“My friends” and “a little Priest”
My favorite song is a three way tie, or I guess a section. I love pretty women, epiphany, and little priest. They all come right after each other. I love the hauntingly beautiful melody and the nail-biting suspense of pretty women, I love the dark descent into despair in epiphany, and I the dark humor of little priest.
My Friends and We All Deserve to Die. Darkly beautiful.
I gotta go with either "The Ballad Of Sweeney Todd" or "A Little Priest".

Did you also know this is the only adaptation of a Sondheim musical that Sondheim approves of? He's notoriously particular about letting others adapt his material so the fact he likes this the most speaks a lot on its qualities and Burton deliberately upped the gore factor because he said the kills/blood are Todd's catharsism so it makes more sense to let it flow.
I adore this film and weirdly just watched it again recently as I'd upgraded my film of it, never fails to entertain me every time 🙂
I may be mistaken but I remember hearing that he saw Spielberg's version of West Side Story just before he died and he was rather positive about that adaptation

Couple fun facts.
1. The singing done in the movie, they actually sang while recording. It wasn't lip synced then dubbed over. To do this, Johnny Depp actually had to take singing lessons to learn to sing.
2. Maryland Manson auditioned for and was briefly considered for the role as Sweeney Todd
3. This was Helena Bonham Carter's dream role. She grew up idolizing Mrs. Lovett's character. Which is why she always dresses kinda raggedy and if you notice, her hair style is always disheveled much like the character. You can see these influences in every film she's been in, and in her regular every day appearance

Glad you guys had the opportunity to look at this version of the musical! Sondheim's always been a master at his craft. If you're interested in other interpretations, I highly recommend the George Hearn and Angela Lansbury version, as well as the Bryn Terfel and Emma Thompson version. Both are exceptionally amazing in their own right.
Also, that new version starring Josh Groban? I would honestly give my right arm to get tickets to it.
Lol. Yeah, are we gonna mention at all the strange coincidence that the two actresses to portray Mrs. Potts in the the two disney adaptations of Beauty and the Beast, both also played Mrs. Lovett at some point also? What are the damn chances of that? Lol

OMG We've watchef Sweeney Todd at least a dozen times and it's probably our favorite Johnny/Burton film. So darkly beautiful and yet so tragic.
"My Friends" is probably off the cuff my favorite. But the duet with Alan Rickman "Pretty Women" is absolutely incredible. And how can I pass up "A Little Priest".
This film is not my favourite version of A Little Priest, though.
Most versions, they understand it's an entire song of dad jokes about cannibalism, so Sweeney and Lovett should be having a ball singing it. Johnny and Helena play it too dry imo.
Johnny's version of Epiphany ranks pretty high for me though.
there is a original broadway 1979 on broadway HD with Angela Lansbury. they filmed it. in london in 1980s
I remember this movie was released when I was just turned 18 and this movie was a red band movie and I showed my ID to watch it in the cinema. Back in that day I was in love with Johnny Depp and everything he was in.

It's probably an unpopular opinion but this is my favourite Tim Burton film, the combination of the moody Gothic visuals, the darkly comedic subject matter and of course Sondheim's classic songs ("Pretty Women" is my personal favourite, though I did like the staging of "Epiphany", and "A Little Priest" is a lovely twisted funny duet) just make this a delightfully messed up film. I also feel like it's one of the very rare musical films that doesn't really have a weak link in the cast, like Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter aren't brilliant or anything but they're both pretty good, Jamie Campbell Bower is really strong, and I was legitimately surprised by how good a singer Alan Rickman was.
If anything, this film made me really want to see it on stage. I really hope it comes back to London's West End at some point, the last time it was on was over a decade ago, with Michael Ball as Sweeney and Imelda Staunton (Professor Umbridge from the Harry Potter films) as Mrs Lovett
This was the only version that Sondheim liked and actually approved of.

Ooh, two things on the poll that I think are absolutely worth watching: Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and The Wiz. The latter is almost never done by reactors, so it might not do numbers, but it's practically the only musical film out there with an R&B / soul score. Mabel King is *incredible*.
Mabel King's performance in *The Wiz* can only be described as movie-stealing.

