The Jaipur Metro is a rapid transit system in the city of Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.Construction on the mostly elevated part of the first line, called Phase 1A, comprising 9.63 kilometres (5.98 mi) of route from Mansarovar to Chandpole Bazaar, started in November 2010, and was completed in 2014. The Jaipur Metro began commercial service between Chandpole and Mansarovar on 3 June 2015. The Jaipur Metro Rail system is India's sixth metro rail system after those in Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore, Gurugram and Mumbai. The Jaipur Metro is the first metro in India to run on triple-storey elevated road and metro track. Phase 1-B, from Chandpole to Badi Chaupar, began operation on 23 September 2020.
The metro railway was not required in Jaipur till 2025, said a Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report on Rajasthan government’s performance during 2016-17. The report, which was tabled in the Rajasthan Assembly during the monsoon session on 5 September, indicted the state government for taking the decision in haste and failing to choose the appropriate technology for Jaipur Metro. The Jaipur Metro Railway Corporation (JMRC), seen as a ‘failed’ project, is struggling to meet operational expenses every year due to decreasing ridership. The performance of phase 1A of Jaipur Metro - started in June 2015 - was poor as the average ridership during the first 22 months was just 19.17 per cent of projected ridership. With operating revenue of Rs 18.87 crore, JMRC was unable to meet its operating expenses of Rs 85.56 crore for the first 22 months, said the report.

I am from Jaipur and I have used it only once that too just to experience it. The simple reason for its failure is the route chosen. The route and stations are not chosen wisely. We were shocked to know why they are operating on this route, no technicalities required to understand this, even a thelawala near these points could have helped the government to understand the traffic. They should have targeted Crowded route like Tonk Road, Vaishali Nagar, Mansarovar etc.

    1. Metro line is very small, It needs to be expanded, otherwise people won't use it for such small section.
    2. It covered 0 tourist places, so i travelled using Auto and cabs.
    3. Jaipur City is not dense, the only traffic congested part i found was the area around Hawa Mahal, and there is no metro line nearby it.

