- Hi Guys, This video is all about Vintage LED Watches and the ones currently in my collection. These are a great addition to a watch collector as they were only around for a few years before LCD arrived on the scene. They are really cool watches and I am slightly addicted to the red lights. You can only imagine how these must have looked back in the 70s.

Thank you for sharing your collection Mike, it's awesome! They're a perfect example of how great design aesthetic never goes out of style.... the LEDs might sadly die over time but I'd proudly wear any of those watches on my arm right now & enjoy the inevitable questions & compliments. Because there's thousand of people with Rolex, etc in the world today but _very few_ with LED timepieces 😎👍
My first digital watch was in 1975 during the Space 1999 tv series. I was so intrigued by the digital display and dreamed of a camera on it for communication like the video communicators on that TV show.
Back in the day, around 76’, I had an early Russian built LCD watch. It weighed a ton and constantly missed up. It didn’t last long, the display started to decay and go dusty inside and that really was the end of that. Interestingly, the watch my grandfather gave me (Rotary) when I was around 10 still works and keeps good time thanks to a recent service. Your LCD watches maybe slightly earlier and are real survivors 🤗

When digital watches first came out in the early 1970's they were GROUNDBREAKING.
The first LCD watch was the Seiko 06LC which went on sale in 1973. Then my favorite watch brand Casio fetched out the Casiotron in 1974.

I was thinking Cylon before you even said it! I have a soft spot for the LED watches, as my very first watch was an LED. Still wish I had it...trying to buy it now is expensive, if it's even found in working order. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
These are very very cool! My favorite is the one you don't know anything about, looks so sleek!
Always liked these. Delt in them for years...just got Gillette red LED reflex with box & instructions for $3 lol. Putting a battery in it tomorrow. These go for a pretty penny ;)

My first "real" watch (i.e. not a 18mm Mickey Mouse watch) was a Texas Instruments LED watch. Man, I loved that thing. Got it for my birthday in (I think) 1978 or 79. It was the cool thing for nerds to have in high school. As I recall, it met its end when I tried to replace the battery and cracked the case trying to get the caseback back on. :(

Loved the video, my first watch was an LED Trafalga the 50p piece shaped one. my parents bought it for me as a Christmas Present around 1976 I think. I still have it somewhere probably in the loft and now after seeing this video I need to find it.

Nice collection! I collect vintage watches as well and I have some LED too. The unbranded watch (the one you said you can't find a brand even on the case) is a Litronix.
Hughes modules were never used by Time Computer Inc. (the company that made Pulsar watches). Pulsar LEDs used proprietary modules. On the other hand, Hughes Aircraft supplied modules for many many companies, including CompuChron, which was a brand owned by the American company Unisonic. The cases and bracelets were made by Bear in Japan. Trafalgar LED watches instead used National Semiconductor modules.
Hello and thanks for your informative comment. I have learnt something. I am not sure what I said in the video without rewatching it, so if I said that Pulsar used Hughes then I was wrong as I knew they were in Compuchron so I must have got my wires crossed. I do love the LED watches, Nostalgia and the big kid in me I guess.
I bought one quite a few years ago, the make is X-ray. Interesting because the maker had purchase NOS '70s LED displays and married them to modern boards that use a 3v lithium battery. I still have it and wear it occasionally. Not sure if they still make them but the last time I saw them for sale they now have modern displays. Some cool watches you have there.
Such a cool watch and the time set with a magnet is mind blowing! I have a Texas Instruments red glass LED I grabbed at an Antiques Mall and was hoping that putting a battery in might make it work but I can't get it to do anything. I am going post it on the Watch Group and see if anyone has any ideas.
I love your channel and your watches, as a child of the seventies they bring back the excitement of the era. In about 1978 I spent all my pocket money on an LED watch in Woolworths and I still have it. 'Six Million Dollar Man' was all the rage and the watch has 'Bionic' on it. If you can tell me where I can buy a battery for this dear old beauty I would be so grateful The joy of wearing it again would be ... well ... groovy. Thank you for sharing your collection
thanks. I cant really help you with the battery without knowing the hole size etc. all batteries have codes which are easy to find once you have them .

