    About Sweet Briar Farm
We are a small farm located in Central/Northern Michigan. We farm every inch of our 6 acres. We breed Registered Dairy Goats, Dexter Cattle, and Heritage Hogs. Clean healthy food is important to us and we like to produce the majority of our food on the farm and we grow and raise enough to sell to local customers. Producing our own food also means we forage for wild edibles such as mushrooms and tap our maple trees in the spring to make maple syrup. In 2019 we added honeybees to the farm and have had as many as 30 active hives producing honey for us.
Our goats include Nubian goats, Mini Nubians, Fainting Goats, and Nigerian Dwarf goats.
Our Heritage Hogs include: Registered Kunekune Pigs and Hereford pigs!

Fresh goat milk is just good milk. There’s no funkiness to it, it’s just tasty wholesome food.

I'd wondered how it would be to milk a fainting goat. The best milker I've ever had (in about forty years of owning dairy goats) was half Boer and half Oberhasli. She was a big girl, pushing 200 lbs. (though admittedly she was also fat, because she hogged more than her share of the feed), and peaked out at almost two gallons of milk per day. The interesting thing was that her 15 lbs of milk was as rich as, if not richer than, the milk from the Kinder goats I was also milking -- and they tend to have very rich milk because of their Pygmy ancestry. The one down side was that the Boer heritage gave her thicker skin than dairy goats have (Boers were bred to have thick skin for resistance to insect bites and thorns); this meant the skin of her teats was also thicker, which reduced the milk holding capacity of her teats, so each squirt gave less milk. So it took longer to milk her. But I would absolutely do it again, if I could find another doe like her.

I replied it three times and still didn't catch what he said you should milk next 😊 I'm going to slow it down maybe I get it then. Neat to see the difference in goat milk per breed.

If i were to get goats I think I would try fainting goats first. mostly known as a meat goat, My research into goats revealed they are supposed to be the least problematic for escaping. I would be interested in a pros and cons video on each of your goat breeds. Hello from Manitoba Canada and, Thanks for the entertaining content.

      That's a good idea!
I agree myotonic goats are excellent breed for first time goat owners. They’re also more resistant to parasites than commercial meat and dairy breeds.

Looks like she’s good on the stand but I don’t get the myotonic goat thing. They were used as sacrificial goats for ranchers to protect their other goats/sheep. Essentially people continue to breed a genetic defect. 3 cups of milk? I just don’t understand but glad you enjoy them!

We really only did this video for a comparison. We sold all the fainters.

Fainting goats are a meat breed breed of goat just like Boers and Spanish goats. Fainters have some of the best parasite resistance, they can’t jump fences, and their carcass quality is equivalent to Boers. I agree the myotonia is an odd thing to select for in a breed but as long as you provide adequate predator protection they should be very productive healthy animals. -Kelsey

Well let’s be honest here…… Nobody in the US is breeding them for meat. You and I both know they are bred for novelty :)