Population density you said, isn't the critical issue with Jaipur metro..Jaipur has enough population density to have a feasible metro system..Any metro system can't be stated a failure in its initial phases..Currently most of indian metro systems (except Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Benguluru, Kolkata which are having vast network) like Lucknow, Kanpur, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Nagpur, Pune, Chennai are facing low footfall problems due to small network. Currently Ahmedabad metro is carrying only 2k commuters daily on a line of 6kms, Kanpur metro carrying abt 10k on 8.5 kms line. JAIPUR METRO IS CARRYING AROUND 30K COMMUTERS EVERYDAY ON JUST A LINE OF 12 KMs WHICH ISN'T TOO BAD. JUST NEEDS FAST EXPANSION OF NETWORK. Every Indian city having population 30 lac + can have an effiecient metro system but that isn't possible by operating metro on single small stretch, the thing with jaipur metro. You will have to interconnect maximum parts of city to ensure LAST MILE CONNECTIVITY...JAIPUR IS 10TH MOST POPULOUS CITY OF INDIA WITH POPULATION OF ABT 45 LACS. PUBLIC TRANSPORT OF JAIPUR IS WORST ACCORDING TO ITS POPULATION. I HAVE HEARD MANY PEOPLE WHO LIVE HERE OR VISIT HERE , COMPLAINING THAT JAIPUR IS SUCH A HUGE CITY BUT ITS PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS RUNNING ON JUST MINI BUSES OR RIKSHAWs. A CITY LIKE JAIPUR NEEDS EFFICIENT 500+ LOW FLOOR BUSES BUT NOT EVEN HALF OF THAT ARE RUNNING REGULARLY. AT THE SAME TIME IT NEEDS ABOUT 150 KMs METRO NETWORK.
Let me clear you that Delhi metro is considered to be one of the best succesful metro systems in world. But do you know when its first stretch of abt 8-9 kms was opened in 2002-03, its average daily ridership was just around 25k. Currently same data are of jaipur metro. Raj govt just constructed a 9km strectch for their political benifits & didn't intend to expand its network. Delhi metro kept expanding their network and within 17-18 years after commencing first strech, they constructed abt 300km of metro lines. Length of every line of delhi metro averages 30+ kms connecting the end shores of city & all of them are interconnected, that's the best thing about them. And currently around 4.5 million people are using it daily. What it shows "LAST MILE CONNECTIVITY & INTERCONNECTIVITY OF LINES IS THE KEY TO MAKE ANY PUBLIC TRANSPORT FEASIBLE AND EFFIECIENT." And this feasibility & efficeiency can't be achieved by constructing just a 9 km stretch, you will have to expand the network at max pace. 1st phase of jaipur metro of abt 9.5 km was opened in June 2015 and now in 2022, it is running only on a track of abt 12km. Only 3 km hike in huge time span of 7 years...Too pathetic..Shows the apathy of state govt towards this project...Biggest cause is Vansundhara's tenure where she put brakes on its development stating it infeasible. However Gahlot Govt showed little intention in budget 2019-2020 saying that govt is making DPR of phase 2 of 13000 crores but it wasn't enough to get back everything on track. Later same Gahlot Govt too neglected the phase 2 & now planning phase 1C-D of only 4km just to show that metro is still in their ambitious projects. STATE GOVT'S APATHY IN CONSTRUCTING FURTHER PHASES OF METRO IS THE BIGGEST CAUSE OF ITS CURRENT PATHETIC SITUATUON.Yet another reason, most of the Indian metros are being built as joint venture of centre & state govts in 50:50 partnership. In case of Rajasthan (jaipur metro), being different parties govts in state & centre also adds fuel to the fire. Centre govt is sanctioning funds to the states where ruling govt is of their party. Centre govt is discriminating rajasthan so badly that they never even visit rajasthan, providing fund is too far from it. Though state govt should learn from Hyderabad Metro. They constructed metro on PPP model with great pace & currently Hyderabad have 2nd largest operational network in the country. Also every city planning for metro should learn from them. Hyderabad metro has the record of longest opening metro line (30km) in country. How rapidly they constructed 3 lines which are well interconnected providing max utility of any line. And result is that Hyderabad metro is carrying over 3.5 lac commuters daily on just a network of 70kms. IF GOVT PRIORITISE CONSTRUCTING AN EFFICIENT METRO NETWORK FOR JAIPUR, THE EXISTING PINK LINE CAN BE EXTENDED FURTHER TO SOME EXTENT, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY IT NEEDS CONSTRUCTION ON MORE LINES LIKE FROM "VISHWAKARMA INDUSTRIAL AREA TO SITAPURA INDUSTRIAL AREA VIA VIDHYADHAR NAGAR, SINDHI CAMP, RAMBAGH PALACE, TONK ROAD, AIRPORT etc. OTHER LINE FROM "HARMADA TO SANGANER VIA MURLIPURA, JHOTWADA, KHATIPURA, VAISHALI NAGAR, MANSAROVER etc. & THESE LINES CAN BE INTERCONNECTED BY EXISTING PINK LINE. IF GOVT SHOWS INTREST IN CONSTRUCTING SUCH LINES, JAIPUR METRO WILL COME OUT TO BE LIFELINE OF JAPURITES AS OF DELHI. Jaipur is the 6th metro system of India but ironically it is the smallest among 12-13 operational metros.(However Ahmedabad and Kanpur have initial 6 & 8 km stretches but soon they will have 25km+ network) Comparitavely equal or smaller cities than Jaipur like Indore, Bhopal, Nagpur, Lucknow, Kanpur etc are commencing the metro network at faster pace & consequently jaipur will be way behind of all of them.

The Jaipur Metro can not be tagged as an unsuccessful metro so early. The initial condition of line 1 of DMRC was also same. The JMRC needs its route expansion specially its 2nd phase ( Sitapura to ambabari) early as soon as possible. Once the metro route will expand, the Jaipur metro ridership will increase rapidly. The Jaipur city is the most growing city of India. Therefore proper transport facilities like metro is the most important. We love the Pink city. Jai Hind

Ye project tab successful hoga jab tarike se Pure shahar me hi Metro line ki connectivity rahegi like Sitapura IA se VKI tak, Vaishali se Jagatpura tak etc. Jab Govt. ne thik se project banaya hi nahi aadhe me hi chor diya, cus of Politics to Public kaha se use karegi. we usually use AC or NON AC city buses kyoki Unki Connectvity zyada aachi or broad network me hai.

Being a transport planner, I can say that a metro line of less than 10 km is not going to solve any problem. Jaipur is a big city with an area of 467 square km. This city needs at least a 250 km network of the metro. Although Jaipur is not densely populated it receives very high foreign and domestic tourism. You can definitely construct a successful metro network. Kochi Metro, Lucknow metro are also facing the same problem just because the network is too small.
Our politicians constructed small networks in multiple cities so they can just brag about that we have a metro rail network in 14 cities. But the reality is that they are too small except Delhi. All other cities need expansion.

