I feel like there's an important point people miss about this movie. While it seems like Jesse (Elle Fanning) is the star of the movie and everything revolves around her, at the end we see this movie is actually about Sarah. Jesse is just the competition in her way that she needs to get rid of, and in the end she emerges victorious. The ruthless villain willing to do anything ends up winning, as often is the case in real life. Another thing is, people say this movie is simply about the modeling industry and "instagram culture" when I see it more as applying to any cut-throat world such as the business or corporate world where others are seen as competitors and obstacles in the way to success. The cannibalism is just an allegory of this IMO, as she literally "ate" her competition. Brilliant movie.

Loved this movie, and I mostly agree, but there’s also a major part of this movie not solely focused on competition, but about beauty and its relationship to value. So many ways to analyze the interplay of those two ideas, but this film at least attempts to surface many.
i dont bileave it is true. So far everyone except these 4 girls acted as normal humans do, so for me it's safe to assume that this mess is gonna be found, and there is no room for sarah to wiggle. I interpret this as a showcase of how modern industry drives models crazy and they starve to death or do other sick things, as Jesse pointed out before her murder. Of course same can be true not only for modern industry, as you said

Oh really? I rewatched and saw a lot of minimal shots. Of course not all of the shots are, that would look ridiculous. If you don't see it though don't worry your head! I saw it just yesterday. It's not only visually stunning. It's truly an experience.
Finally, Refn managed to merge his crafty direction with a layered and worthy story, he now has something to tell. A deep look at the dark core of what makes us human and to our beauty obsessed society.
People complain about the lack of character development, but the movie instead of forcing the characters to deliver, it's just faithful to them. People in the fashion business are portrayed just the way they are, empty. Souless. Merciless. Savages.
And the richest story is not in the words, because just like in a world where everything that matters it's is looks, the movie tells a story that way, with images and visuals.
It's perfect. I can't wait for NWR next project.
Ps. On a side note, Elle it's incredible. So I enjoyed to see Keanu on that kind of role, hope to see more of him experimenting.

Watched this movie at 15 at 18 I moved out to the city to try and get into industry as a makeup artist and I’ve never related to a movie so much in my life. It’s a scary place jealousy can get you killed
I just saw this movie yesterday on a whim and was blown away. It's crazy how many negative reviews this got. I started it with no expectations and finished it realizing I had just watched a MASTERPIECE. Jaw-dropping visuals and soundtrack that makes every other movie look dull in comparison, the lack of dialogue is done purposefully as the visuals and the actor's expressions and body language do most of the talking. Multiple layers of meaning and symbolism throughout. This movie is a work of art, and anyone who thinks it's bad simply doesn't understand what they are watching.

One of the eeriest, creepiest, darkest movies i have ever seen. This disturbed the shit out of me i gagged at the end. Seriously a MUST see for all the horror fans out there. If you are not a big fan of horror, do not watch this movie, you have been warned.

Nicolas Winding Refn is one of the best directors of the 21st century, his ability to tell simplistic stories in a way that engages you is amazing. The visuals, the music, the framing, the acting all go towards telling the story without dialogue. the general public will hate this film as it doesnt have simplistic writing to help them understand whats happening but those who appreciate film will see this as an instant classic.

This film is superb on so many levels. Find one, then watch again and again to unwrap layers.

Suspiria is one of the most colourful films I've ever seen and that's definitely a horror movie. Horror movies don't have to be dark and bland all the time, horror directors also like to splash a bit of their style into their movies too.
Its just Refn's style. The director is color blind. He prefers to capture colors that have strong contrast too.
Do not say that, that phrase will disturb me for a while, as much as Are You My Mommy from Dr. Who.
But it's not a horror movie. It is a great movie, though.
The Neon Demon was an immersive and mesmerizing theater experience that seamlessly integrated the best soundtrack in recent memory.
Anyone going on about how this looks like Black Swan, that the only thing interesting are the visuals, and this is not a horror movie at all etc. Unfortunately none of these are the aims of Refn, if you have watched some of his earlier works ( and i'm not talking about Drive ) like the Pusher trilogy or Valhalla rising you'd see that his movies is what you make it to be, there is no clear message, he doesn't hand over plots Hollywood style like that, so it's not for everyone.
He tries to go down to those unexplicable uncharted bizarre and grotesque corners of human mind. There is no one character in this movie whom you can relate to, it's a showdown of the weird. And if you don't like how sexual theme's are portrayed you can always go and watch Big Mike XXL and 50 Shades of Grey.

YES, thank you. Plus, a lot of people don't seem to realize that Black Swan itself wasn't particularly original. It was basically a live action reimagining of Perfect Blue. Neon Demon is its own thing entirely, especially once the third act rolls in.

Just watched the movie. It's darker than I imagined. Love the visual, but i can't feel any sympathy for the characters, i don't really care if they die or eat each other like do whatever you want. Segmented movie. It tried too hard to be pretentious.
It is a methaphorical film. Film that explores certain situation or idea then sends a personal message about it.
I don't know… pretentious is quite a specific word, and the story was pretty straightforward, and the point it was trying to make was clear. I don't really see it falling under "pretentious". I think it looked beautiful and it wasn't really too gore-y either, considering the topics it covers.
I think it's a pretty solid film. Having dislikable characters and symbolism doesn't immediately make a movie pretentious.
This obviously isn't a straight film. You can't take everything that you see or that happens at face value. But the premise is simple, show the ugly side of the obsession with esthetics in our culture while reveling in that very same thing cinematically. Similar to what Harmoney Corine did with Spring Breakers. Brilliant.

I don't care if it's a "Metaphorical film", ANY FILM has to have good characters for us to feel more emotion in the movie. "Metaphorical" is not an excuse for poor character development.

+Relle M. It's out June 24th in the US and July 8th internationally. Also, please DO see it in theaters. This looks like one that deserves to be experienced on the big screen, even if just for the beauty of it alone. Might help if you watch one of Winding Refn's previous films, particularly Drive. They will absolutely help you get more of a sense of what kind of movie this will be.

It's a minimalist horror not a straight up horror so your not going to get gore and jump scares

"Only God Forgives" is literally about godlike creature walking among men, cutting sinners with a sword. It's not that hard to follow.
