Tessie got a new eye! Testing the Raymarine FLIR M300C lowlight and zoom camera.

- Check out the Tessie's new enhanced vision as Raymarine let me test their FLIR M300C low light and 30 x zoom camera. This is a big lift for my singlehanded navigation. The camera sits 4 meter up the mast on its Scanstrut support bracket, and is connected to my 3 x Axiom chartplotters. The camera is gyro stabilised, meaning keep the camera lens still while the boat is moving around in the waves.
It is able to keep a clear vision, even in very low light conditions. A 30 x zoom lets me see obsticles, ships and other objects far away to chart the surroundings while navigating.
This will be a very cntral part when closing into the ice of Greenland in a few weeks. I also hope to detect polarbears and whales as I enter the icy, cold coast.
Getting prepared for departure in just a few days now!

Erik, your boat is becoming a hi tech spaceship ! thanks for sharing your innovations ! May Eole and Neptune always watch on you !
You're still amazing! You're a Viking that moves with the time and I'm sure that the old Vikings are delighted with you and your trips!!! I wish you health, luck and never ending courage for your new episode!
Thank you! Yes Vikings were always on a lookout for metodes to enhance their navigation
Cool setup... seven grand just for the camera. It's gonna add bonus content to your ALREADY amazing episodes. It's just you and Sam for my favorite single-handers. Thanks
Father Christmas arrive very early this year. Congrats with the new FLIR camera.!!👍💪
Cameras a great addition and will be one more thing to keep you entertained during downtime or viewing beautiful landscapes.
You are most impressive!! 😮🤗👍❤. This is going to be an epic voyage, for sure, with amazing footage. You must be getting a little anxious now. I hope you get some good sleep and build up your strength before you go! Take care.😎🤩😊
That's a great addition to the boat.
Love this channel. Amazing camera, beautiful Tessie.
Hi Erik. Thanks for another cool video.
Greenland🇬🇱. ..I do hope you make it this time. - YOU do deserve it.
N.B.J.S. 💪👊🇳🇴
I can see Iceland already…very excited and can’t wait. Stay safe.
That's quite cool thing! I wonder what's available in few years when the moment comes to get equipment for SeaCamel... 😛
Looks like you're getting lots of good toys to help keep a lookout! The shallow water warning should help avoid running Tassie aground again i hope!
That one will wake you up for sure!
Such a beautiful boat.
Erik, I’m so happy for you to have the latest safety equipment, if anybody can benefit from it, it would be you. 👍👍
I proudly wear your hat everyday. ❤
_"if anybody can benefit from it, it would be you"_
That sounds mildly insulting 😂
Yes and then go on deck with 35 knots wind ……with no personal safety gear at all…….😮
Awesome dude!! That’s a lovey bit of kit. Really looking forward to the Greenland trip, and hopefully this makes it a little bit easier for you.
Excellent piece of kit 👍
New Brunswick Canada 🇨🇦
Love the Raymarine FLIR M300C install Eric. She will make a big difference as you navigate single handedly.
Nice kit 👍🏴
Great installation! Amazing camera.
I am new to sailing and I bought my first sailboat last year, a small 25ft, 50 years old boat that I have since working to restore. Doing most of the work on my boat alone as well, I just wanted to say that I really appreciate the effort and extra planning involved when working by yourself! Congratulations on the new equipment
Cool system. Help you see obstructions in the water and any problems with the boat inside the cabin. Cheers🍻⛵
Wow, what a piece of tech. Good luck. Will follow.
Man that's a top FLIR camera , You are a very lucky man Erik .
tight sails my friend
Robert (contessa 32 ) NSW Australia
Maybe many boats will be doing watches from below deck! if you put this on top of the mast you can have full visibility without being blocked buy the headsail, keep up the good work!
1:46 Cool. Tessie is the only sailboat I know of that could have it's own IT Department!! 🤣
😂😂
😂😂poor Eric, all this teasing in the comments. Fortunately, this Viking has a sense of humour! 😂😂😂😂
Really sweet camera. Very nice.
Congratulations Erik!!!
Very cool, I live just a few miles away from FLIR headquarters and research and development
Great vids, teck sharing much appreciated never a dull moment. Please wear a harness when not in the cockpit.Don't use up you'r luck.will help keep you'r valuable channel going.
Very nice! I like that shirt design, I already have a polo.
Nice piece of safety equipment.
An excellent piece of work, Erik. If this makes your journey safer as a solo sailor, it's worth every penny. Given the huge pressures that are already exerted on a mast, the mounting of this camera will be inconsequential.
Thats pretty sweet, but wont the sails be in the way a lot of the time?