You have to start somewhere. Delhi metro only had 39 km long line when it started, but got expanded with time. With all major cities having a functional line, the next step is expansion. The problem is lack of proper planning and data verification. If you are going to build 10 km long line, you should consider all of your options and try to connect all the areas that have heavy traffic between them, like tourist spots, office areas, railway stations, residential areas and the likes. You can build 100 km long line but it will be useless if you don't plan it out properly.

When i visited jaipur i felt the same way traveling through metro, people dont really go for it, the problem which i feel are,
The line doesn't connect to any major attraction of the city neither the industrial areas, the timing of metro operation is very bad, 😅even as traveller i felt it was very early to close, i loved the whole city vibe and the people are nice too, the markets are very beautiful and i enjoyed traveling it with metro, however the line is very small 😅 i think they should connect it with the attractions like amer palace and other heritage sites, wish metro would succeed there, its my main mode of transport here in delhi and i rely on it so much.

I feel Phase 2 should be implemented. Phase 2 would be of 23.5 kms with completion targeted at 2026-27. It will be developed till India Gate near Sitapura Industrial Township which will also give Metro connectivity to Jaipur International Airport. It will pass through some slightly more dense areas like Pratapnagar etc.
This will help total network length expand upto around 34 kms.
Phase 2 can be targeted at being completed by 2027.
After that State Govt. can give remaining expansion plans a pause till the time network density doesn't reach a certain level. If after Phase 2, popularity increase of Metro, then further plans can be extended.
In the meanwhile, Focus should be given on Last Mile connectivity like Jaipur Metro can get Dedicated E-buses like DMRC to connect popular tourist spots like Hawa Mahal, Jal Mahal, Museums to nearby Metro Stations, possibly develop Shopping complexes within stations itself like a few station of Delhi Metro have done & Jaipur Metro can lease out shopping places to companies, restaurants etc. which will help the Metro earn a good revenue etc.
Phase 3 can be implemented in 2030's where a line from Jal Mahal to Ram Bagh Circle can be constructed based on population density, growth of revenue from the region etc.

Great video. This is actually a very serious issue. Massive capital being poured into unviable Metro projects which are only vanity projects. All political parties support it because ultimately they feel people want it and see it as a symbol of "development". But transport experts have been pointing out that almost no city fulfils the transport demand for a Metro and ridership has been consistently much lower than projected in the DPRs - including for Delhi the "successful" Metro. Nagpur, Lucknow, Jaipur and now Pune will join the list of failed Metro projects but will be showcased as being successful by the powerful DMRC PR engine supported by politicians who will not admit their mistake. Ultimately people will have to pay the price for these white elephants.

Although i was travelling with backup time limit of 2 hrs so i didn't get late to reach my exam centre.

A more appropriate approach would be comparing the services per capita rather than the absolute number. Anyway, the BRTS should've been explored more to deal with the public transport issue but the new govts wanted the shiny new toy to brag about. Metro is costly and a Tier-2 city like Jaipur won't ensure sufficient ROI when even big cities like Hyderabad and Chennai are struggling to sufficiently fill their metro trains. Expansion won't happen unless there is enough windfall revenue from the existing network and poor planning means that it's not going to happen in the foreseeable future.

Population is not the issue. The main problem is the metro is not connected to any industrial area, college area, Bazar area, most important tourist attractions. If they built the metro line in old jaipur which has mainly tourist attractions then it will be successful because of tourists and also schools college students those go travel daily in the jaipur city for education. The traffic issue is mainly on the old jaipur because of less space.

The planned phase 3 route had a passenger traffic of around 1.5L to 2L people before covid(now it is around 50k to 1L due to WFH scenario), while the passenger traffic on the partially completed phase 1 and phase 2 routes hardly would be around 10K.

And 90% of population have their own vehicle and are habitual using own vehicles since 4-5 decades.

Light metro does run faster than 50-60kmph if I'm not wrong.
On the other hand a metro system like this would run at 85 + kmph.
Also Jaipur's population is high also area wise it's a big city.
Brisbane in Australia has smaller population than Jaipur but it also has commuter rail along with light rail.
But a lot of English speaking countries use light rails, because their cities are small, but suburbs are widespread.

To sustain a matro, tourists could play a vital role, but the distribution of metro line is so unplanned that a person does not need to travel in it.
