Anthrax is visceral. They don't jump through musical hoops or write songs with multiple sections. They are yellow mustard, not Grey Poupon. When they were struggling, they ate a "loser's lunch," which was a piece of baloney in your hand.

Nice to hear some Anthrax on your channel Doug! this album always brings me back. Enjoyed the reaction...as always! Edit: As a next song, if you want to stick to the same album, I loved "Indians" back in the day!
Was at a Less Than Jake show a few years back and noticed the trombone player looked familiar. It was Scott Ian filling in because the LTJ player had a broken leg.
If you want my recommendation for an Anthrax listen it would be Who Cares Wins from State of Euphoria. It's a deeper cut of their and I think one of their more interesting songs in terms of structure. Also has, I think, Dan Spitz' best solo included.
Who would have thought 1 year ago , we'd see the day where our Daily Doug be singing with stank face "Caught in a mosh" ! 🤘 That's gold mate , well done . Metal Doug is coming out with every episode , love it . 👍😁
Its very nice to see a classical composer react this way to thrash metal songs. Many people think that metal is just noise. 818 episodes AND NOT ONE ABOUT SEPULTURA. Pick one song from the past days (before Roots album) with Max Cavalera on the guitars and vocals. Start with "Desperate Cry" or anything from Arise album
Brilliant to see you doing Anthrax! Love them. Think you'd love Black Lodge, Belly of the Beast and Bring the Noise. For a laugh you should react to I am the Man!
Anthrax has an extensive catalog having been around for 40+ years. They had a time in the mid90s - early 2000s where John Bush was the lead singer and put out some really great music. I don’t think it will be the most requested era, but I think it’s definitely worth checking out.
"Bushthrax" is very underrated, imo. Sound of White Noise was a great album, and I personally loved all the albums after that. Stomp 442 is raw af, and Volume 8 was -quite literally - groovy. WCFYA was a nice follow-up, and then they kicked him out, because the fans wanted Joey back.
Man I gotta say, I saw these guys just a couple months ago and they actually blew me away. The notes Belladonna can hit at his age….dude wtf!!! Band is tight as hell and besides not having Danny Spitz it was a darn near classic lineup! Just put a smile on my face!
I would recommend songs from the Anthrax record Persistence of Time. This record is more matured and a little bit darker than the precious records allthough Among the Living is the most popular record. -Intro the reallity / Belly of the beast -In my world After Persistence they had a line up change and got an new singer John Bush and recorded Sound of white noise. Great record and def. different to the Joey Belladonna area. -Only -Invisible -Black lodge (it's a kind of ballad). Looking forward for the next metal Monday 🤘🏻
I saw the Metallica/ Anthrax Tour (Master of Puppets/ Spreading The Disease) in Cardiff St David's Hall, Wales, September 1986, 17 days before Cliff was killed in the coach crash. What a tragedy. Second time for Anthrax (and Metallica) at Donington Monsters of Rock Festival August 1987- Bon Jovi, Dio, Metallica, Anthrax, W.A.S.P. & Cinderella. I then saw Anthrax for the last time on the Among the Living Tour Cardiff again, November 1987. From the 'Among' album, classics are 'Indians' and 'I am The Law' . Best tracks from the previous album Spreading The Disease are A.I.R, Madhouse and Gung-Ho. You should also try to squeeze in something by Stormtroopers of Death - offshoot band with Scott Ian, Charlie Benante and Dan Lilker (bass player Anthrax/ Nuclear Assault/ Brutal Truth) and vocalist Billy Milano (Method of Destruction (M.O.D), Mastery) Phew!
Great review as always Doug. Now since you are listening to 1980s punk-influenced bands, you should check out the Stormtroopers Of Death (SOD), highly recommended.
