Just to let you know: you are not the only single handed sailor that sometimes hits a boy or runs aground. As long as the damage to your ego is bigger than the damage to your 35 ft or mine, we will keep sailing single handed and enjoy the seas!
I hit a large unlit bouy off Portugal at night. It was marking a fish farm. Scared the hell out of me since I had no idea what it was 'til I got some light on it.
we almost hit a buoy twice. both times we (two sailors) were both wide awake... just not paying proper attention. pure luck not smashing them. and we ran aground like 5 times :D so yeah... dont you worrie
Haha, I ran aground in Lake Bala only 3 weeks ago. Did a full 180! Only been sailing there for about 2 years so what do I know!!! Teach me to try and look at the weather while steering my Lugger!!!
@@cowboy6591 Great point. Similar to Mads and Athena. I wonder whether Erik and Mads realize what a profound effect their honesty brings to those who tend to be discouraged by setbacks. That attitude can be applied well beyond boat resto/prep and sailing adventures.
I love watching your videos Erik, you have no idea just how uplifting they are & the time, trouble & effort you put into them is what helps to make them as special as they are. Well done on another fantastic story.
Thank you Erik. As someone who spends a lot of time on the water, I cant help but get scared from time to time in challenging conditions. Your calmness and determination when working through rough seas is an inspiration
I love that you‘re not showing off. Mistakes happen and there‘s no need to hide them. You‘re a true adventurer and I enjoy to join you through your fantastic videos. Greetings
Every time I watch these videos I'm amazed that one dude with a drone and a few go pros can make content of similar or better production value than most cable tv shows
I am not a yachtsman but your boat is kept so clean and tidy unlike some other (nameless) RUclips sailors I watch. I love your videos. Stay safe and we’ll.
Erik: When we sailed downwind on our circumnavigation, we used two headsails as you did, but we poled them out. With that arrangement we could easily sail with the wind 135 degrees abaft the bow on either tack without jibing. We hoisted the mainsail with three reefs and pointed the leech into the wind and held it there with a preventer. This dampened the rolling.
Damn, Skipper, I can feel the salt spray down my neck.... Great movie, we were right there with you and are very appreciative of all those who helped you on the way. I'm sure you can get on top of some of those health niggles - for what it's worth I was plagued with digestive issues for a few years which cleared up after we started making our own sauerkraut...who knew???? Greatly looking forward to the next episode, Godbless and thanks again.
Thanks for the video. I watch your videos in my boring nights and try to feel the ocean. I svear sometimes I can smell the sea and and feel the cold wind. Thanks from Istanbul.
You are inspirational Erik! Resilient, humble and courageous. Don't worry for hitting the buoy, I think I'm just lucky it never happened to me but I can remember 2 times when I came less than 50cm from them !! I hope your arm will get better very soon.
Thanks Erik, i appreciate all your videos and the effort you take to make them for us to enjoy.. i wish i was as brave and adventurous as you! Mike ( from Scotland)
Thank you for the trips. Lost you for a time. Greetings from Indianapolis, Indiana USA. You bring allot of joy to this 86 year old man. I will be brewing a 5 gallon batch of beer today.
Thanks for sharing, especially the faults, thats make you authenic. And also as a single handed sailor, I had to admit I also rammed a bouy. Stay that authenic
Erik, sorry to hear about the shoulder injury. Those things take time to heal and sometimes, surgery. I hope this didn't come between you and Greenland. BTW, good sailing technique on that downwind run with the staysail on one side and the headsail on the other side. We call that 'wing on wing'. Would recommend a 'whisker pole' so you can pole out either the head or stay sails so they don't flog and flap back and forth in the wind. Saves some wear and tear on the sails and keeps them fully out so they don't have to refill with wind to push the boat. The foggy entrance to Skalavik reminded me of a few races I've done here in Juneau, Alaska (we get a LOT of fog), where we pulled into the fjord in the dark of night using only the radar, and then got close enough to the harbor to finally see the lights but had to use strong flashlights to help get past the breakwater! Glad your friends came through for you. I do enjoy the part of your videos where you show the attractions and history of the islands you visit, and some of the history of those areas, especially via drone. Good content. Lastly, I ordered my NBJS merch and it should be here shortly! Ser deg senere! Wade
This might sound weird but I swear the pronunciation of all the places and names awakens some kind of ancient hereditary memories for me like it's the most normal sounds in the world. I would like to visit this part of the world.
Don't feel bad about running into a sea buoy. During my circumnavigation, I did that TWICE! The first time i got grabbed by an unexpected side current. The second time i was just not observant enough... the buoy was behind the mast. Oh dear. 😬
One of my favorite episodes so far! Beautiful cinematography, great narration, and awesome adventures! Good luck on your next leg to Iceland! I look forward to every video you release and get excited when I see a new one!
Only those who crawl ... do not stumble, making mistakes is human, in fact it seems that the erasers behind the pencils have been put for that reason ... Tessie is a beautiful Viking's boat it is normal that she has some scars pass me the term "War". Fair wind Erik your videos are magnificent !!! Thanks for letting us sail with you. Good recovery and greetings from Italy
Great video! 👍 Those buoys can really come out from nowhere 🤣 I wonder if the name Lerwick has any similarities to the town Larvik in Norway..🤔 and cheers to Skålevik😁
You know Erik, the last 3 years I have been having to be relentless myself, refitting my own boat, a Spencer 42, to get out and do some open ocean sailing, and have some adventures, watching your videos when they came out along the way has always been great motivation to keep going, the scenery in them is always so beautiful. This spring I will be setting off North to Alaska, that is going to be quite an adventure!
22:44 - Ouch. Can relate. Torn tendons in my left shoulder a year ago and in my right shoulder this year. And that was mountainbiking.. Can't wait to start sailing and tear some more.. ':D
Just binged some of your videos, absolute world class content! Nothing but respect for your courage to go out on the waters alone. Cheers from the Netherlands 🍻🍻