Thank you. The Computron needs a polish again as the gold has worn off and its a brass case . I have a stainless case and bracelet thinking I could swap the module but its actually a smaller module!

I was a teenager in the 70's. I had my favorite watch I have been looking for, for quite awhile. It was a red LED watch and when you twisted your wrist to look at the time, it lit up automatically. I think it was called the Timex Twist? It was as basic as these watches got, but I loved that watch the only thing that came close was my Casio Databank, back in the 70's/80's that calculator was handy and you could save a bunch of names and phone numbers. Two watches of my youth, but the red LED retro watches are usually priced out of my range, but spending more for a 70's then I would for a brand new Pixel Watch is just makes no sense. Thanks for the showing of your fine watches.
As a fan of both vintage computers and vintage watches, I would love to own a Sinclair Black Watch someday.
It would actually be an ideal candidate for a Kickstarter project. The case could be 3D printed pretty easily, and would probably be better quality than the original.
In the mid 80's I had a digital watch that I can not find any where . It had a screen that scrolled across. I think the time sat still and when you pushed a button then it moved to the side and would than show the date. Today I got a Timex Indiglow in the mail. Most of the watches I wore in the 80's were Armitron, I bought each for my birthday.
Very interesting and some nice watches, I vote for a reshoot however and it needs to be presented from a Sinclair c5 whilst wearing said flowery shirt and flares. 😆

Great video, thanks for posting. These watches bring back great memories for me. Back in the late 60's my Dad was transferred from Hughes Aircraft Co Sepulveda, to the then new Hughes Aircraft Micro Electronics division in Newport Beach, CA. Pops was the production manager for the digital watch modules which came out in about 1973. He gave them to everyone in our family and of course I got a couple of them. The first one was an early dot matrix 2 button module in a generic Swiss case which I quickly broke (hey, I was only a kid 16 years of age, ha!) The watch displayed the time with one button, the other button showed the day of the month but not the month itself, and pressing both buttons showed the seconds. The next one was a segment module that showed the month and the date with the lower button, but all other functions operated with the top function button.
I remember wearing the watch to school, I was a junior in high school. Not too many kids seemed to notice or care about it but my teacher wanted to know how I could afford such an expensive watch, ha!
Wish I still had my original dot matrix LED watch that Dad gave me, but recently I found one just like it online. The module is stamped "Hughes Aircraft Co. Assembled in Mexico" and came in the original box with instructions, It looks like new and works perfectly. The watch transports me back in time whenever I put it on ;
wow what a story and family connection. I dont know much about the Hughes modules other than they were used in many brands and are very bright. It is a real shame you still dont have it but thats the problem, when we were all kids we were not thinking about out 50 year old self in years to come.

They do come in a Stainless version. I actually see more of those than I do of the Trafalgars on eBay (when I am looking)

Wonderful collection you have! Very lucky steal on that P4. I have been trying to find a good priced vintage LED watch on the market, but have not been successful. Out of my own collection, I only have one led watch, a mint-looking Timex SSQ for $10, but sadly it is not working. The board was corroded and even after cleaning and putting in a new correct battery, t still did not work. Any suggestions on what I should do from here? I know Timex's are relatively inexpensive and may not be worth fixing, but I really like the look of this particular watch and want to see if I can salvage it.

I've just bought an ancient Keinzle (mid 70s) - it appears to have the identical 'movement' to the Trafalgar (2nd from last).
It was properly playing up when it arrived - but a clean out, new batteries and a gentle rush of compressed air seem to have stabilised it.
Can you possibly explain how to set the minutes - date and hour sorted, but can't adjust the minutes. 🤷♂
I can set the hours (simply by pressing the 'hidden' pin - but everything else seems a bit random.

