to god, who doesn't

I know I should comment on your content, but (in line with your latest video!) I AM SO JEALOUS OF YOUR FIGURE
As I am writing a novel myself, I can relate to the naming struggles. Most of the time taken up each day is coming up with names for new characters
I really relate to the character naming thing! Once I've "chosen" a name for a character (or maybe the characters chose their own names), it becomes almost impossible for me to change it, like I would be breaking some secret law of nature! Also.. I really, really want that onesie
Love your videos! Wish mine were half as good as yours. I totally would love you to write a musical!
I have the same onesie, which I also got from Disneyland California! Love it 😊

I was OBSESSED with smash when I was younger, I had them so often I got sick. :D lovely video!
OMG! When you said Rachel I got so excited aha!
Any Americans think Smash look like Bugles dipped in chocolate? We should petition Bugle to make them haha
YES'!!!
Maria C YES exactly what I was thinking!! next time I get Bugles I'm dipping them in chocolate!
Maria C I remember there being chocolate and peanut butter Bugles a few years ago that were EXCELLENT. I don't know if they still make them, though.
Norway here: yes,yes they are exactly Bugles covered in chocolate :D Though we don't get Bugles here anymore :(

I've written four books, and no Carrie, I feel you! The names can't be changed once you pick them. They really do tell you. ;)
I am Norwegian, and smash is seriously the best thing ever! And Tom was in Norway in June☺️
It's definitely an audiobook that is the suprise
THERE IS NO CLICK WITH THE HOPEFUL SIGN IN THE ENDING. I THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE TRADITIONAL.
Sarah vonEgypt I forgot :( xxx
***** I forgive you.
Carrie you need to try pretzel m&ms.. THEYRE SO GOOD!
Just finished reading 'Dream a little dream' today, it is such a damn good book!
You're not weird :) I think it makes the characters all the more real xxx
Carrie are you in Les mis 12th August 2:30pm matinee???? Would like to know so I can visit stage door xx

Love you carrie❤️
I love that you post and talk about norwegian snacks =) It makes me kind of proud to be from Norway =) And yes we do have some great snacks....you tried the melkesjokolade ***** ... If i knew how I would send you some Tom.
It's way past my bed time... Oh I know I'll watch Carrie!
When I read your novel I will be imagining each character whispering their name into your ear as you write.
I have such trouble with character's names, and a lot of it comes from character naming themselves. When I'm lucky, it's "Hi, I'm Damien", and that's that. But mostly, it's "Hi, my name feels like this," and then I'm stuck trying to put letters into the shape of a name that a character has given me, and it's kind of like trying to solve a puzzle when you have no idea what the end result is supposed to look like, but you can always tell when you have it wrong. I have that onesie! It's soooo cosy!
Where did you get it? I would love one just like this
yes! the characters choose their own names too in my head. I sometimes write down every name i can think of but if I found the name, the character in my head would be like, 'no, don't write anymore. this is MY name'
Yeah it looks like you doing an audiobook I'm just exciting like you are love you so much xxx ❤
If there's an audiobook version I'll buy it!
WOAH IM SO EARLY Carrie this was amazing, ilysm :) xx
It's a year on the 6th July since MCBUSTED played the British summertime, I saw you there 😊

Yea! I'm early!! I've got all I know now and I can't wait to start reading it!! Also my maths teacher sounds like you so much!
Name a character Gary - ideally a dog :D
OMG, yes. There needs to be a character called Gary the dog.
OMG, yes. There needs to be a character called Gary the dog.
i name my characters by looking up "names that mean *insert one of their traits*" and i usually have a few letters in mind that i want the name to start out with
Smash is my fav! Omg! Im Norwegian Btw! Have you seen the smash minis comersials?
Those Smash things sound amazing.. Salty and sweet is a winning combination. :D
I usually give characters first names after film characters or famous people who I look up to
smahs is so goodXD I love them so muchXD
The character naming thing is so accurate O.O
How can someone be so cute?!? I don't understand how you do it!!!
I get the same thing with characters - so many of my characters have names I hate but I can't change them because they just fit now.

How are you wearing a onesie, it's boiling outside
To be fair, it was the middle of the night ;) xxx
IT WAS STILL BOILING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT haha
True! 😂 xxx
I love watching these. 5th comment never this early either. Love you carrie
I normally look at names' etimology, as I'm obsessed with lenguages, it's something fun. That way, I pick the names.
That doesn't sound stupid, I agree my characters pretty much name themselves too and it gets to a point where they seem to have a mind of their own.
