Welcome back to my first video of my THIRD freaken attempt to reach Greenland!
Hop onboard and join me on the first leg sailing from Norway to Shetland across 200 NM of North Sea. Watch how I managed to rip my brand new Rolly Tasker gennaker to pieces in seconds, beeing very unfortunate in my attempt to deploy it. Things very often dont go as planned, as this expedition in full will show you. There is only one rule when that happens. Keep looking forward! :)

Great comment lol! Don't know if I'd be keen to go up on deck without a harness, but I don't think Erik is foolhardy. He's tested himself and his very well-appointed boat to the max (previous vids). He actually seems pretty safety conscious, and knows his shit. Wind vanes and autohelms are brilliant, you can get out of the wind to light your smoke!

@@alexpapa2968 I was him and I Am Portuguese so sailing and the sea is in my DNA... until...my, not one but both (upper and lower starboard side) lifelines failed while leaning on it and i hit the water fully dressed while the boat continued on autopilot and yes i was alone.
      Btw this happen at night.
I certainly respect "freedom of choice" but... with all my wisdom I can certainly say: No matter how prepared, qualified or at ease you are at sea because in a split second everything can and will go really bad and the price to pay can be forever unaffordable.

Great video again. Regarding the genakker, always keep the jib up and hoist it behind the jib. Host the halyard from the back of the boat so you can immediately pull on the sheet to get the sail under control. Drop the jib as soon as the genakker is under control.

It is heartening to see you show the sail ripping. Through the camera it can be hard to see the intensity of the weather. It's a good lesson in how powerful those spider-silk thin sails can be, when even the smallest thing goes wrong with them.
It is also a rare gem that talks about positive mental attitude and can actually use it and find it when something that frustrating happens.

Hey Eric! Love your adventures. Just a note on the Ulcerative Colitis. I suffered for 25 years and I talked to Mike McCready, the guitar player for Pearl Jam who runs a Chron"s Colitis foundation here in Seatlle, where we both agreed that we had the same experience with ending UC. The secret? We quit drinking alcohol. I believe it kills the bacteria in the human gut. After I quit I had only a few bouts with UC and then it diminished to occasional battles with IBS which are easily controlled with proper diet. Now I have no more problems than any other person.
I know it's a giant step. I know there's no science to support it and the story is completely anecdota,l but I believe it's what made the difference. What really clues me in to you is that you, Mike, and I are all the exact same body type. Lean and physical guys who are really mentally aware. Anyway, Good Luck with it. I hope you get better.

If I were a younger man I would love to attempt what you do my friend. I look so forward to the next episode. Don't forget, after Greenland you have to make it to Newfoundland to be a true viking. To improve gut health, you could try cutting out all processed food from your diet. No Spam and Diet Coke. Cook up batches of food for the crossings and freeze then. Pasta sause, stews, etc. Take the evening meal out of the freezer when you get up in the morning and let it defrost through the day. Then heat it up at night and quickly boil up pasta or rice to go with it.

Best sailing channel on youtube. My sailing adventures are on a local lake in a 17' DS1 O'Day sailboat, and the other day had a jib wrap around itself around the forestay as we were tacking in a stiff breeze (15 knots). Wound up in irons, and my crewmate had to climb up on top of the cuddy to free up the jib which was flapping furiously. No harm done, but it was what I call "a moment of truth."

I have come to your channel via Patrick Laine's sailing channel, and I love it! I thought I'd start with the latest video to see what you're up to now then I'm going back to the beginning to watch each and every of your adventures in order. But this one really hit home with me! I also have ulcerative colitis so I can assure you I know exactly what you go through when it knocks you flat like that. But what really hit me was the issue with your jaw, the locked jaw, the infected muscle spasm and the realignment/misalignment of your teeth. I'm going through the EXACT same thing right now! I even have the same biteplate from my dentist to sleep with. The painkillers and muscle relaxants aren't helping me, what I really feel I need is to get away, let the wind blast the cobwebs out of my head and let nature heal my soul again. I'm glad you're able to it. By the way, I have not had covid that I'm aware of, but I did have one vaccine injection, it put me straight in hospital, UC flared up like hell and I've had nothing but trouble since, including the jaw problem now. I wonder if it's all related to that stupid virus. Anyway, happy sailing. I'm looking so forward to coming along (virtually) on your adventures. ⛵ Much love from South Africa 🇿🇦

It's so great to see The Tough Viking back, relaxing in your natural element and giving us the best no bullshit solo sailing videos on RUclips. But I have one big concern for your safety. You really should use a safety harness and clip onto jack lines, especially since your free hand can't hold a camera and the boat at the same time and accidents happen to us all. BTW I'm an old Contessa owner who used to have a Hydrovane both were excellent.

If you hoist it before you take down the headsail it will be hoisted in the wind-shadow of the headsail and you won't have such problems as you did. So hoist gennaker first, then take down headsail. The same applies when taking it down. Do it in the wind-shadow of the headsail. Hoist headsail first then take down gennaker.

I'd no idea you suffered from Ulcerative Colitis, my admiration grows even bigger for you! I have had Ulcerative Colitis for 29 years now, half my life, and I know how debilitating it can be!

Next year you will beat Greenland! Can’t wait for more videos. All my life I have been exploring croatian coast with small motor boats, last ten years with panicking wife and two cool kids who I managed to get infected with sea life but you inspire me to try to sail. I will keep trying to get a sailboat and start learning. I know how it is when shit hits the fan and nature is so above you that you fear for your life at some point, and you are a true inspiration, balls so big you have to wear hoodie upside down. RESPECT!

Seriously sailing all the time NBJS .Thank you again. Many other videos on RUclips are lots of talk and no sailing. The best sailing video. Sailing brothers are fun too . I like them too but as per sailing this is the best. Good luck and fair see tiger.

Dude, keep doing what you do- living your best life. I had a great friend die of lung cancer due to smoking just two years ago, he was only 52 years old. Ditch the darts my brother- it's all I ask of you...

Absolutely love it - keep on sailing and inspiring everyone who loves sailing. There's nothing that can make you feel as free, healthy, alive but also little, meaningless and vulnerable as sailing does. You're right, sailing is all about feeling safe - stay healthy and enjoy the good things in this not-so-good world!
Und immer eine Hand breit Wasser unterm Kiel❤
