Our Story to Tell
Imagine how the place looked like when the various aristocratic families lived there. There are thousands of castles in Germany that are in this dilapidated state, especially in eastern Germany. You did a huge favor to the owner by showing his castle in your video because you contributed a tiny bit to the restauration of that building.

I love stuff like this. The big, perfectly curated and sanitized tourist destinations bore me to no end. _This_ puny little mansion is where you can see, feel and touch 500+ years of history.

I have already spent many hours in the castle and know every corner there, in 2006 I helped to re-cover the castle roof, it is a great place that needs every donation! Thanks for the great video!

Must be strange to sleep in a castle that is more than 250 years older than the country you came from. I really love that you appreciate the history behind it and not just think of it as 'old'.
And it's not an old castle for us. :)

@@norbertderiro9458 The United States declared their independence in 1776. The host said something about 1520. So the castle is at least 250 years older than the country they came from.
Such a Cinderella castle can also become a life's work. The money was just enough for 1/3 of the roof, 1/3 of the roof is still tight and the rest already has an emergency roof. The interior restoration will also cost a lot of time and money.
And the question always arises as to how the old can be preserved and at the same time meet current requirements.
No water, heating or electricity, everything has to be completely redone.
Often this can only be done if money comes in through tourism or if it is so important that the state gives a subsidy.

This is great - so many of these older castles and palaces are just left to rot, great to see someone trying to keep the building alive by renting out parts of it. That is a really neat idea.
👍 not only for the video but also for the owner who showed you more than what normal people would get to see. Its obviously different in architecture but this "worn" appearance gave the whole place a "Longbourn" vibe (Bennet family house from Pride and Prejudice). Awesome tour.

I couldn’t sleep there, you’re braver than I am! I just worked in a castle where I think I had a visitor from another realm… I will tell that story myself, soon. I will sleep anywhere! I don't believe in ghosts. As long as the bed is warm and comfy, I'll be out like a light.

Hi Princess Cinderella(Willa), Marissa and Tanner, what a Super Vlog. We LIKE it! We have here in Hechingen the Castle Hohenzollern, these is also beautiful especially if there are Festivals and Winterwonderland with Christmas Market. The Castle is i think from 12 Century and the Owner are Princess and Prince of Preußen. We like this Place. In a Circle around the Castle, you will find some interesting Things. We living around 50 km away from the Castle. Stay healthy.

THis is so cool, thank you for this very interesting video. It's cool the owner opens it up to save it. It would take literally tens of millions to restore the whole thing. You could make such a great hotel/restaurant out of the castle.

Wow, interesting! There is a special ambience... the doors, the murals, and then the garden. You can recognize the old rooted habits, routine or even the way of thinking of its former occupants.
Well, I think this castle is living its last years, the attempt to preserve it, is more an unwilling, innocent goodbye gesture :))
Oh my gosh! How neat! Grand Adventurers! At first I thought this was the old von Thungen (spelling?) castle. I was there in 1986 while I was in the Army and visited Rothenburg also. I am still trying to get more info about what happened to the von Thungen family. I was also wondering about the history of THIS castle, past ownership etc. I loved the video and your presentation and presence (and of course, Willow) so I subscribed! Thanks!
Awesome place...try to imagine what the monthly upkeep might be to keep this place from falling apart.
re-building a normal house roof will cost approx 25.000€ In the beginning 1/3 of the Castles roof looks new, 1/3 in bad condition and 1/3 demolished. I think to renew the last 2/3 of the castles roof will cost approx 200.000+ € when they are allowed to use modern material. In case the castle is under monument protection rule they have to rebuild it in old style with old style materials (like handcrafted roof tiles instead of industrial ones) what easily can double or triple the price while the agency for historical monuments will pay a part of the costs and maybe give you via the KfW (German govermental credit institute for rebuilding and development with lowest intrest credits) a low intrest credit.
But yes a complete renvation of this castle (preserving inside, repair the outside) will easily costs a few million Euros.
I love the history, but it definitely looks like something out of Ghost Adventures! I’ll be looking for you on the Travel Channel. 👻 The cleanliness of the grounds and friendliness of the owner are so typical of 🇩🇪. Great stuff!

