What You Never Knew About Bruce Lee's Childhood

  • We're talking about Bruce Lee and if he was in a gang growing up in Hong Kong before he came to America.
Now if you do a quick Google search, you will find something that says, "As a teenager, Bruce was taunted by British students for his Chinese background and later joined a street gang.
Despite being the son of a famous performer, it did not exempt young Bruce from bullying. To protect himself, he joined a gang called the Junction Street Eight Tigers."
So this makes it sound like Bruce was being bullied by British students because of his Chinese background, and he needed to join a gang for protection.
Now if you believe the "made for television" version of Bruce Lee's story where he needs to seek out protection from the evil gwailo, that's awesome for you, but it's pretty far from the truth.
So it turns out that Bruce Lee was bullied when he was young, but it wasn't by British kids due to his Chinese background. I mean, first of all, Bruce Lee was mixed, and being Eurasian was a bit of a status symbol in itself during that time in Hong Kong. Most of Bruce Lee's friends were also Chinese/European mixed kids.

I remember reading in a book that Bruce Lee joined a street gang called The junction Street eight tigers. They wasn't bothering anybody unless you bothered them. I also have read that Bruce Lee looked out for the little guy. He stood out for them, defended them if necessary. The last straw was when Bruce was by himself, he fought a leader of a triad gang. Bruce Lee defeated the triad gang leader because at that time Bruce learned Wing Chun Kung Fu. His parents decided it was time for him to leave Hong Kong because they was in fear of retaliation. So Bruce Lee left Hong Kong and came to America and as they say the rest is history.

I have a martial arts story , and a lesson of how we should never judge a book by its cover .
My instructor had a friend stop by the dojo ( this is early 1980s) unknown to the class this guy was a good friend of Dr. Laubers our instructor and owner of the studio.
Dude walked into the changing room , hair down to his ass , clearly dirt clothes, like he lived on the street. I'll never forget this part, dude had not one but TWO tooth brushes sticking up out of his back blue Jean pocket. Lol No joke how can you make that up? Lol
Anyway, of course I was frisky and thought he was a spy from another school 😂 and I was gona kick his tail . Yeah Right. Dude commnece to beat my butt back and forth up and down the dojo the enite night !
Hahaha oh man great times. Moral of the story I NEVER judged anyone Ever Again

From all my reading and watching, Bruce was actually a bully himself. He was a typical punk kid that liked to get into trouble. He roamed the streets with his friends picking on other kids that they didn't like. Of course, he grew out of this soon enough. But back then, he was a product of his environment, the streets of Hong Kong.

Bruce Lee was always into martial arts in some way. In one of his first films as a six year old boy, The Birth of Mankind (1946), he played a pickpocket. In Wealth is like a Dream (1948), he plays another lost kid who, in one scene, is seen fighting at least one man off. In his first starring role in The Kid AKA Kid Cheung (1950), he is seen doing a few moves, stops some bad guys at the end of the movie, and even did his little famous nose rub. In Blame It on Father (1953), he is sort of a bad kid ( his name is Big Eyed Dog) and is seen in one scene smoking and steals something from 3 boys and they get into a fight, where Bruce Lee won. After all these films, he started training with the king Ip Man, and did his classic martial arts films.

My teacher from Hong Kong , was also in a gang , you have to remember that five million people on the island part , every block had a gang, if you were caught alone on another gangs area , meant bad beating or death, so you learned how to run like hell, on the back of my teacher’s calf muscle were stage marks very deep marks, my teacher said everywhere you ran there were fences to block it from other areas, you had to be fast to make it over the fence, and at times they would almost get you , thank God only back of legs…we can’t imagine living like this, there is also missing from the human experience to help each other, instead it’s eat or be eaten…it really changed me seeing over forty knife slashing, knife stagings , this on the way home from school ….God bless and thank you for keeping things real, you know I’d normally look the other way when it came to BL , movies or other, my teacher was right there, with Bolo too…well this is getting long just know I thank you and you seemed to wake something inside. Really enjoying your videos. I like your humble approach. I just want to comment that most tongs were not involved in criminal activities as stated around 4:20. The tongs were created to help new immigrants with navigating the ins-and-outs of a new country. Some of the aid available were in job hunting, in finding a place to live, and offering a sense of community for the new arrivals. Most new comers would join a tong that have their same surname because the members were likely from the same province back in China. My dad and uncles were active in the Wongs' Association in LA's Chinatown. No criminal activities.