Other great Anthrax songs to listen to are Metal thrashing mad / Anthrax (Fistful of metal), Madhouse / A.I.R (Spreading the disease), I am the law / Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.) / Indians (Among the living), I am the man (1987 single), Antisocial (state of euphoria), Belly of the beast (Persistance of time), Bring the noise with rap band Public Enemy is the classic
I had been trying to teach myself to play guitar for maybe 3 months or so when this album came out. I made it a goal to learn to play the rhythm parts for this whole album by the time I made it to a year. Broke a LOT of low E strings in the process, haha, but in the end I managed it! Such a fun album to play.
I saw Anthrax on that tour. The bill was Metal Church, Anthrax and Megadeth. You may want to check out some Metal Church. Good songs: Metal Church, Beyond the Black, God's of Wrath, Ton of Bricks, Badlands, Date with poverty etc. For other Anthrax songs: A.I.R. , Madhouse, Among the Living, Indians just off the top of my head. Thank you.
While my favorites from Anthrax are still of the old school, head banging variety, I think something from The Sound of White Noise would be more to your liking. In my opinion, songs like "The Black Lodge" or "Only" are a bit more mature and not quite so much thrash all the time. I would love to see you react to either of those 2 songs. However, if you choose another song from either of the first 5 albums, I would be completely happy with that as well! Love your channel! Keep up the good work!
Absolutely love Belladonna era Anthrax. "Caught in a Mosh" is certainly a fan favourite, but it's not one of their tracks that really showcases Joey Belladonna's vocal abilities. I would highly recommend "Metal Thrashing Mad" from the "Armed and Dangerous EP" (first track I ever heard from them and it immediately got me hooked - imo the previous album version with Neil Turbin on vocals isn't anywhere near as good). Other must listens imo are "Indians" from "Among the Living" and "Blood" from the "Persistence of Time" - their best album overall for me.
Check out Intro To Reality / Belly Of The Beast off the album Persistence Of Time. Lots of neat stuff going on there. Probably their best album overall.
“Caught in a Mosh” probably isn’t the best spot to start… it’s relatively one-dimensional. Try these: “Intro to Reality / Belly of the Beast” “Antisocial” “Only” “Taking the Music Back” “Fight Em Til You Can’t” “In the End”
If we re speaking about thrash and you have listened to all bands from american Big Four i highly recommend you check danish (lyrics are on english though) thrash band Artillery, one of the classic thrash bands from Europe on par with Kreator, Sodom etc. I think album versions of Khomaniac, By Inheritance or Bombfood would be a good starting point. (I d choose Bombfood, but Khomaniac is more popular among fans). Very melodic yet highly aggressive music with unusual chord progressions, frequent usage of phrygian, and rough but clean vocal delivery. Highly recommend you to check them out, and thanks for all you reactions and analysis :)
You're spot on about Anthrax not achieving the same commercial success as Metallica or Megadeth but they were still very influential and deserve to be part of the Big 4 Btw I broke 2 ribs in a pit in 1989 at a Metallica show when they were touring the Justice album haha 🧐✌️😎🤘
I saw them perform this last year and Joey Belladonna sounds WAY better now than he did back then. His vocals were on point. He's just talking on this video. The album version is even better.
My fav Anthrax song will prolly always be "I'm the Man". The sample from the Rodney Dangerfield movie Easy Money is absolutely brilliant. Love Scott and most everything he does, especially his stuff with Mr. Bungle.
Time to take the trip across the pond and listen to some German thrash,,, Their big 3; Destruction, Sodom and Kreator. Then some Venom and Celtic Frost from the UK & Switzerland (respectivly).
Quick second comment: the Among The Living album was released after Scott Ian and Charlie Benante recorded and released an album for a side project called S.O.D. (Stormtroopers Of Death). The album was called Speak English Or Die and was a Hardcore Punk influenced album. The band also included original Anthrax bass player Danny Lilker, who’d left Anthrax after their first album to join another band called Nuclear Assault that was started by another former Anthrax member and roadie, John Connelly. Scott Ian and Charlie Benante were still in S.O.D. mode when they were writing Among The Living so it has more of a hardcore edge than any other Anthrax album. This album is considered one of their best, but it’s a bit of an odd album compared to their other albums and probably wasn’t the best introduction to them.
