I began working hard to develop more faith and trust in The Lord Jesus Christ by reading my scriptures daily, feasting and pondering His word. Prayer, repentance and willingness to submit under His authority, and learning to love others has done miracles in me. Ever since I was Baptized 45 years ago I have been a trusting soul. I have been burned a couple of times and have wondered if “trusting” was a fault or a blessing. Thank you for helping me to realize that trusting folks is a blessing. I am not blind or foolhardy but I take people at face value. My mind said John Bennett at the same time you spoke his name.

Minute 00:30:20 was my favorite light bulb moment! The idea that our attributes can have both a positive and a negative like 2 sides of a coin. Wow! That opened up a lot of windows in my mind and gave me something to ponder on for several days now. It caused me to look inward. I usually immediately tune out when I hear a sports analogy, but this time I listened ,and not because it was incredible or especially because of the sports ,especially football! And yeah,I'm a guy ,just don't have the sports gene I guess. But,I listened and it's just what I needed to hear at this time ! So thank you! I listen to you and I think you do really talk alot,but you have a lot to say ! Its like when i teach quorum lessons ,I usually always go over the time I have ,and when I taught in Utah ,they would stay until wives started pulling out husbands ,but in Ca. They start walking out exactly at the end of the hour, it's sad to me,I almost wish I could come back to Cedar City. Thank you for your lessons .

At about 23 minutes in, the discussion about trust. My husband was called to be bishop less than a year ago, and I'm finding in this lesson that my husband's personality has some strong similarities to Joseph's. This discussion was very helpful to my understanding.
At about 36 minutes: God doesn't provide miracles where hard work can be done.
At about 52 minutes: "Everything happens for a reason" is a fallacy. God is an honorer of agency.
At about 1:39: As I read in someone else's comment, that's the best explanation of a dispensation that I've ever heard.
When you talked about Joseph Smith's life reminding us of Christ, it reminded me of how Moses' life was like that too. Moses 1:6 comes to mind.
I loved your way of looking at Joseph Smith more generously (toward beginning) through those difficult times when it did seem he lacked judgment and foresight (failed treasure hunt to Salem) along with Boyd K. Packer’s quote.
At about 00:50:00, I liked the whole “everything happens for a reason” concept, along with the coach in sports example. Even though I don’t have a clue about football, it made perfect sense. I’d never thought of that saying like that (that it’s like not taking responsibility for our actions).

45-55 minutes I really appreciate your explanation of us doing what we think is best, without everything being so scripted for us that we are afraid to go off the script, but that as we make our decisions to the best of our ability and go to the Lord, that He can work with us, even through our mistakes. Also, 1:05:00 where we are being asked to do more then before, and how applicable this is after General Conference ended yesterday.

I believe that everything happens for a reason, in that everything in our lives has meaning, including our sins.
2:16:56 what I think is trying to be described is…Joseph “grew out” of Jesus by Joseph becoming like Jesus (characteristics, attributes, work, words spoken when preaching). But also Jesus was able to manifest Himself & further His work through Joseph & Joseph’s mortal life. Likewise we all have a chance for us to become Christ’s shadow or apprentice & try to replicate His Divine attributes & do (as best as we can) what Christ did. Likewise, our deeds can manifest to other’s Christ’s presence is here on the earth.
I love your lessons. I have this question over this detail that Joseph lost most money through the falling of Kirtland Safety Society. I learned from Doctrine and Covenant Central teaching videos that Joseph put in $1310. Under the background of over a hundred thousand debt our church had at that time, the biggest loss from the KSS at an individual level is 1310, that means people would not lose much for the fall of KSS. Is that right? So KSS didn't cause much financial damage to the saints, in the hundred level for individuals. I acknowledge it is important money for them but would not destroy families. So the dissension is primarily due to lack of faith and trust? Another minor question is that where did Joseph get the 1310 to invest? What is his steward through the church to earn that? Thanks.

Hi Brother Halverson. In this episode you talk a lot about dispensation leaders from Adam down to Joseph. I am also curious about those who came to Joseph and Oliver in the Kirtland temple (Elias, Elijah, etc.). Is there any relation to these key holders who restored the keys to Joseph and the key holders of each dispensation?

