Reznor is well known for being into Industrial music, even going as far as to call the book The Industrial Culture Handbook his guidebook.
Nah, I think he just isn't a huge fan of rock as he is of lots of other genres. I think he means that, it wasn't his place to save rock, because he didn't want to, because he didn't care about it.
