    I had a similar experience with my Tesla Wall Connector when I got my F150 Lightning. In addition to needing a NACS to CCS adapter (I chose Lectron), I couldn’t charge the truck until I chose the “Charge Any EV” option in the Wall Connector configuration utility. Been working perfectly ever since!

    Difference:
    Tesla only - used proprietary protocol to communicate not only charge on/off and amps, but also vin, update the charger, monitor temperature.
    All EVs - it is a simple PWM signal. Duty cycle x 0.6 = Amps. If voltage is 12V - car not connected. 9V - car connected, does not need charge. 6V - car connected, turn on contactor. 3V - charge and ventilation needed (for lead acid battery vehicles)
    Compatibility mode - it tries Tesla protocol, and if it fails, falls back to universal standard. Note that some cars do not try to resume after first fail, and will not charge when protocol switch.

      Compatibility mode probably disabled the Tesla only stuff. That is, it doesn't try at first to be more compatible with other EVs that don't expect that.

    Tom, my brother-in-law has a Cadillac Lyriq. His son has a Tesla. So long before he got his Cadillac Lyriq he installed a Tesla wall charger for his son's Model Y. When he went to charge his Lyriq he had the same problem that you were having on the equinox. He went into the app and flipped it over to the compatibility mode, and the issue was resolved.

    I just picked up my Equinox EV today, and tried it on my older Tesla Wall connector witha a Lectron J-1772 adaptor.(I believe it's a Gen2, so no app) at first it said it couldn't charge. I unplugged and replugged, and after 20-30 seconds it started with no issues. So it might just be the later wall connectors that have a problem. Love your show, thanks!

      That is interesting! I have an early Tesla home charger too, no App (with Elon's signature on the front). It’s set up for full 80 Amps (the early Tesla could charge 80 amps). The Silverado EV can take 80 amps. However, when I plug it in, it got the error you describe (It did charges for a short time at 17kw then errored). (I had to wait about 20 minutes before the OEM 30amp charger would work.). Did you unplugged and replugged without waiting? What amperage it you charger setup up as (such as 48 amps etc.)? Thx so much.

    By default, the wall connector tries communicating with Tesla single wire CAN protocol first, and then reverts to J1772 mode. The pilot signals transmitted in Tesla mode are not J1772 compliant and can confuse some EVs, which may trigger an immediate charge fault and prevent charging. I actually do not think most manufacturers test with the Tesla wall connector because these issues are fairly common. They only test J1772 protocol chargers. In some cases the Tesla CAN protocol will make the car think it's connected to a DC charger and it will actually try to lock the cable in place. The EV manufactures needs to add the Tesla wall connector in regular mode to their testing routines, and make the software more tolerant of communication failures. There is no reason the car has to lock out charging indefinitely just because of a communication issue, that's being too conservative. It should keep trying and listen for J1772 for a whole minute before giving up.

    • @levenkay4468
      @levenkay4468 2 месяца назад

      No. It is emphatically NOT any OEM's business to demand that a standards body rework a published spec. Especially if that would retroactively make pre-existing implementations "non-conformant".

  • @bjcouche1
    @bjcouche1 2 месяца назад +1

    @TopGunZero provided some good clarification in the comments on what the Tesla EVSE is doing with these different modes. In these modes the EVSE is attempting Tesla PROPRIETARY non J1772 communications in order to provide limits based on vehicle vin, vehicle type, etc. Until you set the Tesla EVSE to compatibility mode, it is NOT J1772 COMPLIANT. If your non Tesla happens to be able to deal with the other modes then you simply got lucky and a clever engineer at the OEM figured out a work around to make that EV work with that particular non compliant issue. The issue goes back to why State Of Charge is here in the first place: We have published standards, but the EVSE and DC fast charger manufacturers don't follow them because they "know better". We have AC and DC chargers that have "J1772 or CCS compliant" plastered on their nameplates, but if tested to the standard, would never pass. SAE needs to prevent companies from claiming compatibility unless their products have been tested by a third party for adherence to the standard. Like A law is useless if there is no method to enforce it.

    With Tesla saying this helps with 'older software', it would be interesting to know what precisely is happening. One wouldn't expect 'old software' in some of these new vehicles, but then again most OEMs are part-bin OEMs that don't really do their own software. So maybe some supplier is using some older stuff?
    Would be nice to know the details so we know who to ask to get things in gear, as it were.

