  • I've been boating for about 3 years now and I've owned two different boats. I thought it would be a good time to put together a list of some of the items I've purchased that have helped make boating a better/easier and safer experience for me. The items are listed in no perticular order.
    - Life Jackets are a must have. My favourite is my Hutchwilco Fisher Pro 150N. Perfect to add a bit more storage space to a small boat.
    - VHF Radio. I have both a wired in Icom IC-M200 Fixed Mount Marine VHF Radio and as wireless Cobra HH350 Floating Handheld VHF Radio Black.
    - Flare and smoke signals. I have RFD Powerboat Flare Pack.
    - A personal locator beacon (PLB) is something I think you should never be without when boating or doing other outdoor activities. I have a Ocean Signal RescueME PLB1.
    - A first aid kit comes in very handy on any boat.
    - Ropes are always needed. I have a main rope that is 10m long and a second 2m rope.
    - An oar or paddle just in case. I have Oceansouth 2-Part Telescopic Paddle 750mm-1200mm.
    - Dry bags are great for storage.
    - Always have a more layers of clothing incase it gets cold or you get wet.
    - Something to bail with. Also really handy for cleaning etc.
    - A fish finder with built in charts/maps or charts/maps on your phone (a proper fish finder/chart plotter is better than your phone though).
    - An anchor to match your boat. I have a 10kg danforth style anchor with 3m on chain and 50m of rope attached.
    - I've made a home made toilet with a bucket and a pool noodle. Perfect for when females are onboard and need to be a number 1.
    - A good pair of pliers comes in very handy for general use and for fishing use. Having a built in cutter for braid fishing line is very helpful.
    - A knife is a good general thing to have and is needed when fishing. I just have a cheap built knife and it does the job.
    - I have a Leatherman Wingman Multi-Tool with Nylon Sheath on the boat which is really helpful incase anything needs to be repaired while on the water.
    - A good pair of polarised sunglasses does wonders for making things more comfortable when out on the water.
    - A roll of duct tape for quick repairs or worst case a keep bandage.
    - Phone apps to help with weather. I really like Windy and the Coast Guard App here in NZ.
    - I always keep my outboard and trailer in top condition with regular maintenance.
    - A bait board can be a bit of a luxury but is so helpful for all sorts of needs. Cooking, cutting bait, making coffee, filleting fish etc.

Thanks mate! It’s good to be back. Been trying to film a bit but weather and lack of fish has been making it hard. How are things going for you with the boat share? Thats a cool set up. Thanks for watching. Thomas

More of what I consider an essential upgrade rather than equipment would be a second battery on the boat. You can do it.simply enough with a battery switch to select battery 1, battery 2, or both but that requires you to monitor battery levels and switch them in and out manually to keep both charged. A better system is to use an Automatic Charge Relay (I use one by "Blue Sea Systems" called "Add a Battery" but there's cheaper ones that do the same thing) which will detect if a battery's low and connect it to charge when the motor's running. That also lets you use one battery just for starting the motor and the other as a "house battery" so you can run the VHF, sonar, music, lights, anchor winch, etc all you like without worrying about the motor not starting due to a flat battery.

Good call and thanks for all the technical info. My engine does have an emergency pull start option which is nice for peace of mind also. Thanks for that and thanks for watching. Thomas

All you need is a 12 foot tinny with a good used 20hp outboard and 5gal tank. And a 5lt water container, your rod a reel and some bait. Thats all you need. $3000 all up including the boat. Oh and a $50 lifejacket.

Haha get amongst it! I do think some of the safety gear I mentioned is very needed to keep us boaters safe though and keep others safe by not having to come and save our butts. Thanks heaps for watching. Thomas.

That’s a great idea. My engine actually has a pull start kit built in just in case so I sort of cover that one off another way. Thanks heaps for the great addition. Thomas
