This is why you need "Writer-Industry-Filmmaker" Friends! I'm following your journey for sure! Wishing you all of the luck and more!!!
I've used WeScreenplay on four scripts, several times on one of the scripts. The feedback was good -- the scripts have done better in contests. Here is my take:
- Your timing is good if you are interested in sending it out to a contest (or two) this year.
- Feedback depends on the person assigned to read your stuff. Some folks are better at giving good feedback than others.
- A new set of eyes is worth the money
- It is solid progress
- Sometimes I use them as a crutch -- it is easier to pay someone to read it then get out there and hustle to get it made. That may just be my problem!
Great job getting it out there!
Just want to say I respect the heck out of your attitude, hustle and honesty.
Im proud of you. The first video I saw of yours you were visitng Overton & Colonial. I dont remeber you but I went to the old Colonial too. I grew up On New Willow off Getwell. I went to Colonial between 1990 -1993.. Hope your writing & screen plays class great for you.
Wow, great ---glad you could get some productive feedback👍
I sooooo agree with you-- about NOT choosing to hit the viewer over the head with info. (I refer that to; writing as if your audience is stupid). I appreciate your videos, but I'm still not a believer that every reviewer know what they're talking about. It's like a song,... if I listen to Pop Music, giving my opinion on a Country song wouldn't be all that credible. The long short is--- it's just another stranger's opinion. And unless that stranger has the ability to produce (etc.,) my work-- chasing reviews is not important to me anymore. BTW: Kenny sounds like a great friend. He gave you the best advice... and it was free. 😅 Best wishes Brother. I just subscribed. 😎
Congrats on the positive response! My dad is 88 and in senior care, so I can relate to the themes of Azalea. Looking forward to see where it takes you! I also used WeScreenplay for my script, and after getting over my initial disappointment of them not being blown away by the brilliance of my writing, I found the notes both encouraging and instructive. But I am finding it a lot harder to do the rewrite than I thought I would. There’s a feeling that I already did the best I could on the script and can’t take it any further. The trick, I guess, is pushing past that. And shout out to Brooklyn! Lived in Prospect Heights 20 years ago. Go Nets!
Thoroughly enjoyed this update! Thanks for sharing the feedback and words of encouragement from your friend. I’m inspired and excited to get back to my writing. Can’t wait for the next writing update video!
Gonna have to get around to giving WeScreenplay a go.
Glad they gave you food for thought, 👍🏼😉
Man listen jay you got the juice!
Oooh I wanna read this script!
Hey Jay, I also struggle with loglines, I saw a video of Matt Stone and Trey Parker discussing their writing process and how they use it for log lines, and its blown my mind, simply using 'therefore' and 'but' in-between sentences/beats of the logline. Great movie title by the way, good luck on the second draft, peace out.
Yeah... let me know how it goes... I hope you keep pursuing your dream, brutha. I submitted a script to the Blacklist and that was interesting. The feedback was decent but not great. It's just too short plus, I kind of think the reader missed some points. got an overall 6 with the setting at a 7 but At this point, I would like to submit script #2 and maybe see where that goes. I just submitted a pilot to the Page Awards. We hopeful writers gotta stick together.
I understand why a pro screenwriter feels the need to turn over several drafts of a script within months. In my view as a producer and writer, I prefer to put each draft in a drawer and come back to it several months later. Why? I don't like giving early drafts to other people because I don't want their comments to influence my approach to the script. I don't want to use other people's ideas as a development tool because they don't understand what I'm attempting to achieve. Plus, most of their ideas and comments are superficial thoughts because they don't have the time to really study the script.
So, I prefer to be my own fresh eyes by coming back after several months to read and write a fresh draft. Also, I prefer to do this over a year or two years before I feel that I've taken my best shot and I'm now ready for external feedback. At this stage, I'm clear about my intentions for the script and I can take feedback and see how it fits into my vision, etc.
With this comment, I'm trying to describe the difference between using feedback as a script development tool and using feedback to confirm that my intentions for the script are coming across to the reader.