    • @haanc2
      @haanc2 2 месяца назад +1

      Well, the fact that the Wall Connector can do VIN-based access control means it's able to use some other bi-directional protocol, which is likely attempting to handshake first, then falling back to j1772 signaling. Compatibility Mode probably disables that other protocol entirely, and might do some other stuff.
      My first guess when I saw the video title was that the charger in the Equinox saw that totally foreign handshake and straight up crashed before the wall connector switched to j1772.

    • @dperreno
      @dperreno 2 месяца назад

      I think that "older software" description is misleading. The probably just loosen up some of the requirements/expectations that the charger is looking for when it does the handshake. The fact that even brand new vehicles seem to require the compatiblity mode seems to back this up.

  • @karlInSanDiego

    I'm confused how this is an Equinox problem. Tesla only released the Universal Wall Connector a year ago, right? And before that, their Tesla EVSE was Tesla only not supporting J1772 via connector, but compatible via Tesla to J1772 adapter. Tesla's original charging standard is not using the J1772 protocol at all, right?
    Tesla's insistence from Model S and on of using a proprietary connector and proprietary comms right up until they invented a half standard that SAE had to complete with J3400 has been one great big compatibility issue. Tesla clearly saw the need for a compatibility mode, which probably was an afterthought after spotting incompatibility in some cases. Therefore, if it ships with the dual connector, it shoukd default to the compatibility mode. Especially if the error it throws, creates a persistent refusal to charge until the car goes to sleep as you demonstrated

    These AC charging issues with Ultium vehicles is a little concerning. At least your charger didn’t brick your vehicle. I recently had a public ChargePoint level 2 charger cause a high voltage system warning in my Lyriq. Eventually a 12V battery disconnect procedure resolved it, but not before I had to have my Lyriq towed in the middle of the night.

    I have 2 Blazer EV’s. At least on 3 different occasions between the 2, the dealership needed to update the radio/computer even though a software update wasn’t listed as available (there was an update even after the initial software update fix) and more issues were fixed. Perhaps the equinox EV is in the same boat of software updates that aren’t showing to owners as available or needed.
    My first Blazer EV RS bricked in the driveway and was towed to the dealership after 12v reset didn’t do anything. That’s when they first updated the software on it after the initial software update to start selling them again. So yes, there is a software update even though non shows up as available or needed.

I have a Gen 2 Tesla wall charger which doesn't have the adaptor so I can't use it yet anyway, even though the base is mounted to the wall of my garage. The vehicle went into a charging fault condition from the Wall Connector so nothing would charge it at that point. It wasn't going to accept charge from any AC source - it's possible that it would have accepted DC power, though, but we'll never know. Once the fault cleared, I could use the other chargers, maybe even the TUWC, but I wasn't going to try that until I figured out what triggered the fault.

I just plugged mine in for the first time finally to charge it at home on our EVIQO charger which has always worked fine with my Tesla Model Y, Rivian R1S, and an Ioniq 5 I tested. It showed that the charging started and then immediately failed twice. The third time, I opened the car and ensured it powered fully on first and now it appears to be working fine. Love love love love your channel, but this was poor on your part and to blame GM at the end of the video when it's clearly a Tesla issue. GM probably doesn't have much communication with the Tesla charging team since so many of them were laid off (assuming L2 charging team is the same as the L3 charging team). You have an atypical setup and this wouldn't have happened to a typical consumer, assuming the typical consumer followed the instructions on the wall charger app to put the device in compatibility mode if there were any charging issues. Most consumers have 1 charger, and some MAYBE a second of the same brand and even fewer on a different brand. This is something that should have been investigated before you put out the first video and maybe added as a footnote to a larger video. You have a huge audience that has a big impact on the adoption of specific vehicles. That comes with some level of responsibility that I don't think you lived up to in this case. agreed, this felt like a non-issue turned into one because of a settings quirk. that being said, you'd expect GM to test and double-test compatibility with the Tesla Universal, as Tom mentioned, but it seems they didn't do so for their Ultium cars. the Bolt has had 0 issues on the standard "all vehicles" mode, but now the Equinox and Blazer seem to-even if that "issue" is just a quick fix in the settings. perhaps something happened on Tesla's software end that GM was unaware of, but even then, you'd expect to see similar problems with charging a Bolt, but there haven't been (source: am a Bolt owner with a Tesla Universal Connector, lol). overall I agree with Tom this is likely on GM, but I also agree with you that this is a minor issue with a quick fix and hence didn't need to be a full video that potentially scares many people off GM's EVs, which have generally been very good.
