Swapping to a bicep leash, even as a beginner/intermediate was a game changer for me. Less tangling, less drag, less interference. I can't believe they're not standard, even on beginner boards. Just make sure to get the right size.

bicep leashes shoud have more length and less of the tight coil IMO / I use these old school design when the coils aren't bunched up tight / also if you have a wetsuit on it is good to use the XL bicep leash

There are certain models with a longer coil, but the main idea is for the leash to stay out of the way when riding, so a tighter coil is preferred by most riders.