Thank you Prince for the time and effort you put into making these videos.Good job, well done, they are highly watchable, and impressively informative. Also the details about Bruce Lee’s interests in comics, and Chinese mythological heroes. This combined with his childhood habit of sticking up for his more vulnerable friends, ties in with his roles as the Chinese hero sticking up for the underdog,in movies such as The Big Boss,Fist Of Fury, and Way Of The Dragon.I might mention, unlike others with their endless speculation about Bruce Lee’s life and past. Why not contact the people who are still alive such as Dan Inosanto,Chuck Norris, and his widow Linda, also his family, brothers, and sisters are still alive, according to my knowledge, not to mention his former pupils, some of whom have set up their own dojos.I might take the opportunity to exhort Linda, and Shannon, his daughter, from this page, not to gag Bruce Lee’s family from speaking, and telling their story, because as siblings, and family they may know a side of him, and stories they could never know.,so even if money is involved please don’t b too possessive over his legacy,at least not as far as they are involved. As for you Prince keep up the good work, you seem to be heading in the right direction.

So blinded by who Lee was and who Cheung is...they overlook this fact. Their master was a street thug. Must have commited so many crimes. Likely against innocent people. This fact takes Lee down another notch in my book. It amazes me h ow his fans overlook this fact and still worship him blindly. To this day. Only seeing what they want to see...the hype.

which many had said he liked to go to other martial arts schools to spar and see how his art do with others styles which i find that ridiculous, styles work in themselves not trying.
being challenge was a different story, he liked to keep it secret so we don't know how many fights he had. bruce once said, if i take people challenges i'll be fighting everyday. i don't think he challenge others, for developing jeet kune do and being fast on films others challenging him. bruce once said he challenging others schools perhaps to him sparring means challenging ? with all these fighting and as an adult, is not written that he came home with bruises or black eyes (don't tell me he that lucky of a guy.) dan lee is a student of bruce lee and one day both sparred that dan got into a lucky punch hitting bruce in the face and bruce lost his temple and went crazy on dan lee. this story was told by dan inosanto a student of bruce. even as an adult he couldn't afford to be hurt. my point is, whether his life story is true or false, stories can be twisted. i don't take it to heart.

Excellent and refreshingly realistic depiction of Bruce Lee's early life without the romantic exaggerations that filmmakers and fanboys put on Bruce Lee's young life.
Your version meshes with biographies I have read by the likes of Linda Lee, and Alex Ben Block. That he was more of a troublemaking hoodlum looking for excitement than a gangster mixed up in crime. You can only be so thuggish spending countless hours to become the cha cha champion of Hong Kong!
Despite what many "based on" movies portray, the fact is that Bruce Lee came from a relatively privileged family. Lee also had a career starring in Hong Kong movies and dramas since from the time he was about 6 years old to shortly before for the U.S. so he had other responsibilities in his life to help give him some balance in life and keep him out of bigger trouble.
I think I watched the first two episodes of the Netflix drama on his life and concluded it was yet another gross exaggeration of his life so I stopped watching it.
I know embellishing his life sells but I'm more interested and find it more fascinating that a rather ordinary guy who had limitations - like near sightedness, small stature, poor grades - could pull himself together and be the biggest icon in martial arts. Isn't that more interesting? It is to me.

I always believed Bruce Lee designed JKD to be a mixture of martial arts , since he had constant conflict with racist , I think he looked for boxers who practiced 52Blocks ( since it was more effective in street fights ) there's video of All and Led meeting ; something tells me Lee show ground and pound to Ali , Ali in turn showed 52 moved to Lee. Been studying and practicing both for a while and the similarities are many. This video adds to my beliefs , dope attention to detail . Thxs

It is in the realm of possibility , did he not go to jail & did not also go to Africa . As nice as a person as he was he was still a Black Man living in a racist country .
