Mom & Pop Tam are high status in the Alliance social structure. There is great debate about how much they are willing to risk that, even for their children.
It's also true that people with that much to lose will ignore anything that might undermine their position (like the guy in charge of the Chernobyl safety test that went rather awry).
I love seeing River dancing in this episode - it's so uplifting, that release from the demons that plague her. The actress, Summer Glau is an accomplished accomplished dancer in various schools, primarily ballet. And doing it in combat boots rocks!!
Ah! That do make sense, with those legs swinging around like nothing!! I originally kept a lot more of that scene in because i thought it was awesome, but unfortunately i had to make some cuts. I LOVED the combats boots with the more girly outfit!
My own personal theory is that River's parents knew exactly what was going on at the Academy. They may have in fact have been part of a breeding experiment to create someone like River. The villagers should have at least tried to test if she is really a witch. But unfortunately, they did not have a large set of scales and only heard of ducks by rough description.
the witch "tests" i'm most familiar with kill the innocent as well as the guilty, with only the manner of death distinguishing the two, so not much of an improvement over what simon and river did get.

The scenes of Jayne stealing their stuff and later returning it was added to the final cut as the show's run time was short. Those 2 scenes were written in a very short time and Adam Baldwin learned them in about 1/2 hour. The scene between River and Simon..."You found me broken" "Everything I have is right here!" Gets me every time. The scene between Mal and Simon..."Why'd you come back?" "You're on my crew" "But you don't even like me, why'd you come back? "You're on my crew, why we still talking about this? Chow's in ten. No need to dress." The face acting is excellent (especially Sean's smile) .

There’s a quiet bit of metaphor going on in this one. River makes the comment about how the cows forgot how to be themselves while they were in space. River has also forgotten how to be herself; in many ways, she seems like she may have forgotten how to act human. Remember in episode 1 how Simon said that “everything came as naturally to her as breathing does to us”, including dance? Like the cows, when River sees something familiar (like the dancing) she, at least for a moment, is able to remember herself.
"In many ways, she seems like she may have forgotten how to act human." I wonder if that's a possible explanation why she often doesn't bother wearing shoes.
Go back and watch that last shot, at the dinner table. They're passing a basket of rolls. Jayne takes one, passes the basket. River steals it off his plate. He catches her, but rather than smacking her or something, he just reaches for another. Their status has changed in his mind. She's sorta family, a little sister who can be mischevious, play a prank and not be punished. Or maybe she knows he took their stuff, so he's gotta let her do it.
About how the kidnappers knew he was a doctor there was a rustle in the bushes by the cattle, after the hill folk saw Serenity land, which is right when Simon and Mel are talking and Mel says: "I'm starting to think you have a little too much time on your hands Doctor."
I've seen some people get angry with Mal for leaving Simon and River, not everyone gets that he's just prioritising the injured soldier in front of him over the pair lost in the woods, so to speak. But he's still a soldier, so there was no way he was leaving them behind for good. I do like how Book says "It's good to be home" after being patched up by the Alliance doctors. There's a parallel with that lady in the village told Simon "It's the way of life in my findings that journeys end when and where they want to, and that's where you make your home", which Simon firmly rebukes "This isn't our home", to which she responds, "If it isn't here, where is it?", and you catch Simon pausing to think before it cuts to the next scene. And at the end, when Mal tells him that he came back for him because "you're on my crew", you catch him smile. I'd like to think that's when he decided where home was for him.
Seeing the difference between the rich of last episode verses the poor of this one, especially during the dance scene, brings to mind something similar in the movie Titanic. After having a fancy meal with Rose and her upper class friends, Jack invites her to what he called "a real party."

The original meaning of "pastor" was "shepherd," so it isn't a big stretch that, this far in the future, the language would have changed in this way. A related word is "pastoral," where the first definition in the dictionary refers to shepherds and sheep.
I'm certain that the town's patriarch was responsible for the death of his predecessor. River was about to expose him. She knew that he had been I'll, but was getting better. The only way he could have died, would've been because of the current patriarch.
A shepherd is definitely a person who cares for sheep. It is also sometimes used in a religious sense for a person who cares for the spiritual needs of a “flock” of people.
Although, to my knowledge, it's only an official title, akin to Reverend, in Firefly.
The association with Judeo-Christianity with shepherds is made clear in the 23rd Psalm: "The Lord is my Shepherd."
Also in John 10:11: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
"Pastor" is derived from the Latin for shepherd. The meaning is intentional for the reasons you all mentioned.

Oh, and he was in Bad Neighbors with Seth Rogan and Dave Franco. But honestly i think he is most likely known for being a hearthrob.
@@JustsMyles15 wow you know his whole career hah hah Some actors are very recognizable but others are far less. I heard his brief cameo on Firefly was his first TV job.
The witch trials did a lot more than hanging unfortunately. This month is a good time to look into it more if you're curious. I grew up in Rhode Island not far from Salem. This is a fun episode, I think you will be surprised by the next one. I'm anxiously waiting for you to get to episode 8.
Firefly episode with a witch trial? Just in time for Halloween!
Big damn heroes.
Memorable line right there!!
I have a handmade pewter hat pin that says "Big Damn Hero". I wear it on my headgear, when I dress in traditional Scottish garb.
That is awesome!!
Grey cat!!! 😲
He is the channel's mascott at this point!! 😝
@JustsMyles15 tell him I love him.
One does NOT insult Serenity, when Kaylee is around!
You are single? Who the heck would turn down such an intelligent cute young woman like you? Must have some sort of brain trauma to do that.
You might like the AC/DC hit Big Balls it's Hilarious.
The real question is... Does River weighs the same as a duck?
Build a bridge out of her??
"...I got better"
All of us: "Tell me who he is!!!"
Whedon: "No."
🤣
The original meaning of "pastor" was "shepherd," so it isn't a big stretch that, this far in the future, the language would have changed in this way. A related word is "pastoral," where the first definition in the dictionary refers to shepherds and sheep.
You are super beautiful. Deal with it.
LOLL 😂🕺
"I've been asking for his backstory since episode 2!"
Get used to disappointment.
:)
Bad things happen to people who are mean to Kaylee.
Or Serenity. Because being mean to Serenity IS being mean to Kaylee. 🙂
Some say those chicken wings remain uneaten to this day. I know, it's a tragedy.
I'm certain that the town's patriarch was responsible for the death of his predecessor. River was about to expose him. She knew that he had been I'll, but was getting better. The only way he could have died, would've been because of the current patriarch.