The Lord uses people; John the Baptist, Joseph Smith to point to the alpha and omega.
John pointed to the future and Joseph pointed to the past. Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Okay SO I can’t not comment on the “everything happens for a reason” thing. Brother Halverson, I think you may want to re-evaluate your opinion on this. Ive thought about it in great depth and concluded that 1. If God is perfectly loving, and 2. Omnipotent and omniscient, as we believe as members of the church, then everything MUST happen for a reason. This does not mean that 1. We don’t have agency, or 2. That God is responsible for our wrong actions, BUT that our agency is forever within his divine control. We can think of our agency as “perfectly contained” by God’s influence. We see this in all the times in the scriptures when God intervenes if someone’s agency is about to conflict with His will and His imperative purposes. Is this not a perfect, divine control of our agency? To give it to us but also to make sure there is always His divine meaning in our lives? This is why it can be such a comforting belief, even for a sinner: We are in His hands. Not only when we just “do the right thing” but also when our human fallings and failings inevitably lead us to walk the path drunkenly. Why can’t God be both the coach AND, to an extent, the scriptwriter? I believe God isn’t to blame for our sins but that He does let them happen. If everything is in His power, then so are our sins. It’s His perfection that lets Him perfectly safeguard our agency while making sure His will is done, even in unseen ways. If I am born without a susceptibility to alcohol, it’s unlikely that I will become an alcoholic. This is in Gods power. If someone wants to kill someone else but they’re not meant to die yet, this is in God’s power. Basically everything is in God’s power, including our agency, however, He, in His perfection, doesn’t control our agency, but rather contains and, if we let Him, refines it.
Final thought:
The real counterfeit is believing that meaninglessness exists. But thankfully, if we study the beauty and intricacy of the butterfly effect (that even something as small as a butterfly can cause a chain of events that change the world), we can come to the comforting conclusion that nothing is meaningless. Yes, some things matter more than others, but, as Lehi taught, there must be opposition in all things (even the darkness has some meaning), and everything in existence has meaning because it exists, especially us, Gods children.
P.s. I believe I understand why the church doesn’t teach that everything happens for a reason. Saying it this way a lot of people can take it wrong, especially if they’re not into/good at philosophy. However, the church has taught things that support this view, only said in different ways (i.e. President Monson: “there are no coincidences”)
May I share something that will give you perhaps a new perspective on this chapter off Isaiah? How?

At about 1:22:00 I thought I heard you say that God cannot look upon sin, as if He cannot bear to see it, and that He cannot see you clearly in sin and therefore has to "feel" after you. I cannot believe that is true. I believe God's omniscence is not diminished by my sin. I believe he sees all and knows all always. I thought the scripture meant God cannot look upon sin and allow it in the least measure, not that He cannot see it. He can see it, and He can not allow it in his Kingdom, so we need to repent and be cleansed by the atonement so He can let us in. Is it not so?
I think everything DOES happen for a reason but that doesn't mean God had anything to do with it. Sometimes the reason is the actor exercised his agency unwisely.
Why wouldn’t God be in charge of the meaning in our lives? If anything is “out of God’s control” He ceases to be God.
Thank you for what you stated shortly after the 47:00 minute mark. I never liked the phrase "everything happens for a reason." I like the example you gave. I always thought this phrase makes it seem like God orchestrating things. I would ask, "Everything happens for a reason....child abuse both physical and sexual? rape? serial killings? I never liked this phrase and what it implies about God. I appreciate you calling it a counterfeit truth because like you said it removes agency and turns us into robots, plus implies God wants these evil things to happen to people.
I think it was in "Hidden Bloodlines " that they stated that Joseph Smith was a direct decendant of Jesus. That would ring true when you said Joseph came out of Jesus or maybe that's what you meant.

No, he has done much, but no man can even come close to Christ. Although I revere Joseph Smith and all
prophets called of God, I do not put them in the category of our one and only Savior.