Testament, practice what you preach , Alex Skolnick on lead guitar also has a degree in Jazz. Excellent player, excellent thrash band, just on the edge of the big four thrash bands. If you want to be blown away by sheer musicial talent on lead guitar, listen to the next song on the album called perilous nation, a master class in technique, sheer dexterity and taste.
Another thrash band you should check out is Dark Angel. Their nickname was 'The L.A. Caffeine Machine'. Even though Dark Angel were an influence on Slayer, they were unfortunately unable to break out of the underground. Dark Angel, for the most part, wrote intelligent lyrics & had one of the best drummers in the world, Gene Hoglan. Gene is known as 'The Atomic Clock'. Gene has even put out some instructional videos.
Do Indians please. I loved Anthrax when young. And been caught in a mosh. My glasses fell and the mosh instantly was stopped and everyone looking down to find my glasses. Sweetest mosh I've known. And also moshpits on Claude Francois cover band. French chanson moshing is awesome. Cheers.
I once got caught in a mosh to this (after many drinks). Enjoyable, but quite a few bruises the next day. I also once lost my shoe while watching Scorpions at a festival, luckily another guy picked it up straight away and handed me it.
Nice to see Doug listening to a "new-to-him" band. I swear the Patreon followers who recommend the tracks for Metal Mondays only know 6 bands between them.
Anthrax was from NYC. Their music always had a bit more grit than the other big 4 bands. They did get more mature with age. Off of Persistence of Time. I’d suggest Intro/Belly of the Beast. Off of their latest release, “For All Kings” I would suggest “You Gotta Believe”
Back when Scott still had long hair! I'm old, I remember when this came out! I think I was 9 or 10 the first time I got in a Mosh pit, the Older guys were impressed and looked out for me.
I don't always listen to Anthrax, but when I do, so do my neighbors.
Very nice. I like to say my neighbors listen to great music, whether they want to or not.

@@alphaenemyplus8376 ...and my dumb self just realized you said the name of the band. I mis-read as saying "trust me". D'oh!
This was my early youth. Loved it still do.
Anthrax is visceral. They don't jump through musical hoops or write songs with multiple sections. They are yellow mustard, not Grey Poupon. When they were struggling, they ate a "loser's lunch," which was a piece of baloney in your hand.
Metallica ate the loser’s lunch, when they were living in Anthrax’s rehearsal space while recording “Kill ‘Em All”.
@@lv-426paradise3 Not true. Read Scott's book.
@@brucebowling6032re-read chapter 6. Cliff Burton would eat raw hot dogs because they had no way to heat them and James was the one who ate ‘bologna on hand’.
Akshully, most songs on Among the Living have multiple sections.
Well said
Nice to hear some Anthrax on your channel Doug! this album always brings me back.
I absolutely love this song....
🤘🤘
Everytime Doug tries to do any fast air drums it looks like a 7 year old who just unwrapped a new Nintendo system on Christmas morning
It's great
If you want my recommendation for an Anthrax listen it would be Who Cares Wins from State of Euphoria. It's a deeper cut of their and I think one of their more interesting songs in terms of structure. Also has, I think, Dan Spitz' best solo included.
Just saw them last year with Black Label Society.
Been a fan of Anthrax since there first and Heaviest album
Fist Full of Metal.
Same! I went for the Meet & Greet package with Anthrax. One of the greatest days of my life...
Think Doug needs to listen to some BLS??
Who would have thought 1 year ago , we'd see the day where our Daily Doug be singing with stank face "Caught in a mosh" ! 🤘 That's gold mate , well done . Metal Doug is coming out with every episode , love it . 👍😁
Its very nice to see a classical composer react this way to thrash metal songs. Many people think that metal is just noise. 818 episodes AND NOT ONE ABOUT SEPULTURA. Pick one song from the past days (before Roots album) with Max Cavalera on the guitars and vocals. Start with "Desperate Cry" or anything from Arise album
ah, what an Oidivnikufesin! i love the whole thing so much 🥰🤘 Charlie Benante is one of my all-time heroes…
Anthrax was my introduction to Thrash metal. I'm glad you are reacting to an Anthrax song. They don't get the 'love' they deserve on RUclips.
