I lived in Germany for 11 years. Most of it in Nurnberg, I worked in Graf and Hohenfels but also in Stuttgart. I honestly after 11 years wanted to go home. Now after 17 years back stateside, we are ready to go back to Germany. I will be like you are 1 year later, revisiting old places I used to visit. I really miss Germany and it's unique ways of living. Germany is and will always be my second home. God bless and really good video.
The normalization of what at first seems soooo exceptional is just what we experience everywhere. No matter how beautiful something seems at first sight, once you get used to it, anything becomes part of the scenery and drops into the background. Until someone fresh like you comes in from the outside and points out the beauty again. That's the number one reason I believe so many Germans love to see videos from expats/immigrants about Germany. Because it helps us to open our eyes again to the beauty that surrounds us, making us realize, and appreciate everything more. For that I am more than happy, and thankful, for anyone taking on both the burden but also the adventure of moving to a foreign country and showing their progress there. Thank you two for making these videos, and allowing us to partake in your small family of three, and all the fresh views you are granting us.
I am lucky enough to live in one of those "little fairy-tale German towns" - in fact in the middle of the "Old Town" -, but in everyday life I just drive through all the beauty, not watching, thinking of something else. But every now and then I would go on foot, deliberately looking at, appreciating all the awesome spots of our little town. And it is all the more fun if I happen to be guiding tourists - friends who come to stay with us for a few days -, because then MY sensation is hightened through THEIR eyes. And this in fact may be a strong reason to want to entertain guests in your home town, if I come to think of it :)
Honestly, watching people discover germany is so much fun, just because people get so excited about all the new stuff that is so familiar to me living here. Also, i love seeing castles, too! Burg Eltz is by far my all-time favourite as it is so (!) stunningly beautiful....
You are such wonderful people with a positive aditude. You don't moan constantly but make the best out of life. Even if it's raining a lot you manage to enjoy being outside. Its great to have you here. I am looking forward to hearing and seeing more of your adventures in Germany and other places in Europe. Take care and go on like that.
Watching you enjoying my home country while we moved to your home country is amazing! We appreciate our country now more by seeing it through your eyes! Exploring the world is so great! But, what we admire the most is that you are hosting an Ukrainian family! I wish more Americans what be so open to explore different cultures, the world would be a better place! Much love from us, Germans, in North Carolina to you, Americans, in Bavaria!;)
Willa is growing up so fast! The last few weeks at the Kita have made a noticeable difference in the way she responds to everything. And how marvellous that she already speaks little phrases in German with not a trace of self-consciousness, just the way, in fact, all kids placed in a different culture quickly find their feet while adults treat every new experience with trepidation. Good luck for your next year!

@@OurStorytoTell thanks! It was nice most of the few days that I was there. Just there for about 5-6 days, just had to get back! Lol. Have holidays in May again and wanting to go back but still undecided and if flight loads are good. Thinking the flights will be full so I don’t think I’d get there
My daughter is obsessed with Willa. It's unbelievable. Shes screaming out of joy as soon as Willa is on screen. I don't know why. It's not like she's never seen another toddler before. She goes to Kita and spends her whole day there with other toddlers. There must be something special about Willa obviously.
My guess is, that normally there are just adults on the screen, talking about their adult topics. About houses, streets, cars and so on... But then... occasionally... This was so much fun! I discovered your channel about a year ago and have been following you ever since. It was great seeing Graf again, I was born and raised there, and when you walked across the bridge to the Marktplatz, I remembered how fell into the Stadtweiher one cold winter, I have a lot of fond memories, but believe me, the houses have not always been so colorful! 😆 Up until the 90s I seem to remember that everything was centered around base, and the rest was just, well, boring... A lot has changed since then, obviously. Congratulations to the 20000, love what you do for your Ukrainian guests and keep up making good videos!
Indeed. I learned German from the age of 23 and now I realise how much more I know about my own language, English, by thinking how Germans would express ideas.
You're coming to Bochum? That's just around the corner from my place. Welcome to the Ruhr district! Nice to have you here. Thanks for sharing your experiences over the past year!