Camera is slightly installed towards starboard of center making it possible to at least see straight forward when sails are on port side. And one can always change the course to one side to get view for a minute😇
If you put it on the masthead you could have a 360 degree view. I guess that’s a trade off with the extra mass aloft. Or you could get two cameras, one on each side of the mast :-)
Erik, stort tack för att du delar med dig av dina äventyr! :)
Love your channel Erik. Looking forward to the Greenland adventure MK4 (or is it MK5;) Many years ago I used to live in Haugesund and still have many friends there. Love seeing Risoy Broen in the background. Many winter days walking across that bridge in the rain and wind ⛈️ to go to work! trygge reiser
Thank you! I think its MK4 now, losing track😅
Brilliant picture
That zoom was incredible! It was more stable than I could be with binoculars. I hope it records footage. What a great addition to your solo adventures!
It can record to a usb port/ memorycard. Will be a great addition in many ways!
@@erikaanderaa You can also get the Raymarine network storage which stores video and information.
Good luck, Erik. You'll do it this time.
Hi what is the length and beam and depth of your boat, great watching you keep safe Alan
This is the most awesome channel on RUclips
Alluring Arctic Sailing are a very very close second. They also are about to sail to Greenland using the Northwest Passage.
Norway vs Finland
You’re going to make it this time 🎉 I can feel it!!
Erik, thank you for the introduction to our first-ever patented Smart Collision Prevention System. We look forward to you testing it out at sea and wish you a safe voyage!
Thank you! This will be awesome😎😎
Thank you for a god instruction/video.
I wonder how it is for collision awoidence compared to the Oscar? Have they transferred the AI and software from Oscar system into this new Flir camera?
Can you roughly estimate the detection distance for a floating container, a 40 feet sailboat and a 100m cargo ship?
I am amazed that drilling into a mast is preferable to a clamp based mounting system. Not being a mech eng that is.
nails are rivets and rivet set gun. always have spare drills for breakages up the mast .love your work sailor.
Wow awesome improvements!
Great idea and well done!
That zoom is immense!
Your app looks awesome! I'm looking forward to following your next trip, Erik. Thanks for creating such amazing content to share with us.
WOW! a lot of electronics, you should have an enhance peace of mind and sleep. The best of luck for your journey to Greenland and a very successful one. Have a safe and fun adventure!
This mast looks more and more like a Christmas tree. 😁I hope people will start to merge more and more of these sensors into small and effective modules. But if it ads extra protection for single handler- it is worth the clutter I guess.
Good video. Of course I want one... but it's more a wow then must have. The one time I absolutely needed a mast camera is when I first flew my asymmetric spinnaker. I could not see what was in front of me. So no spinnaker just sailing around near the marina in a lot of traffic.
But then I'd need a camera above the spinnaker -- which would be at or near the top of the mast. And it would also have to be above the foresails as well. ...
One thing a mast camera has proven really useful for my friends: docking and picking up mooring buoys. And FLIR is good in any light level.
How was the camera performing at the top of the mast? Is it able to handle motions well? Did you use a self leveling platform?
Nice kit.
Fantastic!👏🏼👏🏼
I'm looking for something like this to attach to the pulpit. I usually sail in very busy waters and with a camera on the pulpit I'd be able to see vessels approaching in my blind spot on the lee.
Just installed the app!!!! Very cool!
Hello Eryk* I see that you are not only a sea wolf, but also... a mountaineer :) You told the story nicely and showed the modernization. With your narration and film talent, even such technical editing becomes interesting* Regards
£7000??? Bloody hell. I would want it to show me videos all night as well and do my washing up haha Can't wait to see it in action.
Yeah and wake me a with a bj
I suspect it will be of limited usefulness when under sail.
@@johnwhite626Don't know. This equipment is very rare to see in such small yatchs (due to costs, mostly, obvious), but virtually every "big" yatch has one. It is certain that Erik will end having more electronics onboard 34 feet Tessie than on a US Navy destroyer...
@@alamos8 lol - and a maintenance schedule to keep him busy sorting out electrical issues..
And the amount of power required by all his “Raymarine gear” must be A Lot!!! But, free is free!😂
Cool toy!
Now you're looking for polar bears! Ha love it!!
👀👀😎
A good kit for new adventures to come. How about the one the top, the collision avoidance?
It is getting an upgrade/ new control unit tomorrow!
Very nice safety addition: 2 questions:
1. Will those 12 drill holes weaken the mast?
2. What is your mast climbing gear?
Thanks,
Jules
It wont for sure not make it stronger, but reviting the holes they get somewhat restrenghtened
🙂stay safe⛵
Lovely setup how much power does this consume? SV Skoiern lV 🎉
Erik, pls be careful. Your illness is stealing your vitality. You must be aware that you cannot push as hard as you once did. If you do push yourself, I fear you may end up harmed. The Force 10 vid is what brought me to your channel -- agreed. But you are interesting for many reasons. You do not need to put yourself in danger to maintain your viewership. We are already sold on your vids.