Man I gotta say, I saw these guys just a couple months ago and they actually blew me away. The notes Belladonna can hit at his age….dude wtf!!! Band is tight as hell and besides not having Danny Spitz it was a darn near classic lineup! Just put a smile on my face!
Another Anthrax song I would recommend is “The Enemy” from their second album “Spreading the disease”
Check out Testament 🤘🏻
YES!!!! Testament are the real kings of thrash!!!!
They are so underated!
Testament should have been in the big 4. Sorry Anthrax.
@@scotth5114 Testament or Exodus. Both better than Anthrax
Testament, Exodus, S.O.D. were all better than Anthrax and Slayer.
I would recommend songs from the Anthrax record Persistence of Time. This record is more matured and a little bit darker than the precious records allthough Among the Living is the most popular record.
-Intro the reallity / Belly of the beast
-In my world
After Persistence they had a line up change and got an new singer John Bush and recorded Sound of white noise. Great record and def. different to the Joey Belladonna area.
-Only
-Invisible
-Black lodge (it's a kind of ballad).
Always been a big fan of Anthrax. One of my favorites was always Madhouse from Spreading the Disease.
Great review as always Doug. Now since you are listening to 1980s punk-influenced bands, you should check out the Stormtroopers Of Death (SOD), highly recommended.
Nicefukinlife, Anthrax!
I saw Anthrax with Fight (Rob Halford's band) at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park NJ. Oh what a night.
Thank you.
Soooo much good stuff from Anthrax. Even in the John Bush years. Got to meet them one backstage after a show in the Bush years.
A.I.R and Gung Ho are really fun! Medusa also has a really cool melody.
Anthrax's Among The Living album is a masterpiece of melodic goodness
great song! Please try anything by Anthrax feat Dime on guitar
Suggestions for more Anthrax: Madhouse, Medusa, Be All End All.
Great review. I agree they were the weakest link of the 4 and you explained it well. I’m a fan and saw them live. Very fun band to see live 🤘
Check out Intro To Reality / Belly Of The Beast off the album Persistence Of Time. Lots of neat stuff going on there. Probably their best album overall.
“Caught in a Mosh” probably isn’t the best spot to start… it’s relatively one-dimensional.
Try these:
“Intro to Reality / Belly of the Beast”
“Antisocial”
“Only”
“Taking the Music Back”
“Fight Em Til You Can’t”
“In the End”
STORMTROOPERS OF DEATH- a nice little side project from a couple of the guys from ANTHRAX
Please add the band Overkill to your thrash/metal bucket. Something from the first 4 albums. They are a must listen.
I saw them perform this last year and Joey Belladonna sounds WAY better now than he did back then. His vocals were on point. He's just talking on this video. The album version is even better.
Yes! Anthrax is my favorite band! You have to listen to more Jason Becker though! How about Serrana?
ANTHRAX has two Modes, Party Fun & Serious - Check the Album ' Persistence of Time '
Madhouse or Got the Time. Frank Bello's bass tone on the entire Persistence of Time record is amazing.
One year at Sonisphere the big four were all playing. Anthrax were absolutely the most fun band of the four.
WARDANCE!!!!!! 🤘
Real fans of music help each other out if you ask me, so good to hear : )
Unless I'm mistaken, I was at this show: Santa Monica Civic auditorium. Kirk Hammet guested on the encore of Anarchy In The UK.
Spitz is my buddy. Great dude.
Back when Scott still had long hair! I'm old, I remember when this came out! I think I was 9 or 10 the first time I got in a Mosh pit, the Older guys were impressed and looked out for me.