Stay strong about the tattoo, Tanner. Living happy together without the matching tat will be a stronger statement. You guys seem very happy and laughing a lot more. Enjoy having your family over. No need to feel bad, you´ve done amazing for the Ukrainian family.
Congratz for 20k Subscribers here on YT! This is one of my favorite Channels on RUclips and I wanna thank you for always putting so much work into your Videos. You deserve all the love
Hello dear ones, you feel well in germany, you have arrived here. Think about it and enjoy it day by day. Germany and Europe still have so much to offer. You have already seen a small part of it. Your child grows up in a safe environment, goes to kindergarten and plays with them. You will also grow with your experiences here. Enjoy it, and it is nice and happy that you are here in Germany.
A year already? Wow... how time flies by! The video with the colored houses was the first of yours I've seen and since that day I steadily like watching your adventures and experiences. Congrats to the 20k Followers, well earned and deserved!
Can not believe it's been a year! So glad I found y'all❤️ so glad I subscribed so I could watch your adventures! Bless y'all for sharing your lives. I've enjoyed watching Willa grow up and look forward to seeing (and hearing) more from her. And wow a giveaway too! Keep on growing!
I am laughing along with you - yes, it is a bit drab in comparison with others, but I think it’s super sweet that you loved it so much until you knew more about Germany. It’s taken me back, too: I went crazy over my first ok-ish, student flats in Germany because they had a balcony! Wow!!! In GB that was extremely rare and I thought it was so cool.
About the tattoo idea a lyric from Wir Sind Helden came to mind: Sie haben uns ein Denkmal gebaut. So you really really don’t need that!!!
The biggest change I noticed is that your videos got a lot more relaxed. In the beginning you were trying so hard to make perfect, highly polished travel videos - which was cool - but as it turned out not really sustainable. I very much welcomed your decision to turn it down a notch, it makes your videos a lot more enjoyable knowing you're not breaking your back in the name of 'content'. The little bit of chaos (mostly brought about by Willa) really suits you and gives your channel it's own personality. On the tattoos...nah, maybe start with a matching haircut.
wow congratulations for 20K and 1 year in Germany. I've been following your adventure since the beginning 😊your are such a sympatic family . it's interesting to see Germany with your eyes because having been abroad, I've been wanting to emigrate from Germany for 20 years 😂😂 because I find the landscape boring and the weather too cold and grey, missing the sun, lol. You guys are gorgeous and an enrichment for our country ❤️ so glad to have you here and hoping to meet you one day. love from Munich!
Where you want to go? 😂 I came from Canada, and in Germany it's much better. And isn't Alps close to Munich? You need to go around and explore, it's definitely not boring!
@@awesomedude4428 I prefer the sea and Mediterranean vibes. Lived in the South of France which is beautiful 😍 in the Provence. I would now love to live in South California
8:30 min. you fell in love with European chocolate?! YEP!! I guess I mentioned already I grew up in Germany... first time again I was in the US and bought some chocolate I thought: WHAT IS THIS? I sit here laughing, Marissa
Hello Guys, I’ve watched pretty much all of your videos throughout this past year. You’re such a genuine & sehr sympathische Familie. I used to live in Graf 2002 and shortly after that in Eschenbach until 2006, and enjoyed the videos in and around Graf area. But I really enjoyed all of your vacation videos as well. Sometimes I got a bit jealous cause you guys see all these wonderful places😉. I’m happy you’ll spend more time overseas and look forward to see more from Willa, Marissa and Tanner 🥰
Your pronounciation of Nahkauf is pretty good already =) Just a little tweak: the h indicates that the vowel that comes before it is pronounced a little bit longer than usual. That's the same effect as the double vowel in Saal (hall/saloon) or Meer (ocean/sea).
