  • This week we brought you a new "Uncommitted" series on how Oregon has effectively criminalized involuntary psychiatric care due to dwindling beds, court orders and a major limits on civil commitment. Here's what you had to say about it.

The history of Western State is really interesting, I did my internship there. A long time ago it was it's own little village. Farms and orchards, bakery, animal husbandry, etc. Everyone worked to their capabilities. They found purpose and pride in their work supporting themselves with their own hands. But of course that was dismantled to divert money elsewhere. You need to be willing to pay people to supervise and teach the patients. Now they drug you and sit you down in front of a TV.
It's a beautiful campus and still has some of the village shops scattered about. If they still allow tours it's worth going to learn about working farm style, mental health facilities. Also it's CHEAPER THAN GOING TO PORTUGAL.

If Oregon goes all in on fixing a problem you can be certain that it will grow exponentially