That's a truly impressive collection of retro-futuristic weird and wonderfulness, Mike. Stylish too, a lot of them, in my opinion - and very wearable if you're going to a Space 1999 convention, say. :-) Hope the flooding hasn't caused too much damage and disruption in the workshop.
haha Space 1999 Convention , you are right though many designs of these were bonkers but for me lovely for that reason. Wait for my video (coming soon) on my Jump Hour watches as some of those are even crazier

I had a very cheap LED digital watch when I was a kid. I remembered that it ate batteries.
There's this modern retro led watch on ebay and the case is chrome plated . never owned a watch with a chrome plated case. Do you think it's durable?
Love the Pulsar - and I remember the Bond movie scene, with the men's version of this watch, it was Roger Moore's first scene as Bond in Live and Let Die.
I really must watch the old Bond movies again! Pulsar is cool and would have been so much sweeter if it had been a mans.

Cheers Pal, Yes the magnate is cool, apparently usually lost over time so I am lucky I guess. How it works though I have no idea (yet )
@@MyRetroWatches All buttons on the Pulsar use magnets. They actuate what is called a Reed switch. In the Pulsar, the switch closes in the presence of a magnetic field and opens when there is none (some reed switches operate in reverse, open when the magnetic field is present, and close when there is none).

Amzing that first digital watch casio hamilton pulsar was not just simple black digit wtach but it was a bright red LED watch .must consume lot battery..way expensive that time ....same like a watch i watched in a film "hills have eyes series" i think in series 3..the guy wering same watch but it was written "avatar" on it

I have an old LED, and it works great, except the timing or speed of the watch needs to be adjusted. Is it possible, or do I need to just keep it in the drawer?
Could you adjust the trimmer capacitor of the oscillator? It will look like a circular or octagonal component with a slotted screw or square to turn it. The shape of the trimmer varies depending on the module.
Trial and error, which direction makes fast or slow. But turn the screw slowly and in very, VERY small increments.
Take a photo or mark the original position of the screw, just in case. No guarantees but worth a shot.

I Have come across a couple NOS Fairchild watches would like to change batteries cant find any info on changing don't want to attempt without some guidance -screw back or pop off any place you can point me
The Eastern Block during the 70s-80s also produced LED watches- the Soviet made Elektronika watches and the Bulgarian made Buletronic. I think that these brands will be a fine edition to your LED watch collection, if you could get your hands on one of them.
Imagine if retro watches became Smartwatches and you still had a good screen someone needs to look into this we would be in the future I would love to work for these vintage companies for that.
Did you look into getting modern replacement modules? There are LED watches on the market from Bulova, Armitron etc these days so they are sourcing the modules from somewhere.
No . I don’t think some of the modern ones are compatible or work in the same way. I have seen a few new ones and actually have the Hamilton PSR in for review and the led just the way it lights up is different.
The originals will always be nicer in my opinion

Great video. Mike... The first watch is a Compu chron. Computron is the Bulova side view model. The ladies model you have is a 2407-1 Cushion not a P4. The P4 was from the Men's Auto command range. The Executive / Classic / Big time.
Hi, The watch you mention at 8.01, I had one! Bought it from a shop in Tottenham Court Road London in 1976. I have no idea of the make and sadly lost it when I moved abroad 3 years ago. However, at least the date maybe helpful in your research? Thanks for the video.
I have an Electronika Pulsar, on the first button it displays the time and switch to seconds if you keep it pressed, if you push the second button it displays the date and the number of the day of the week (1 for monday 2 is tursday etc…)
Sorry accidentally deleted my post. Here it is again. Great video especially as I love 1970's led's. I have a sizeable collection of Pulsars - my favourite. The best in my view is the P3 in steel, I have a few in steel and gold filled (more robust than gold plate). The P3 (mans version of the ladies P4 you have - don't sell it as it is works and will complement the P3 when you get it!). The P3 started in 1971 and had the highly desirable led dots - not bars. As you say always ensure the watch has the correct module for the release date. A bar led in the P3 has a much lower value and many sellers put in these less desirable modules. There is a company that will transpose the dot display into a new manufactured module to produce a replacement dot P3. Inside the watch are two sets of reed switches. One set are for setting the time and this is why you may have issues with the magnet, it may be too weak to close the contacts inside the glass reed switch. The buttons that display the time are also little magnets that operate the time reed switches. Be Andy
Wow thanks for your insight there Andy, really appreciate this. I had been wondering how the magnate worked so now I know. To be honest I am sure when I originally set the time on it I used a stronger magnate on my work bench. I always thought the mens was also a P4 so I stand corrected on that too. I have heard of the rebuild modules and I think its Strikes & Spares over in Europe somewhere from memory.

