The film is much darker than the play. How to infuse comedy into a story of murder and cannibalism? Well, Sondheim and Hal Prince did it, and rather brilliantly. To me Angela Lansbury is still the canonical Mrs. Lovatt. The original Broadway production, thought with George Hearn rather than Len Cariou, is available on video.

Sweeny Todd has been one of my favorites for a long time now. Husband and I can sing all of the songs from it, without using the libretto. I love the darkness of it all, the desperation, the growing insanity. I'd watch the original with Angela Lansbury and Lou Cariou, and then the Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter version. =)

I always forget how crazy this show is to people who don’t know it going in. Watching the whole thing would be fun! But be sure to do one of the bootlegs of the stage play; the movie cuts and changes a lot.

Personally, the 2007 film limited the humor aspect and focused more on the horror elements. I hope you continue with the original Broadway cast recording, @IndiaReacts

A great track, so full of puns. The Angela Lansbury/Len Cariou version is #ChefKiss (Yes this is HBC/Depp in case you're curious).
I love musicals and you seem to enjoy the story-songs too. Perhaps you could make a series of reacting to a show, track by track? Would be fun to see some theater reactions.

Another amazing Sondheim song noted for its lyrics and complexity is Not Getting Married Today from Company. Said it before but IMHO Sondheim is one best lyricists and often very funny.

yup its johnny depp. sweeney todd has all 5 of my fav movie celebrities: johnny depp, helena bonham carter, alan rickman, tim burton, and danny elfman. and the funny thing is is that almost all the main characters have been in harry potter. johnny depp (grindelwald), helena bonham carter (bellatrix), alan rickman (snape), timothy spall (peter pettagrew), and the actor that plays toby.

Sweeny's main motivation in the store is getting revenge on a judge. So that's what that line about perfering judge means.

  • @ElliotNesterman

If you're going to do more Sweeney Todd probably you should listen to "By the Sea" next.
But still watch the video of the play. Most libraries would have the DVD available.

"Now you might find this one a bit stringy, but then again it was fiddle player."
"No, that's not fiddle player, it's piccolo player."
    "How can you tell?"
    "It's piping hot."
    "Then blow on it!"

It sure is an interesting take on the musical. But I think the music in this isn't as prioritized as it should be. (Verses skipped and the ballad of Sweeney Todd instrumental only)
But in the long run Johnny captures the more realistic emotions Sweeney would have had, but I think Carters portrayal of Ms. Lovett is a bit too drôle and emotionless.

idk about u but i find the play version of a little priest much crazier than the movie’s version when it come to how they sing verbally. cause in the movie mrs lovett and sweeney todd dont have as much emotion in the song. but in the play they are laughing maniacally and kinda joking around. but the movie’s version is creepier and darker

If you are going to do Stephen Sonheim musicals...Sweeney Todd is not for the faint of heart. On stage, it is much more light than the film was. It is one of my favorite musicals, but I hate the movie. Try 'A Little Night Music', 'Company', 'Follies', "Merrily We Roll Along', 'Gypsy' (which he wrote only lyrics for), 'West Side Story' (again, only lyrics), 'Passion', 'Into the Woods', 'A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To the Forum', 'Pacific Overtures'...there are a few others, but each Sondheim show is very different from the next. He never delves into the same ideas twice.

You should watch this movie...it's so twisted...and to think, it's based on a 200 year old Victorian story 'The demon barber of Fleet Street'. Those Victorian's we're definitely a twisted era, they came up with all of the truly gory tales!

does she know who sweeney todd was? she needs context! sweeney todd was a barber/murderer who operated in 18th London specifically in fleet street he would cut the throats of customers then operate a pulley where the seat would turn over and their body would fall through a trap door into the basement below and their bodies were cut up and put into pies.