Erik, do you have a clear view forward when the headsail is set to starboard? Cool gear; But it also costs €6,759.00 without the cable and switch. Plus another €480 for the Scanstrut Mast Mount.
That FLIR is HUGE!! My gosh!
Veldig bra, Raymarine!
great camera
marine electronics Are Awesome !!!
@erikaanderaa cool tech, for sure! Unrelated, im curious if you have to drive far to get to your marina to work on your boat?
Only a 10 min trip☺️
@@erikaanderaa Lucky! I recently moved my boat from a 45min away marina that was at the end of a deep fjord, to one that has better access to open waters but is 90min away. Cheers 🍻
What a superb device ... ok so it's not cheap, but then again, what navionics products for sailing are cheap? None :) And if it can automatically "stand watch" for you while you rest, then it has to be worth it ... will make a lot of difference to solo or twin sailors everywhere ... twins because you end up standing watch while your partner rests, which can mean you never see each other, other than for 5 mins at watch handovers. I've also downloaded the app - nice one! Will be fun tracking you on the upcoming Greenland trip :) Happy sailing Erik, and a safe time of things too.
I love the camera. You will have huge fun. Can you record videomwith this new camera?
Yes indeed! With also be a big lift for videoproduction😀
Thats a cool piece of kit. Not something I'll ever have, but still cool.
That's a really cool boat. Really nice technology on it. Ever thought about doing a circumnavigation?
Every day😇
Great stuff, wouldnt it smart to seal the wooden ( balsa core) sandwich of the deck-holes with epoxy ? Holes tend to leak sooner or later and rotten sandwich core is usually the ( economically) end of a boat
Love your content. Why did you mount it offset from centerline?
Thanks! To be able to have vision aftwards. Port aft beam I can live without. And also to get the camera slightly away from the staysail👍
Weird is good!
Careful you
don't
Sink Tessie with all that tech and big boys toys Erik.
Can't wait to see it all in action.
Stay Safe
Be well mate
thirty years ago I spent a lot on Raymarine bits, the alternator regulator went silly and all those bits were dead.
Raymarine failed to allow for overvoltage with a 2 cents regulator protection, which I think was a criminal ommision.
I hope for you their new stuff is protected to an industry standard.
Even Clipper are, and they are cheap.
Best of luck with this years Greenland trip.
Woa! I want one! Please can I have one Uncle Erik?
If you are a good boy for Christmas it might turn up😎
Hi Erik, looks great. Was there no way to feed the wires inside the mast?
Amazing! I wonder, Eric, is it ever possible to ascend the mast out at sea (to fix a problem) if necessary as you did when installing the camera? Or would it be simply too dangerous?
Its possible as long as the boat is somewhat steady.
@@erikaanderaa good to know, thank you for reply!
YESssssssss!!!!! 👏👏🍺
Woooow very nice
Hi Erik, I am working in Haugsund for a couple of weeks are you in port?
Linking and visual tracking AIS targets is pretty spiffy. I thought it would be handy to track a MOB - but that is less than useful for a single handed.😉
very kewl Eric
I would not put the safety wire in to place, if that unit start banging te mast in high seas you will not be able to get it down and it will damage the mast for sure with the steel bottum plate. Might cause the mast to fall down.
is there a small blind-spot port-starboard?
Cool beans👍🍸
i would put the camera on the bow somewhere. the way you have it setup, the sails will block most of its view. On the bow you can get full view in front of boat all the time.
Good point. However the I fear the poor cam would be constantly drenched in heavy seaspray shorting its lifespan..🌊👀
@@erikaanderaa Ah good point. Too bad they were not a little smaller for mast top install.
Hi. I am a sailor from Poland. What does the image from the FILR camera look like during a storm? Rain may distort the image. Have you checked? Did this camera pass the test?
Very cool camera, Erik - can you record from the video feed?
Yes! Thats also a big deal with the instalment😀
Just downloaded the app!
Great, thanks🙏
what about foresail will obstruct part of the view forward while sailing 🤔
It will ofcourse, but one can change the course for a little while to have forward view😇 Can is mounted on starboard side to have view forward when sail is on port side👌
Tessie…the fully integrated Aegis Frigate edition 😎🤓 🤖
Won't the screw holes for the FLIR create a week point in the mast Eric ?
Not much when revited I believe. Masts are pushed downwards, compressing the mast.
@@erikaanderaa The rate you're going all your new toys will be worth more then the boat lol.
How do you clean the dried salt spray from the camera all the way up there? It will get crusty with salt in a matter of hours 😅
Flush it with a hose in port👌👌