The upkeep for a castle is horrendous these days, so your 100 euros a night will definitely go to a good cause.
If you're ever near the Pied Piper city of Hamelin, which is not far from where I live, go spend a night at Schaumburg Castle. Beautifully restored rooms and stunning scenery, including a spectacular view over the Weser valley, but still - roughly - in that kind of price range.

Such a cool place! Didn't know about Schloss Höllrich, but it seems like a really fun place to stay. And what a great idea to rent out the rooms using AirBnb! It sure helps with creating some income while he renovates the rest of the house. I'd really love to have a chat with the owner about the history of the whole thing. Did you ask him if this was his family's castle? Or did he buy it?
The way it is constructed is very similar to my 300 yr old farmhouse in Thuringia. The walls look exactly the same (half-timbered with clay/straw mix inside). There are a lot of those old houses all over Germany, and for me, it was pretty normal to live in a house like this. It's great for playing hide and seek! :)
He bought it years ago. We thought it was a great idea as well to put it on AirBnb!

Depends... you can grt very old places in Germany for very little if you can prove that you are ready and able to upkeep and/or restore them.

seems like he set up 45 qm2 for living and renovate the rest from the money he gets from the airbnb.

Oh, there is still a lot of work to do until the buildings will "shine" again. I hope that the owner will make it before everything comes down.
It ll need a fortune to restore this place. At least they put on a new roof over one building. But imagine how much it would be worth when in excellent shape. Where is it by the way?

It would be nice if the castle could be at least renovated to a degree where it is not in danger of collapsing - but such a thing is incredibly expensive

He is. But he probably needs money and time. I once owned a partly delapidated house. We put in more than the purchase price. And it still was not perfect. The best way is to involve the state if you don't have deep pockets yourself. Starting with millions if you want accomplish significant progress.
@@user-sm3xq5ob5d yes that is right. But the german state has incredibly high restrictions for owners to restore old buildings like this. They will get some support, but in the end its a barrel without a bottom. I don t know wether you understand my english. Anyhow, this size you need several millions and the state rather let it rotten down. Its so sad!!
He has done a lot of restorative work to the entire castle. The place was in really rough shape when he bought it! Time and money are for sure limiting factors, but what he has contributed to the place already is wonderful.
@@berndgaal7689 To get money from the state is difficult. They rather impose restrictions on you than giving a helping hand. My employer once bought a mere hull of a former embassy building to convert it into an educational facility. Because it was seen ashistoric significant they demanded that no modern lighting appliances and electric witches were allowed. So they had to find a GDR factory that was still making those old style rotary switches and put them in again. All that stuff had long been stolen because the house was open for so long before that.

I have to stop, cuz in America, our closets are also literally *inside the walls*: ) Nichts fuer ungut, I live in Germany and I understand - I've been to our town's Schloss/Burg (It's actually called SchlossBurg). . But for us it's IKEA all the way in my house! And deeper in, you encountered straw insulation - our house is only from 1870 and we have straw insulation. Not the best thought out, but there it is. I cannot walk through several doors in my house without ducking, and I'm 5'4". I don't get it - how can people have been so small in 1870?

We get that, the closets are literally in the walls. I guess the point was to show that is was built into a thick concrete wall rather than what typical homes in the States are (wood framing and sheetrock. Definitely not saying that this was one of a kind, but I see why that would be a bit confusing.
As for the restoration of the castle, I believe he told us there was no government funding to help with the project costs. Purely from his own earnings and desire to bring the castle back to life as best as he could.

Not sure about sending ghosts or spirits, but probably just the age of the building and the drafty doors and windows of some sections. Overall, incredible experience :)

The wall is made out of clay, not mud.
You three great adventures....to sleep in that castle..just by yourselves.....no fears?....how was heated that aria?...was not cold?.....the owner need a lot of $$$$$help...maybe some EU help....that is so sad that humanity spend the money on wars ...instead of preserving the history...
The castle seems really very old. It looks like it's going to collapse at any moment. I would be afraid to sleep in such old buildings. Spit and ghosts really exist!

In most old buildings in Germany someone died. But when the ghosts see that you treat the house in a good manner and try to bring it back to old glory, the ghosts will protect you or leave the castle because they know that the castle is in good hands.