Hi, I have a JAZ watch with LEDs, bur the pusher to make time appear does not work ! As it is used as well to set the time, I cannot even adjust the time. It is a pity, and I am afraid there can't be lots of people able to repair it.

I bought one of those Commodore watches from Dixon's in 1977 for £18. The battery didn't last and all these LED jobs are difficult to read in very bright sunshine .
Indeed, in sunlight dont as me the time. Still the Commodore is now very collectible probably by us guys who knew them first time around.

I'm 61, and back in the 70s I had a Texas Instruments LED Watch with a black plastic case. Sadly long gone now!
In 1996 I bought a Trafalgar LED with chrome case (no bracelet) from a local Antique Centre for £12.00. I put fresh silver oxide (not alkaline) batteries in it yesterday, after sitting with old batteries in it for YEARS! Works great!
Are you sure about the indication, because unusually, my watch has a dot for AM. Obviously, if you set it wrong, the date will change at midday instead of midnight. Also, not having used the watch for years, the date has no month indication, so I'm assuming you have to correct the date in months with less than 31 days, as with an analogue day date watch?
Why do the seconds flash?
My module says Malaysia and NSC. I now know what it stands for!
There are many different modules for Trafalgar and despite many being the one you have some display differently, I guess it’s upgrades to the module perhaps.
I can’t remember what I said in this video as it was years ago. On my review channel (My Watch Reviews) I recently reviewed the new Hamilton LED watch that is a nod to the original Pulsar of 1973 I think . In that video I show my LEDs next to the newcomer.

Sorry Mike there is a men's P4 the executive (bar display) also came in a military version with 24 hour time display. Buy a P3 as it is the most beautiful led ever made. Andy
I just picked up the armitron led I think it’s called the griffy
My mum bought me the first Timex LED when it came out, cost her a fortune and it was pretty poor, ate batteries like nothing else, about as sturdy as a politicians promise and Timex in the end just offered me mum a voucher rather than fix it again which was turned into an analogue one... which was equally poor tbh, glass fell out, the winder crown just snapped when winding, the strap lugs were weak and my mum demanded her money back and to be fair she did get it and that was the last childhood Timex I had. I have a couple LED watches now, one is branded a Storm, a super heavy, chunky black and silver thick bracelet and it emits the time in dots, like quarter past 1 would be 1 dot on the left and 15 dots on the right, it tells the date and seconds in the same way and a very strange watch. I also have a non working Elektronica Soviet era watch with a munched out circuit board due to leaky battery, got my little spies over ol' Russia way looking me out for anything that I can replace the board with as its toasted pretty bad :(

There's a blue lit Pulsar "spoon" on ebay at the mo, seems some of these watches though are being reproduced. I must admit I did buy a Skmei rose gold "retro" LCD recently as I have no working LCD watches working as my Seiko works but the display is almost unreadable and I replaced the polariser but it is super faint :(
The Spoon Pulsars are a back lit LCD, quite modern too, not sure what decade. I prefer all the early stuff from 70s and early 80s.
Hey i have a 80s Compuchron, and i have no idea how to set the date.
Theres one button on the left to show the date and one button on the right to show the time. Under the Button for time there are two buttons to set the hour and minute.
Has anyone any idea how to do that?