I find it really cool that family is coming to visit. 1 year is a record. When we lived in Germany, the only family that visited were my grandma (who loved Kuchen as much as me!) and my godmother who worked for United Airlines. But they did that on a regular basis. Back in Chicago, it took the Germans 2 years for the first ones to visit. Back in Germany, after my regular visitors have passed away, nobody from stateside comes to visit. I've even bought a ticket for my best friend in Chicago to come visit, and he chickened out in the last minute. So sad, that Americans don't travel to foreign countries. The plane fares aren't that expensive: my record cheap fare was $300 r/t Chicago - Frankfurt on United.
Really nice video and i was shocked as you mentioned that it‘s been one year already, i‘ve been watching since the beginning (from Germany) ☺️✌🏻 PS: Willa is so cute and i love that you just let her be herself and don‘t care that shes pushing her face in the camera 😂 i laughed out loud 😂
Thanks! That means a lot! We don't ever want to make her feel like she has to act a certain way when we film! If she doesn't want to be in the video-great! If she wants to stick her head right in front of the camera-that's great too haha! :)
Iam so excited for you to visit Bochum and the beautiful Ruhrpott. Its diverse and full of huge cities like Dortmund, Duisburg and Essen a very industrial but unique area.
😄 I had to laugh so hard as you mentioned the construction. Honestly I will never understand why some constructions lasts for years. This is so annoying!!! In German I would say: Willa ist der absolute Knaller! She is absolutely awesome and adorable 🥰. You are doing a pretty good job with your videos and I like how active you are helping with the refugees from the Ukraine! Greets from NRW 😊
My son, my solely pride - he's named Jason-Alexander - a German 19-year old Abiturient to be in May, keep's telling me his future daughter would be named Willa........ let me shed some tears..... my English may not be perfect, but I hope you're getting the point..... We love you guys :-)
There are constantly new modern neighborhoods being constructed in Germany! My sister just built her house in one, it looked the same as that construction area for like 2years, when i grew up it was the same for us aswell, but the construction sites honestly are fun as kids, playing around with all the other family's kids that moved there at the same time due to houses being built :D
Congratulation!! I love to watch your Videos and to see, how Willa grows and learns to speak. But mostly I like her singing, sehr really has talent! I would be glad to get the giveaway

Really? Already a year? It's incredible how fast time passes by. You've created some awesome content which I really enjoyed to watch. I'm just curious when we will see a whole video you guys just talk german? ;)
@@OurStorytoTell Absolutely, I'm really curious how far your progress is. I mean the more you use it, the better you become. I know from myself that every time I "talk" to my British friends I need a few minutes to get the knot out of my tongue. 😛😁
Thanks for sharing your journey! It's been great watching your experiences and how they're similar and different from our own here in Leipzig. We've only been in Germany for 7 months but it's been an amazing ride so far! Looking forward to experiencing more and seeing more from you guys!
@@OurStorytoTell As of right now, we think we'll be here at least 5 years, but who knows what will happen! We're just enjoying the adventure along the way.
I love seeing germany through your eyes, since everything seems so ordinary and normal when your german. Can’t wait for your experiences of Bochum, since I live in the neighbor city (Essen)! Maybe I get a new perspective of my own home 😅
Once you have the time, you should check out "Therme Erding" with the Sauna Area as well. For even more of that experience that you had in that relatively tiny Wellness Area you visited.
I am glad to see that you have settled in well in Germany. Especially Willa is developing splendidly. There are so many worthwhile sights in Europe. It's nice to see that you can also enjoy little things like a brook. If Willa wants to be a real princess, combine the Moritzburg Hunting Castle with a visit to Dresden. The Czech cult Christmas movie "Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella" was filmed in Moritzburg. Marissa, Tanner & Willa you are Welcome!
Oh my goodness lady 😍 I adore you! I think I've been following your Instagram since high school if it's been up that long 😂 I followed here for the giveaway! I think everything you and Tanner are doing is amazing and I am living vicariously through you!
