I use two trashcans and #tinktube pipe and brackets to make a simple (???) Black Solider Fly Larvae #BSFL #composting bin. I installed the bin in my neighbor's chicken coop and negotiated with the #chickens to get them to eat the larvae. It took a few minutes and several modifications to convince them the bugs were really chicken candy.
Tinktube Parts List:
(1) 92" pipe - PT-92-BK
(3) T-Connectors - HJ-1
(1) 3-Way Cross Connector - HJ-4
(7) Plastic End Cap - AP-ICAP
(1) Rubber Foot - AF-RUB
(2) Pipe Clamps, Single Mount - AO-EMT1
(1 Box) Self Tapping screws - FA-A85/8
If you plan to buy conduit locally, omit the pipe and purchase:
(8) 3/4 Inch EMT Adaptors - EMT-ADPTR34
If you select "3/4 EMT" when selecting the fittings, the adaptors are automatically added to your order. Also note the end caps and foot won't fit the conduit.
Other parts needed:
- Trashcans
- Metal drip edge or flashing
- Scrap plastic
- Inner tube or strap
- S-hook
I used two 5 gallon buckets for my compost bin. I used the larva to give to my bearded dragon when he was a baby. I supplemented his cricket and roach diet with the BSL What I didn't give him I put in the bucket with wood pellets and kitchen scraps like watermelon rinds and carrot peelings, I didn't and still don't have chickens; but, if I lived in a place where I could, I definitely would.
I live in Washington and the soldier flies might survive the summer, even though it is not very humid; but, I think our winters would kill them off.
Chicken psychology! I'm always amazed at what you can put together with the various connectors that TinkTube offers. Great design Tom!
Thanks, brother.
Chickens are so funny. I often find myself talking to them and explaining things to them lol. Great video and I really like the simple design.
Thank you for the feedback, Ema. Thanks for watching!
Welcome back Tom. Good seeing your design and fabrication process on this channel. This is a great recycling project if you have chickens.
New motto for this year, Safety first and science second. Peace brother
It was a kitty litter box ... if it was EVER peed in by a cat it is amazing the birds ever even got close to it
Chickens are like cats - it's quicker and easier to leave them alone and let them figure it out.
Lol! Yes I should have just let them be. :-) Thank you for watching.
I used a similar method but with a 5 gallon bucket. I wanna make a bunch of them. Cause they just eat thru everythjng every well
They are truly amazing composters! Thank you for watching.
I had no idea what BSFL meant until 2 mns into the vid. hahahaha.
:-)
Nice design! But how do the fly get in to lay eggs?
It was an issue. I made a modification later to address it. There another short video about the modification.
@@GreenShortzDIYhaving a hard time finding that video. What is it called?
TMI…to complex, thanx for sharing
No link to tink tube? Makes it hard for you to get credit for the referal
Our chickens would always prefer to scratch their food off the ground than eat it from a bowl. Strange birds. Could you do away with the catch-tray altogether, if it's going in a chicken coop?
I wondered same thing or would larvae burrow down before chickens could get them
I think you’re both right. The bugs might hide, but perhaps within the range of a good scratch. Makes sense to let the chickens eat like they usually do. Hunt and peck. :-) Thank you for the feedback.
They'll get used to it.
They did. Just a case of being chicken. :-). Thank you for watching.
Maybe problem was color ... maybe chickens don't like blue ...
???
I think they were just intimidated by the new thing in the coop. :-)