Why is the crystal red?
I regret not keeping my off-brand black plastic LED watch and my then favorite Armitron LED watch. They were battery pits, so when efficient LCD watches hit the market, I tossed out the old LEDs.
Sounds like a very common scenario. I’ve bought quite a few led “just needs a battery “ Ebay listings only to find the insides are rotten from a 40 year old battery.
Far too many were just thrown into a draw and forgotten about for decades .
I have a bulova driver Computron,sadly I dropped it albeit onto the carpet but a couple of segments no longer worked.A cursery glance inside sees the legs of the led module rest on pads but my eyesight and shaky hands means it now resides in a drawer there no way I could test to see if bending the to make them touch more firmly fixes it. My son or whoever gets it when I croak can try. I have had it since the 80's so will never sell it
david granger almost an impossible task if you ask me. My success rate on fixing LEDs is very low. Of those Micro wires break then there is little chance unless you are good with micro electronics .
Just be sure to store without any batteries.
Always scan Ebay as they do come up often and working . If it’s affordable to you then buy one and swap the module out which will be an easy task

I see u have only red lit ones, is this ur preferemce, or were all these early watches only in red?

Hi, I'm trying to find my childhood watch that was stolen in highschool and i came to this video. I want to try and find the watch again. It has the same mechanism as the pulsar watch and looks similar. it's a on a black rubber strap and case with mirrored dial. The time only shows when you press a button like what you have there. Only thing different is a breif animtion of a frame around the time. If my memory serves me right, the digits/frame animation is a rainbow colour. It's been 20+ years ago.
I was wondering if you know what i'm talking about and know the model name. i've been spending hours looking through seiko catelogs, and i'm not even sure if it's a seiko. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

1:33 - no, it's not. Computron is a ~1976 drivers LED watch by Bulova. This would be a Compu Chron. ;)
It was a slip of the tongue as I know it’s not the Bulova one. My next sentence states it’s Japanese.
Are you sure the Pulsar P4 is a ladies watch? The men’s P4 was made smaller than the P3
This video was so long ago I don’t know what I said. I bought a p4 once thinking it was a man’s at it turned out to be a ladies but I would not have meant the P4 was ladies just I got a ladies version

i just got my old led watch out from a cupboard , cleaned up the battery terminals and it works but i need a new strap for it ,have you heard of a "SHRIKE PRESIDENT" ??

I still have my CBM led given to me in 1976 when I was a boy. The logo still has all its paint but mine came with a black faux leather crocodile. strap. It must have some water resistance as I once jumped into a swimming pool still wearing it by mistake while on a family holiday in 1978 and it still worked.
Can these be made to stay lit continuously? I want to take the guts from one and install in a pocket radio that’s powered by two AA batteries.
Jerome Bullard really not sure. The reason they don’t stay on is due to the fact they eat batteries.

Thought to give this a rewatch as I nailed an original Pulsar-Elektronika very early LED watch and wanted to ground myself on what to expect lol Just uploaded a vid about my sudden case of Accuristisms hehe, one moment all I got is a Skymaster and suddenly breaks out in fresh weird and funky Accurists O.o Also seem to possess the worlds largest Lorus chronograph now so another notch in the Seiko brands bedpost lol

On LED watches? They are so difficult to fix and it all depends on the damage inside. They were not designed to last some 40-50 years and the technology was very basic. If a stripdown and clean with alcohol does not work then it could well be that its dead completely.
I have more no runners than I do running.
Are these watches millennium proof?

MrWitin most I have tried I have been unsuccessful. They are before solid state chip tech so the wire bonds are very fragile and tend to get eaten by leaked acid . I am not cleaver enough to fix those.
Always try to carefully wash the board with ipa alcohol . Sometimes this is enough to kick start them back to life

Does anyone have any experience working on LED watches? I've managed to break not one but two in the process of changing their batteries, and I'm wondering if this is a common problem, if it's reversible, and how I can stop being like this in the future. Specifically, a computron and a bulova.

It's Compu CHRON, not Tron. Hughes modules never used in any Pulsar. I'm done after 3 minutes.

@9:41 I had the National Semiconductor black "Exelar" watch when I was 11 years old (back in 1976), which looks a little like this one except all plastic. I remember that the batteries didn't last very long in it, and so did the display which failed one segment at a time just outside the warranty period (90 days if I remember).

Thats a cool looking led. same it failed so quickly. They wer not made to last in reality.