In and around Bochum you could visit: Landschaftspark Duisburg, Zeche Zollverein, Westfalenstadion/Signal Iduna Park or Villa Hügel. You should try Currywurst (the best once are served im Ruhrgebiet)
It's unfortuately not unsual that constructions take extremely long here in Germany, wether it is roads or houses. It can happen that a road refurbishment of, let's say, a square meter, takes not half a day but a year. Here in my hometown some years ago they built a a new platform at a station for local public trains. When it was finished after a year or so they forgot to take the barriers of the construction site away at one entrance. You couldn't use one of two entrances to the platform for two years.
Haha. You work at Grafenwöhr. I was part of the German Navy security forces securing US-Army Hohenfels training ground relieving US army reserve in 2003 (Iraq). The Army commander greeted us with: "Welcome in the middle of nowhere". This place really is bavarian siberia (Oberpfalz). My experience was actually so bad, it made me leave the statutory service asap and not voluntarily extending service which I intended before being deployed there. Had to finance university studies a different way... Worked out as well.
You need to meet a great guy called Nick Alfieri. His RUclips channel is called NALF. He is also american and he is living about 6 years in Schwäbisch Hall Germany. Nick seems to be a great guy, very smart and open mindet like you guys are too. I would love to watch a video with all of you guys together!!!
Ok I give you a Tipp for your next Turkish meal: order a Dürüm Döner (maybe called Yufka in your region) and let them wrap French fries into it! My favorite turkish dish 👍
Different colored houses: You guys have to go to Laufenburg, a town at the Swiss-German border. Actually there are 2 Laufenburgs, a German one and a Swiss one, separated by the Rhine river. And the houses on both sides are old and very colorful
@@OurStorytoTell Another nice place close by is Bad Säckingen (10 km). 'Lauren in Germany' did a nice video about that (and touring with the "Trompeter of Säckingen'" Generally the Rhine river between Switzerland and Germany is nice because during WW2 the bombers tried to stay from Switzerland (neutral country) and that saved lots of old buildings in Germany too. Before Napoleon many town were located on both sides of the Rhine, Napoleon splitted that in in two countries though.
Why don't you try to learn every day one new sentence of german? One example: Today is a beautiful day= Heute ist ein wunderschöner Tag!;-))) If you say it 10 times and it will stay in your mind!
Already a year in Europe. Lots of different peoples, lots of different cultures and sometimes different opinions about things. As a foreigner, how would you describe life in Europe? How do you deal with the fact that from this side of the Atlantic things are judged themselves, maybe differently than in the States. But sometimes the same. And yet when it comes down to it, the cohesion is there.
DO Berlin in Summer :D Berlin is not a pretty city. It can feel ugly and look ugly except of certain tourist places just like London, Paris or New York. Too crowded too many Bricks. If you go in Summer there is way more opportunities and you can do a nice river ride or go to a beach bar on the spree and its just a way more happy place. Just like with all the cities mentioned
I love your vids and had to chuckle on your "how green it is" remark because I remember you saying it a year ago and I thought the exact same then as you are now lol. But, dont get me wrong, please don't get a partner tattoo. Especially if one of you is not 💯% sure of it. I knoe of not a single time partnering tattoos ever went well.
Germans so: "Okay, this is a quite normal german town, a bit grey, but okay - it is early spring, but I better want to go home, reading or watching TV or cook something...." . You: "Oh my god, this is so exiting! Look how colourful it is!" - This is absolutely crazy to watch these videos as a German, because maybe we do not appreciate our own towns and countrysides as much a we should and take it as "too normal". Maybe we should appreciate more that it is a kind of privilege to live here. But if you are grown up in this country you usually don't think much about the beautiful things. Watching your videos help to see my own country "with the eyes" of people from far away. This is really a quite nice experience. 😀

i agree, Tanner will look great with a braided ponytail. :)
wow congratulations for 20K and 1 year in Germany.
Loved it, especially Willa's face close to the camera. I hope your family gets to try Döner as well when they come.
Oh believe us, they will! 😊😋
Such a happy video. Thank you for sharing
I have to say you did quite a lot in one year despite Corona. I wish you lots of fun.
Your pronounciation of Nahkauf is pretty good already =)
Just a little tweak: the h indicates that the vowel that comes before it is pronounced a little bit longer than usual.