I feel so much better now. Last year we were sailing the west coast of New Zealand. I narrowly missed some sort of unmanned barge. I had been watching a red light for some time thinking it was on the coast. My eye sight isn't so good any more. There's almost never any other traffic on that side of the Island so we don't have the radar on. I was fluffing around trying to get it going when we went past it within 50m of the starboard side. Scary!!
45 years ago, I remember flying at night in a 4 seater Plane with an inexperienced Pilot into a unfamiliar Airport and he asked me to keep my eyes open for other Aircraft. It was interestingly scary how your eyes try to make sense out of red lights that you are unfamiliar with.
Wow, Erik! The opening shots of Lerwick harbor are amazing, as are all your drone shots in this video. Wow!! So, it’s not like you to hit buoys, even though accidents do happen. I’m sure Tessie won’t take it personally. There aren’t many 40+ year old ladies with perfectly smooth surfaces in existence anyway. 😉 Don’t beat yourself up over it. You were, maybe, just not quite yourself. I was going to say, “At least you are home now resting,” but the shoulder. 😮 What on earth happened? Never a dull moment in your life. That’s for sure. ❤ Loved the video but I hate to see you struggling with health issues of any kind. It will take some time for that shoulder to heal, ouch!! I hope your mom makes you a few more salads and some nutritious food. Please take care of yourself and get better soon. Looking forward to the next video in this series. It’s always good to hear from you. 😢❤🥰
Did an east coast trip this spring for a couple weeks, felt better prepared than the owner by the end, now I’m looking for a boat - hope some day to make it over to visit
Thank you very much Erik. Your video's are really helping me go through a "less happy" period in my life. The tenner is a little contribution for buying (and wearing) a life vest with harnass and EPIRB.🙂 Hope you stay safe. Joost
Erik, great to see you reached Faroe again and curious to learn how you proceeded. Around Mykeness again (surely this time you are warned about the tidal race!) or via Klaksvik and between the islands in the north? I'll be on the lookout for your next episode... And yes, buoys and sandbanks have an amazing ability to attract yachts! Most of us occasionally suffer.
Lots of canned food eating it all day and nights, eating unregularelly = ulcer problems. I had the same problem wich bothered me for years. Then, one day,my condition became even more worse and i needed to go to operation. Nowadays im well and i threw away canned food from my life. When im going outside,in nature or hiking for days and weeks i bring already cooked and prepared food with fruits and just eat that. Never ever had problem with ulcer.
Really enjoy your videos of places I doubt I will ever get to. I have crossed the Atlantic though so I know the beauty of the Sea. I'd love to know a bit more about your beautiful Contessa? Did you restore her? It's a magnificent job. Any vids of the restoration? Cheers
I had a shoulder injury like that one time. (Motorcycle accident.) I had to wear a sling for several weeks. Pro tip: Quit smoking. Nicotine constricts your blood vessels. Quitting smoking will allow you to recover more quickly because proteins will make it through the capillaries that deposit nutrients into the damaged areas of your tendons. (I learned that one recovering from tendinitis caused by practicing guitar too much.) Best of luck.

Deliberately vulnerable. Choosing to relinquish certainty. That’s adventure.

What separates Erik from allot of others is "He will Admit and Explain" his goof-ups, everybody has a shot at screw-ups.

Great video, thanks for sharing. Good that you sow the bad bits as well, and it was good that you could thank an old friend.
Erik, of all the fine solo sailors on RUclips, you have the most soul. Be well, friend.
Sono luoghi bellissimi, grazie per averli mostrati al mondo intero tramite il tuo canale. Saluti dalla Sardegna!!
Keep fighting forward..
Inspiring mate!!!
Well done Erik. Another fab vid & for leaving ‘the bump’ in there; honest & brave and all the more real.
Take care of the shoulder.
I have nothing in common with sailing wide open sea and ocean but...i really enjoy watching your trip 🙂👍 greatings from Poland brave man.

I appreciate your amazing journey. You take wonderful video and tell a great story. Can't wait to see the rest of your journey!

Hi Erik, I really enjoy your videos and learning about these islands. - from Sawyer, 8 years old.
Come on Erik!!!! You can do it!!!!
Great video sir; Matches the name of your channel, no drama, potty mouth or drunken partying; Just Sailing. NICE!!

Excellent presentation good luck with part 3
That cardinal buoy has an acoustic monitoring hydrophone attached to it so it recorded the bang‼️
Haha, would love to hear that😇
Get healthy Erik the Viking!! We need more NBJS!!
Thanks for the great adventure that you make me live thrue your sailing trips
great Editing work again 💯
I have Crohn’s disease, so good to hear of your real experience of UC but overcoming it to do this. Very inspirational, thank you
Nice work on the colors amigo!
Seeing the fog covering the cliff of the Faroe Islands was amazing. I can only imagine what it must be like to see them in real life.
The Faroes are wonderful!!!

Top video Erik. Getting it done before you fall apart. We are all mortal, but you show us what a person can do with determination.
The best sailing channel ❤️ No Bulshit just Sailing
Nice road trip too!
Always so exciting to see the boat sailing Erik 😊
Stay healthy Eric!!

A very inspiring challenge you are undertaking. Beautiful cinematography and great narration.
Nice video Erik. Love how well you captured the boat sounds in this one. You can eat some beef tendons for your shoulder to heal faster.
