Glad you enjoyed a nice sci-fi Ball! This episode is a great example of very good TV writing to develop characters and establish world-building, without forcing the longer plotlines to advance, and entertaining the audience without leaving them frustrated that the main story is not advancing. It's the kind of episode that would really help to make it a great show over many seasons. Which, as I've always said, would have been better in streaming than network TV but paved the way that it could definitely be the type of TV that people would like to watch.
The show didn't last long enough to tell us about it, so it's not really a spoiler to let you know. The same company that made that canned food that River tore the labels off of also were behind her torture. She freaks out a few times when she sees the logo, but nothing really comes of it before the show got cancelled unfortunately.
Mal was rude because he was carrying heavy stuff and they were ignoring his suggestion that they keep moving. Still, he was rude to Kaylee. You don't get to be rude or mean to Kaylee, if you are, karma's gonna getcha! And Atherton Wing called Serenity a piece of garbage. That's another no-no - karma's getting him too!
Yes!! Kaylee is too sweet to insult but you can see that he regretted it right away, and him bringing her to the ball 😭 but like you say, of all people, you are not rude to Kaylee!! I love when Mal said that he doesnt respect her job much but he respect HER, whereas Atherton respected her job, but not her. I dont like him sayin that she's a whore but he does care for her as a person and that says a lot!
@@ernesthakey3396 With all due respect, I disagree. He had just found out Inara was gonna be with a client for a few days and was sore about it. Simon isn't afraid of space. As was pointed out in a previous episode, he's afraid of trusting the suit knowing what would happen if the suit fails Given that his first experience with wearing one would have killed him since he was wearing it incorrectly, it's understandable why he feels that way.
I think his reaction to looking out toward space does suggest he is at least uncomfortable with space itself. Particularly when contrasted with River's look of awe and wonder. It seems like a very similar reaction to someone with a fear of heights look out over an edge: "Oh, that makes me uncomfortable, I'm just going to look away and try to not think of what I just saw". Certainly his lack of trust in the suit doesn't help, but I think it is more than that.

Hi Myles. During the vid call near the beginning, Atherton signs off addressing Inara as "baobei." The matching usage in English would be calling her something like "beloved" or "darling."

Notwithstanding the number of people who are going to tell you that River pulled off the labels because of Blue Sky, it makes at least as much sense if it is a commentary on the labels people wear and how they should be freed of them.
So, Jayne is talking about needing a diversion, then River shows up and distracts everyone. Unfortunately, that included the crew. Mal also gets into what he means when he calls Inara a whore, and it doesn't really have to do with having sex for money.

This episode shows a major theme of _Firefly_ : that frontiers have better moral values than civilizations. The inequality and oppression of this planet's backwards civilization is on display at the stuffy ball. Atherton is a privileged dandy who uses his upper-class training in fencing and the duelling code to legally kill anyone he takes a dislike to. The only reason Mal isn't killed is that Inara distracted him. His treatment of Inara reveals that, like Japanese Geishas, the Companion institution exists to protect upper-class sex workers from exploitation from a sexist society that considers women property. Compare that with Mal's frontier values. Mal considers women equal; that is why he dislikes Inara's work. He cannot kill a disarmed man on the ground, even if that man was trying to murder him.
Yes! And he told Simon that: if i would to kill you, you would he awake and armed. I was too excited about the ball and the gowns and Mal&Inara to notice the double meaning throughout the episode but this is brilliant! I always saw that planet as being in between the frontier and civilization and embodying the bad points of both. It appears to be a former frontier world that got wealthy and entered its Nouveau riche phase. They are doing fancy balls and are giving each other fancy titles but most of them are first or second generation wealthy. Their system also seems to allow slavery.
If that's the show's message, it does it poorly. Every single frontier planet they go to has a megalomaniacal despot running it, from the guy keeping indentured servants in boxes and not paying them to the guy artificially suppressing the desert planet's tech level while killing whores. We're constantly told that as soon as you get past Alliance control, society breaks down into a might makes right shit storm.