That's the same effect as the double vowel in Saal (hall/saloon) or Meer (ocean/sea).
Congratulations on 1yr and 20K subscribers
Thank you Rebecca! :) Means a lot!
So glad y’all are still enjoying Germany!! And yes get (good quality) matching tattoos 😂
Really nice video and i was shocked as you mentioned that it‘s been one year already, i‘ve been watching since the beginning (from Germany) ☺️✌🏻
PS: Willa is so cute and i love that you just let her be herself and don‘t care that shes pushing her face in the camera 😂 i laughed out loud 😂
Thanks! That means a lot! We don't ever want to make her feel like she has to act a certain way when we film! If she doesn't want to be in the video-great! If she wants to stick her head right in front of the camera-that's great too haha! :)
Haha i still remember the "colorful houses" video. Was laughing so hard :) Im glad you enjoying your time here and pls come to Passau ;)
On the cobble stone road, it sounds like Willa is trying to say " es wackelt", which is German for " it's shaking"! 😄
Stimmt!
I love your channel... I can sit in front of my TV in the evening and can relax with your beautiful videos...
Iam so excited for you to visit Bochum and the beautiful Ruhrpott. Its diverse and full of huge cities like Dortmund, Duisburg and Essen a very industrial but unique area.
We are excited to see it too! :)
Following you along is so much fun
Thank you!! 😊 That makes us so happy to hear!
Ich wünsche euch eine schöne Zeit !
Willa ist the best sign for your bond you can have, you don't need a tattoo . Glad you still love it here .
No tattoo please, you really don’t need that!!! It's so cute hearing Willa speaking german!
Hi, hope you like it in Germany! Greetings from..., Germany!
My son, my solely pride - he's named Jason-Alexander - a German 19-year old Abiturient to be in May, keep's telling me his future daughter would be named Willa........ let me shed some tears..... my English may not be perfect, but I hope you're getting the point..... We love you guys :-)
Awwww this means so much to us!!🥺 How touching. Thanks for sharing!! Jason-Alexander seems like an awesome guy!
That’s good you guys were able to make the most of it!
Congratulation!! I love to watch your Videos and to see, how Willa grows and learns to speak. But mostly I like her singing, sehr really has talent!
I would be glad to get the giveaway
I would be glad to get those chips they were eating in the car. Really yummy!
You're included in the giveaway! :) Thanks so much for the kind comment!
Congratulations for your first European/ German year ..wishing you many more...I was with you from the beginning..thanks RUclips😜😀.who pop you up....and fallow alk your video ...love all ....and seeing you sweet princess growing...amazing...she is so cute...( please be careful with that pink sweat !!!!!...)
Pronounciation of Bochum is just perfect. I am really impressed. Most english speaking people can not pronounce ch
Greetings from Eschenbach.
Your neighbour city.
I just came across your channel. Great Work, keep it up👍
Ah yes Eschenbach!! Fun to have a local follow! 😊 Thanks so much for watching & the kind words!
Love you guys 👍🏻
Well we love having you here! :)
Soo cool!!
Really? Already a year? It's incredible how fast time passes by. You've created some awesome content which I really enjoyed to watch. I'm just curious when we will see a whole video you guys just talk german? ;)
Not sure haha still practicing, but good to know you'd enjoy seeing it! :)
Thanks for being a part of our community! It’s crazy how fast it goes by! How long are you guys planning on staying in Germany?
@@OurStorytoTell As of right now, we think we'll be here at least 5 years, but who knows what will happen! We're just enjoying the adventure along the way.
Another 2-3 weeks and nature should be completely green again. It's always so much nicer 🤩
I remember you shopping in that supermarket. A year has gone by already??
Right? Crazy!!
I hope you will stay here forever!!!
I love seeing germany through your eyes, since everything seems so ordinary and normal when your german. Can’t wait for your experiences of Bochum, since I live in the neighbor city (Essen)! Maybe I get a new perspective of my own home 😅
Hallo aus Essen! :)
Thank you friend!! 😊 We appreciate the tips and ideas.