Great reaction, and Vanessa was so much fun, as someone who knew what was going to happen! I love this adaptation, and loved how enthusiastic Sondheim was about it too. And he LOVED HBC as Mrs. Lovett, even if she wasn't "singery." People always think Sondheim wanted perfect singers, but he was much more about the acting, and he disliked when the singing technique got in the way of the emotion. Which was why he wrote "Send in the Clowns" for Glynis Johns -- an actress with limited singing ability. The resulting song is gorgeous, but simple to sing -- no extended notes, not a huge range, all about the moment. HBC did the same thing here -- the emotion in "Nothing's Gonna Harm You" kills me here because this Mrs. Lovett (unlike most stage versions) is a monster, but she does feel real sadness at losing Toby. It's a great movie. My one (very minor) complaint is that the blood looks super-fake to me. The production and costume design are so incredible, that's the only thing that takes me out of it.
Dark Shadows was…fun I’d say and Big Fish is an emotional masterpiece ❤

This is one of my favorite movie musical adaptations, i FULLY belt the entire soundtrack everytime i take a shower lmao. Also i like the theory(even with how untrue it is) is that Toby becomes Jack the Ripper because of the psychological damage this experience caused him

Actually, the opening and ending ballads; and the interjection reprises WERE originally filmed………but cut by Burton in post-production (cut around May 2007), because Burton personally felt the original scenes were “too theatrical” for his tastes
The late Christopher Lee, Anthony Head (who appears briefly after the shaving contest), the late Peter Bowles, and three other male actors/singers sang the ballads in the original (now lost) scenes
They played the “ghosts of the customers that Todd killed” with each ghost being its own character (an idea created specifically for the film, as a way to translate the ballads from stage to screen)
This movie and musical are soooo fun and twisted

I hate horror movies (well at least the gory slasher kind) but I love this film. It is such a juxtaposition, a horror musical. This whole thing is stomach churning and it is amazing.
I prefer to think of it as a musical horror.

I was pleasantly surprised by this when I saw it as I am a huge fan of the original penny dreadful. If you can find it I must recommend the BBC drama version of this tale starring Ray Winston as an exceptional dark version of the story
got to see the preview of sweeney todd on broadway and i thought it was excellent, josh is a great performer (especially on my fav musical of all time-natasha, pierre, and the great comet of 1812) but annaleigh ashford stole the show as mrs lovett. absolutely one of my most favorite broadway performances so far!
The final minute has two of my most favorite shots ever in film. Like you said - BEAUTIFUL. Very tableau-like.
Um, the thing that drew me to this show when I happened on it on PBS as a teenager, was how hard it went. It's not the most splattery musical of all time, but there's certainly streams of blood.

We need a fan fic where Todd doesn't kill his wife, and eventually, she starts remembering things
also one where he actually cares to have johanna back after getting the judge out of the way, freeing her. to not be unconcerned with her allowing the next guy in line to come sniffing after her. it makes no sense for him to have wanted his wife back so bad he kills lovett but not his daughter who he knew was alive this whole time.

1. Thinking nothing but getting revenge for 15 years
2. Learning that his wife was sexually assaulted and presumably took her own life caused him to narrow his focus even more on the judge.
Rage can cause you to not think clearly.
Plus, Johanna would be in better hands with with the young sailor guy , than the the creepy judge Turpin.
I don't think she lost her memory, it seemed like her brain was just scrambled from it. Since she knew who Beetle and the judge were still, she recognized Todd's face (though she didn't have enough time to fully recall him). She low-key had it the worst.

“Jersey Girl” is super unappreciated but it’s actually a great movie (including George Carlin’s best role & acting) with a ton of heart. Sweeney Todd plays an important part, and completely made me want to see it in theatres.

I have so many theories wirh this movie before watching the play and reading thr book. I believe mrs lovet had a thing for sweeney from the beginning. I think it was lovet that informed lucy about the judges repented desires. I believe it was lovet that gorged her husband to blotation leading him to the dropsies so she was available for sweeney. I also believe dhe had a son eith her husband and they gave him up why? I dont know. Ill assume its because he couldnt do for the shop so he was a liability at baby age. But because she gave up her son (or it passed) shes grown attached to this one. I think shes clinging to the ehite picket fence mindset lifestyle shes never been able to achieve so she will sceme and plan until she gets it (or dies)
Granted. My theroy makes her more scemy then her character analysis allows. Shes supposed to be a funny old quirky eoman eith a few screws lose.

I dont get why many reaction channels (in general) do the "comming up" clip in the beginning. Thats like the trailer that ruins a movie by spoiling the best joke before you watched the movie. You can do "comming up in this episode" clips when you are mythbusters with a big explosion wich nobody knows whats that about in the beginning....not on reaction channels. Is it a pre-reaction to get you engaged to see the same reaction again? Please Reaction channels..dont do the "comming up" clips

I don't think the movie is bad, but it's lacking a lot of comedy that is in the stage production lol I mean, don't get me wrong. It's still super dark. But it's got a good bit of funny dark

The stage musical is so much better than this film. They cut a lot of the music, including much of A Little Priest. They also drained the humor from that number and the play in general.

This version is very emotionally muted compared to the original stage musical melodrama. I have conflicted feelings about it. It's good, but the singing and acting aren't really as big and dramatic as Sweeney deserves.

Urgh! I can't stand this film, so I won't be watching (sorry). Please check out the George Hearn and Angela Lansbury version instead. I've been in the stage version four times and have played the Beadle and Pirelli. This film was a _huge_ let down.
