My grandpa would shine his shoes every Sunday for church and I miss the sound of him brushing the shoes so much it hurts. This reminds me so much of that and really brought back great memories of him. I know it's not the usual comment but thanks for what you do.

@@VETIVER thank you so much, I still own his kit and it's very well taken care. He did it every Sunday without fail for over 70 years and I continued for him after he passed. Your videos have brought me great joy, memories, and comfort. Again thank you for what you do. Your work is very impressive and skilled. My grandpa would have loved watching your videos I'm sure of it.

Kind of in the same vein as P. Carr’s poignant comment, my father died in 1970 when I was eight years old, and he had been very ill for a few years before his death, so my memories of him are few and seem to grow dimmer with the passage of time. However, I DO remember that he taught me three skills: how to fly a kite, how to trim hedge bushes, and--how to shine shoes. For many years I didn’t bother to shine my shoes but about 15 years ago I started to pay more attention to my dress, and shining shoes became a part of my routine. Almost immediately this activity took on a meditative, ritualistic, near-spiritual quality for me. I remember my father telling me to make liberal use of the horsehair brush, “the shoe shiner’s best friend,” he said. He told me that he personally preferred a softer shine on his shoes, rather than a hard, bright mirror-finish obtained by use of the buffing cloth. The brush-shine was what he liked, and he taught me to use a back-and-forth motion coming in at a somewhat steep angle calculated to make the bristles contact the shoe stiffly, almost as if they were ‘hitting’ or ‘stabbing’ the shoe--but not violently. He explained that this technique made the polish harder and more protective. Much later I learned that my father had briefly worked as a shoe shine boy during his high school days, so apparently his instruction was the product of some experience.
I now regard shining shoes as a rare way I can honor and memorialize my dad, a man who lost his life at so young an age (38).

its very unwise to put shoepolish on cordovan shoes, and if you do so, use the smallest amount of polish and only twice a year max, what we are looking at here is terrible on cordovan leather.Cordovan shines up rather easily and the leather is sort of fatty already, this means that you do not have to apply polish as frequently as like you would on calf leather shoes. 1 or 2 times polish a year is really enough. When applying the polish, use a little bit and finish by using a horsehair brush. Cordovan benefits a lot from extensive brushing, even without the use of a wax. Brushing a cordovan shoe for a couple of minutes will bring it back to life!

@@peterhgalloway There was Colour clearly missing and he used Saphir Cordovan cream which is specific for cordovan leather. Nothing wrong with what he did.

Just an observation from watching a few of your videos... when you say “another pair” referring to the second shoe after the first one is done, what an English language person would say instead is “the other shoe.” When you say “another pair,” to an English language person, what that means is a totally different set of two shoes. It doesn’t mean the “other shoe in this pair.” You could also say “the second shoe.” Hope that makes sense and is helpful.

I’m a little worried about the ripples in the leather and if they will become bothersome for me since I didn’t break the shoe in. Is there any risk of creating worse looking ripples by doing this? Although I respect all the craftsmanship you displayed, the before and after shots are not completely comparable. In all the ‘after’ shots you leave the wooden shoe trees in, whilst in the before shots you don’t. That gives a significant difference in the shape of the shoe without having done anything to it. To show the true and honest result of your work, I would suggest to leave the shoes trees out in both shots.

What is 'delicate cream'? The one you applied after working for hours with the deer bone. Is it some sort of conditioner? Where can I get the 'welted' bone? Usually you find only the 'normal' deer bone.

Conditioner. Check online for the bone.

@@vaderladyl thx. have gotten both. worked the bone for quite a while and the shoes were like in the clip again. however, after a few steps the pleats were back again.

Why do you brush the shoes? Could you show the difference between "without brushing" and "with brushing"?

The brush helps to loosen up dust and dirt. And to polish them.