Oh my goodness lady 😍 I adore you! I think I've been following your Instagram since high school if it's been up that long 😂 I followed here for the giveaway! I think everything you and Tanner are doing is amazing and I am living vicariously through you!
Hi Misty!! Love seeing a comment from you! 💛 Thanks for the follow and kindness! Wishing you luck in the giveaway!
Great video! :) 💙💛
Hey thanks! 😊
one year??? whoooshhhh
Crazy right!!!
In and around Bochum you could visit: Landschaftspark Duisburg, Zeche Zollverein,
Westfalenstadion/Signal Iduna Park or Villa Hügel. You should try Currywurst (the best once are served im Ruhrgebiet)
Thank you for all those great ideas!
"Beeep beeep beeep "- So sweet!
Nice couple 👍 Love you all ❤️ from Bangladesh 🇧🇩🇧🇩
It's unfortuately not unsual that constructions take extremely long here in Germany, wether it is roads or houses. It can happen that a road refurbishment of, let's say, a square meter, takes not half a day but a year. Here in my hometown some years ago they built a a new platform at a station for local public trains. When it was finished after a year or so they forgot to take the barriers of the construction site away at one entrance. You couldn't use one of two entrances to the platform for two years.
The first a of Nahkauf is pronounced like the a of "far". The way you pronounced "kauf" is absolutely right. :-)
One year already in Germany. Time flies. Btw did you only order Döner or did you tried dürüm too?
I know it’s crazy! We have tried one before and it’s still good, but we do prefer the Döner 😋
A Döner with Pommes in the car...you nailed it😂😜😘
You need to meet a great guy called Nick Alfieri. His RUclips channel is called NALF. He is also american and he is living about 6 years in Schwäbisch Hall Germany. Nick seems to be a great guy, very smart and open mindet like you guys are too. I would love to watch a video with all of you guys together!!!
Yay! Giveaway ⭐️
Ok I give you a Tipp for your next Turkish meal: order a Dürüm Döner (maybe called Yufka in your region) and let them wrap French fries into it! My favorite turkish dish 👍
Mmmm! We’ve had the dürüm, but never with French fries! Thanks for the tip 😋
Lollipop and French fries, rotational - I'll have to try that! 😁
Willa 😍vibes 😍
Different colored houses: You guys have to go to Laufenburg, a town at the Swiss-German border. Actually there are 2 Laufenburgs, a German one and a Swiss one, separated by the Rhine river. And the houses on both sides are old and very colorful
Ooh this sounds like an area we’d enjoy! Thanks 😊
@@OurStorytoTell Another nice place close by is Bad Säckingen (10 km). 'Lauren in Germany' did a nice video about that (and touring with the "Trompeter of Säckingen'"
Generally the Rhine river between Switzerland and Germany is nice because during WW2 the bombers tried to stay from Switzerland (neutral country) and that saved lots of old buildings in Germany too.
Schaun wer mal , genau !
Hi, what do you would you choose between living in Sicily and living in Germany?
What a cute baby!!!
15:30 is like watching 2 movies at the same time xD
Already a year in Europe.
Lots of different peoples, lots of different cultures and sometimes different opinions about things.
As a foreigner, how would you describe life in Europe?
How do you deal with the fact that from this side of the Atlantic things are judged themselves, maybe differently than in the States. But sometimes the same.
And yet when it comes down to it, the cohesion is there.
You sound much more confident!!!
We feel more confident so thank you! 💛
Die schönsten drei Worte der Welt:
Ein Döner, bitte.
😊
A challenge for the next year March : a video in German :-)
DO Berlin in Summer :D Berlin is not a pretty city. It can feel ugly and look ugly except of certain tourist places just like London, Paris or New York. Too crowded too many Bricks. If you go in Summer there is way more opportunities and you can do a nice river ride or go to a beach bar on the spree and its just a way more happy place. Just like with all the cities mentioned
Love the tip! Thank you! 😊
