I barely remember the first movie, so I didn't make that connection.
Hes an concept of death, as puss is an cat then his image of death would be something like a dog (wolf).
Everyone has a different image all depends on what most are scared off.

Death is one of if not the best DreamWorks antagonist ever. His whistle still sends shivers up my spine. I like how, at the start, Puss was bragging about having "never been touched by a blade." So the moment Death was actually able to cut him, Puss became a scared, anxious mess. It's the moment he realized that he's not invincible after all.
It was much More than that for a guy who says he “laughs at the face of death”, once he assessed what happened after that cut, the jokes and humour were long gone replaced by the fear of the inevitable

Death was so well portrayed in this movie, just a force of nature, it was simply breath taking. This version of death seems to respect life, rather than just dishing out death, willy nilly. And it was different rather than having a piece of parchment and having a list and crossing names off of it. Among other literation's the reaper we know comes for you and leads you to the other side. We know that meme of death meeting someone, they have a convo and it ends with death saying no you were the best. some beg not to be taken, some are to young to know what happened, some are to far gone mentally to realize what happening, some are/were suffering, some try to prolong, some sign and accept his hand willingly. But here we're shown puss squandered and wasted 8/9 lives. Pretty sure death was there during every single one, but couldn't out right take puss because he had another life to spare. It was only when puss cherished/valued his life that death let him go, bc when he looked into his eyes at the end it wasn't a bluff or ego he normally had when they 1st met. They'll meet again, soon but not yet.

If you look, you can see him in the beginning sequence in the background. He is also on the corners of the 'Death Cards' when Puss' deaths are being counted.
They really went with the easter eggs you probably won't even notice at first viewing.
There is also a little message hidden in the Fairy Tale book Goldielocks liked so much. If you take the first letter of each line it reads: "You already have it"

He is litteraly torturing Puss, giving him PTSD and mocking him for it for his entertainment only. Puss died the very same day, when death decided to go after him just because he doesn't like him.

Its one thing to have 9 lives, its another to just waste them.
Puss deserved to be punished for such. Thankfully he learned his lesson.
What I really loved about the movie was that when Puss has his panic attack, Perrito acts like a real life service dog would in the situation and lays his head on Puss's lap to help calm him down

Dreamworks tends to be really good at making sequels better than their predecessors. Shrek 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, and now Puss in Boots the Last Wish.

I have theory that Kitty lied about not being there since she saw how bad Puss felt. Also I’m kinda happy that they caught on that the cricket sounded like Jimmy Stewart not many people caught that 😊

I’m a biased guy in saying this. But I’m a colossal sucker for dogs. So needless to say, I immediately fell in love with Perrito! He was so damn cute and adorable! Need a lot more of him asap!

This movie has a very good trio of antagonist, and anyone of them is collocate in a different category:
Goldilocks: anti-villain, she is not bad inside but she choose the wrong way to obtain her wish. In the end she has good sides, she loves the Three Bears and has help the heroes against Jack Horner.
The Wolf/The Death: Nemesis, he/it antagonised Puss because he was too arrogant and cocky, and wanted give him a lession. When Puss understands his mistakes and becames more wise and respectful towards the Life, The Wolf/The Death dimostrates his/its sense of honor and saves him.
Jack Horner: True Evil and effettive villain, compared to Goldilocks he never understood that he choose the wrong way....
oh well.... he knew that he was wrong, but he didn't care about that. He was dead inside and totaly selfish, and that was his downfall!
I honestly think since Softpaws overheard Puss, she was kind enough to not rub it in knowing how he felt. I think she lied about not being there just to show sympathy towards him knowing that he was terrified.

I'm hyped for Shrek 5.
So, speaking of someone who... is honestly rather sour on the Shrek movies, and never bothered to watch the first Puss In Boots movie, I absolutely love this movie. And Death... I don't class him as a "villain" so much as an antagonist. Heck, the opening scene alone is kind of... a huge example of why he's fed up with Puss. He literally will walk on people (seriously, what kind of 'hero' would just... happily step on a child's face?), he doesn't care about what danger he puts himself or others in, and _yeah_, he kills the giant... who wouldn't have been a problem if _he_ hadn't woken it up in the first place. Puss doesn't care about anything but the legend, and that makes him... dangerous to everyone around him. So... yeah. I'm kind of on Death's side at the beginning... but in the end... _that_ version of Puss is dead. So, mission accomplished. Live your life.

@@zephyr9852 Look at it from another perspective. In just about any other story, Puss would be a villain. Everything that he does is for selfish reasons, all to serve "the legend." He's hurt the people who care about him, he's put other people in danger, he walks over others to achieve his glory. And I don't mean that figuratively or metaphorically, or any other fancy way, he does that. Straight up.
Throughout this movie, he makes every problem that he solves, putting others in danger so that he has something to save them from. That isn't heroic. He's lied and manipulated everyone into seeing his actions as heroic, but that doesn't make the actions heroic. And in just about any other story, someone trying to put an end to the dangerous, destructive things that Puss has been doing would be a hero.
A big part of the tipping point for me is that, unlike early-movie Puss, Death actually shows restraint. He could have, hands down, taken Puss' life from the start. Puss got away because it wasn't about actually _taking_ his life, it was about teaching him a lesson about valuing life. His own and others. The moment that Puss proved to him that he had made that change, his goal was complete.
