    Lol, you're bringing back memories of when we were excited for super basic LCD watches. Remember those pens with a digital clock on them? 😂

    I have that watch; it's beautiful and one of my favorites. I've been using it more than a year and it works perfectly. Found it on Amazon, in fact you can buy red, blue and green LED models

  • @SilverSpade92
    @SilverSpade92 Год назад +7

    Fun fact: Blue LEDs didn't exist until the early 90's, so not only were 70's era LED watches not built with them, they literally couldn't be.

      I have a 1960s calculator with a greenish-blue display but it has Nixie tubes and not LEDs. Blue displays were possible but not with LEDs and certainly not in a small form factor.

    Very nice piece of nostalgia! The bracelet is exactly like you see on some retro Casio's. Simple but secure and comfortable.

    Just got one of these for $5 on clearance at walmart and came to youtube to find some videos on it. I was hoping for red, but all the ones they had were blue.

    Of all the Armitrons I've seen, this is the only one that has caught my interest. Sadly don't have this one at my local Walmart, but every other Armitron they have in stock are marked down.

    Wow. $10 is a great price for the Griffy. I paid $99 for mine when it first came out.

    At $10 you got an absolute bargain there Greg! I paid much more for my gold coloured "Griffy" with red LEDs. Of course, not so easy to source Armitron, here in Scotland, from the US. However, Amazon UK do have some models...

    If only one brand made it really like the 70's LED. With LED that show the numbers in LED dots instead of the 7 segmented numbers. And with a red ruby coloured crystal. That would be perfect for me.

    So glad to see you review an Armitron. I have this watch with the green LED. I love it. I also have the Armitron Rubik, a worthy competitor to the Casio A158. Same terrible backlight as the A158 and F91W but in an actual metal, full stainless steel case and with a 50m water rating. Very nice finish and quality, dare I say... better value than Casio. Also, you must live next to the best Walmart for watches in the country. I never find any worthy watch bargains at my Walmart. Another great video as always.

    There's a new model by Armitron, similar to this, but kind of retro futuristic, if it makes sense. It's called "Tetra"...looks great.

    Wow, you got a steal on this for $10!! The griffeys were going for 30-something on Armitron’s site when I bought mine, yet for some reason the one I wanted - the stainless steel with blue led like yours - was $70! I overpaid by a lot but don’t mind.
    I only wear it once in a rare while but it is such a cool watch.

    I bought this watch months ago after seeing the brand as a prize on a rerun of Classic Concentration. I searched to see if Armitron still existed, then saw this watch and thought it was a cool cheap version of the expensive Hamilton reissue

  • @FiremanFrach

    Armitron is highly underrated. I got an Armitron Horizon. Great for a beater watch and dirt cheap. A $55.00 watch I got for $13.00 at Walmart.

    Greg what are the two letters that precede the number "2032" on the watch battery in the Armitron Griffy LED digital watch? Are the two letters "CR"? Also, is the way you remove the battery in order to replace the battery in the Armitron Griffy watch with a new battery to simply click the small silver metal latch upwards and then slide the silver metal latch to the left and then tilt the battery to remove it from watch case?

  • @spankyharland9845
    @spankyharland9845 2 года назад

    like those old red LED Pulsar watches in the late 70's- I never did like a watch that you had to press a button to check the time, usually the other hand is busy .

  • @michaelbarlow6610
    @michaelbarlow6610 10 месяцев назад

    I own the black ion-plated version of Armitron Griffy LED watch that has red LEDs. It is very nice and keeps excellent time but has two major drawbacks - first, the watch lacks a day-of-the-week indicator and in order to view the current year indicator you have to press and hold down the lower right button to enter the setting mode and then repeatedly press that button until the year flashes on and off on the LED screen. They should have designed that watch so that you could view the year indicator by repeatedly pressing the top button rather than having to view it by entering the setting mode via the bottom button. Also, on my watch the clasp won't adjust so I couldn't slide the clasp up the metal bracelet to fit my wrist, so I had to add pieces of superstrong adhesive T-Rex black tape to make the watch fit my wrist which has the benefit of adding some desirable extra weight to the watch, thereby making it feel more substantial!

    Hi, Greg! I marvel at how practical-minded your approach to watches is on this channel. Is there any way I could persuade you to take a look at the Casio W201 in a video? Thanks in advance!

    It's a steal that twice that price, that being $20. They're on Amazon and Walmart currently for about $31. I like your $10 deal better, I think I'll go to walmart. Maybe I'll get lucky.

    Is the writing on the front of the watch removable? I want to get one, but I hate that writing on the front. I had one something like this with a brushed stainless steel face and a black leather band. I was 10, it was 1975, and the watch cost under $10.

    It's a blast. I really like it. Tho, because of that prominent push down crown, I suppose it should be worn higher on the wrist, so accidental pushes with the back of the palm wouldn't happen? Or maybe it's actually planned to work like that? Move the wrist up and it lights up?
    Eh, Greg, you really should've included the wrist shot.

    nice review! thank you
    I don't mean to sound like a curmudgeon, but I don't think the original LED watches worked like this new one, but I could be wrong.
    The LEDs would light up the time only as long as you pushed the button. Once you let go of the button, the screen would dim. There was no 5 second B.S.
    Also, when you selected the seconds on an original LED watch, it would continue to stay lit until you pushed the button again. How do you expect to count the seconds when you can only do it for 5 seconds and then have to cycle back to it? Again, I could be wrong.

    It's purely a fashion choice; things like "practicality" are as meaningless as the practicality of a friendship bracelet. Love your content, Greg, but you need to lighten up sometimes - not all watches are intended to appeal to technical geeks.

      I hope I’m generally lighthearted about these things. The truth is, I wore this watch a lot for a few weeks after I bought it… and then switched to other watches when I had to go work in the field more.

    If it fits a small adult that's teen sized then I could by it or what I called funsized because I am stuck looking like a kid apparently some of these watches are cool but too big for my wrist I'd prefer keeping a retro watch on me and not spoiling myself wiith Smartwatches all you need is a watch like this by theory Smartwatches are inferior and mediocre battery life.

    • @SynMonger
      @SynMonger Год назад +1

      It's not a huge wristwatch . It's comparable in size to the Casio A158. Middle of the road, looks big on a small wrist, small on a big wrist.

      @@SynMonger Thank you I am on the hunt for LED watches and I'd prefer their durability over a Smartwatch I'm tired of charging them rinse and repeat and only want my Smartphone. Half the things on a Smartwatch can be already done through your Smartphone and there is just no need for it I would rather go the retro watch route because they look more stylish than the cheap screen displays on Smartwatches mine is an LED bracelet but I want something like this because these things look and feel futuristic as well.

    I guess it,s a case of whatever floats ya boat but these types of watches are poor imitations of the real thing. There's no substitute for a good old red wire bond or dot matrix display.I can only liken it to finding a nice Jaguar sports car and finding it has a 1.3 litre engine under the hood. IMO that display is hideous.
